Notable for three reasons:
- USC is seemingly going to get hammered by NCAA sanctions, and they bring in a guy who's no stranger to them;
- The guy seemingly didn't even let Tennessee know he was going bye-bye; and
- http://twitter.com/Swiperboy. He's tweeting (ugh that word) of the ugliness going on down there - like riots and stuff.

"The USC football program will receive a two-year postseason ban, a reduction in scholarships and a forfeiture of wins from at least the 2004 season when the NCAA releases its sanctions on Thursday, a source told ESPN's Shelley Smith."
Take away the wins, fine. But punishing the people who had committed no wrongdoing is utterly retarded. The NCAA deserves its reputation as the butt of all jokes.

the thinking is that if the program is punished by having people be wary of going there, they'll have to clean up their act. there's really no other way to punish them, b/c those losses are meaningless now anyhow

Lane Kiffin is hardly an innocent bystander in this whole thing.

They should fine the school heavily and make the AD and possibly the President of the school accountable. Taking away scholarships from athletes makes NO sense.

It does, b/c what you mentioned doesn't really punish them. If athletes won't want to go there, that's the only real punishment, IMO. They don't care about fines and suspensions to the people in the front office, who can still do their job behind the scenes

Eh...I guess this will upset Nick Lachey and fans of minor league football, but USC should have been given restrictions a long time ago to level the playing field.
With the weather and girls alone, I think most top athletes would pay the full tuition to go there and play, anyway.

Nah, if coaches, ADs and Presidents got fired during recruiting scandals that would force them to clean up the mess much more.

But you can't force a team to fire someone, you can only punish them. And again, those guys can still do shit anyway, just have a figurehead in place. That really doesn't do anything

Totally disagree. Plus you have kids with scholarships currently on the team who've done nothing wrong, and now they either have to transfer or play in obscurity for the rest of their career.

There really isn't a disagreement on being able to force colleges to fire someone, though.
They're still on TV, too, right? People will still see the games.
It's the only way to hurt a college program, taking away their ability to get players. Everything else is window dressing since the people "punished" can still do everything anyway

Meanwhile coaches like Calipari go from school to school, cheat and win whereever they go, leave the school with sanctions while they prosper at the next stop before getting caught again. Totally unfair to the players.

BTW, there really isn't any such thing as obscurity anymore for football. If a player is good, even on a crappy DII school, pro teams will know

Yeah, it sucks, but it's like that at every level of money-making organizations

In money-making organizations, if your underlings cost you a lot of money (i.e. heavy fines for recruiting scandals) they get fired. So you can't force them, no, but with public pressure and penalties, they will be in the end. And if you want to turn the program around and be a respectable organization again you wouldn't hire a figurehead and have the same guy running stuff behind the curtains. That just doesn't happen in reality.

Not if that person brought in a ton of money, like in the case with USC. that's the bottom line, the fines are things that are easily paid for.
most of these big colleges don't care about being respectable, they do these things every day, and like f-d said, this should have happened a while ago with USC. USC knew it was going to happen, the players knew it was going to happen, Pete Carroll knew it was going to happen months ago.
But yeah, in real life, as long as a program is brining in money, the team will keep the people responsible anyway they can

Which is why the fines and suspensions need to be substantial enough so that they pay in the end.
I'm sure Tony Heyward was responsible for bringing in a lot of money for BP too.

fines are never as much as they bring in, come on, that just never happens. they need to make teams that are doing afraid that they won't be able to get the players they want. Just getting rid of a pres doesn't do anything to alleviate that at all

If the NCAA just fines a program like USC, they just raise tuition on all of the non-scholaaship students. Fines don't do shit to big time colleges.

USC had one of the best recruiting classes commit to them the past season, I'm wondering how this will affect that.

One day after Tressel leaves to coach the Browns.
So in other words, probably never.
