“sterilize them all, end of breed, end of problem”

Thousands of these animals are getting exterminated ever day in animal shelters so eventually you will get your wish…

Nothing like owning a dog who can “lock jaw” down on your throat and won’t let go….

Maybe the U.S. military can use them in Afghanistan, Iraq, or soon to be Iran.

i'd like to retract my "lock jaw" comment. i've done some googling and it seems like it's a myth. interesting link from the UK kennel club regarding the barring of certain pit bull breeds in the UK.

We should follow their lead.

Plus, the dogs are ugly. I think we can all agree on that

wrong.

id only say red-nosed or maybe the brindleds are even eligible for that term.

mine was a magnificent specimen- beautiful markings- fawn with white chest, feet. dark muzzle and that 'eyeliner' look of black 'round the eyes.

gorgeous dog. rippling muscles that would make spuds blush when penning a write up of her running through a field at VF park.

OK, this is getting funnier. Two pitbulls were owned by a 15 year old, who found them as strays and kept them. They were being walked by a 10 year old. Shocking he could not contain the wild, vicious breed.

So "Brownie" was taken, where he will "...be tested for rabies and his temperament watched for aggressive behavior, in part, to determine if the dog can be returned to the owner, said Conn."

Um, isn't it already established here that he should NOT be returned to 'the owner'??? If it's known by the 9 yr old who walks the dog, that if you run he will bite you- I think that's all you need to know right there.

This is a cut and paste job from the Johnstown newspaper. Any guess to the breed of the victim?

Renter showed total lack of respect

I was appalled by the Feb. 11 story concerning the police shooting a dog during the arrest of someone who allegedly: Does not pay his bills, owes back rent and utility bills, threatens his landlady, engages in disorderly conduct and resists arrest.

When questioned regarding overdue bills, the renter’s response was to allegedly threaten his landlady, necessitating police assistance. If he cannot pay his bills, why does he have dogs? That he kept not one but four dogs in an apartment speaks volumes regarding his lack of respect for someone else’s property.

One wonders about the condition of an apartment with four animals running loose inside. Apartments are not owned by tenants; apartments are the property of someone else. I’ve witnessed the disrespect that tenants with animals treat rental property in Westmont. The odors, dirt and poor conditions are unbelievable. It seems as if every renter brings animals into the situation.

Johnstown police officers were justified in their actions. Should any animal rights organization become involved, as alluded to, it should be to determine whether or not the remaining animals should be removed for their well-being.

Also troubling was reading an unrelated story that a parent permitted a child to remain exposed to a situation requiring police intervention and then complained about what happened.

Common sense dictates children should be removed from potentially explosive situations.

It cant be that easy NEAG.

So, statistically speaking, Slappy, the offending breeds that likely were to be shot by a cop for biting could just as easily have been:

Any mixed breed- they usually win out in every state, every year

Cocker Spaniels

Border Collies

Any terrier type

as it was likely to be a Pit, Rottie, Dobie or AM Bulldog....

I love American Bulldogs. Love them.

They are extremely dog aggressive on average, however, which is why I don't currently own one.

They're great dogs FD, and very very smart on average.

I like what they bring to the table as far as a good home protector without the size being too too big.

(normally- I have seen some that were intentionally bred to be whoppers)

I had one that was about 100 lbs. (maybe 95). So, so, so dog aggressive, though. Fine in every other way, but couldn't stand the site of any other dog.

I think goin fwd 100lbs will be my threshold for a family pet.

Side note: To get a quality dog which is historically of German descent, im finding one must go to Germany (online of course) to obtain a dog that actually meets the breed's original standards.

The American 'versions' of the original G.Shepherds, Dobermans and Boxers speciffically have all been tainted in some way or another.

The G.Shepherds here all come from bloodlines that have just horrible hips anymore- even those you buy that have certified hips STILL have issues. Too many litters, too little true good stock from which to selectively breed. Not to mention the sizes are less by a good third.

Thats the Doberman's main issue- that and temperment.
The bad rep that followed the Dobie around thru the 80s cost the breed a lot over the subsequent years. More often than not now, you have litters sired by dogs that dont meet the breed standard, and not that anyone wants a snarling frothing at the mouth beast- but part of what makes dogs so interesting is how they were bred for specific traits.
A Dobe is supposed to be fiercly loyal, and fierce if the situation warrants , without requiring specialized training like Schutzland for example.

Now they're smaller, and they're far more docile and they have actually (intentionally so that they can sell em of course) seen this essential trait bred right out of them. If you want something close to the original Doberman it comes from a kennel that also trains their breeding pairs in Schutzland and thats too 'over the top' for me. Not lookin for that. And theyre STILL smallish.

The boxer? Forget it.
They're the laughin stock of all German Breeds. Once a very good guard dog breed, w. imposing size (yet not on par w/ the Dobe and Shepherds of course)and good trainabilty they've been so over produced now that you have just as good a shot getting quite literally a very dumb one that cannot learn the most simple of commands, they're almost the size of medium sized Pit. I know 6 owned by members of my family- none top out at more than 60lbs. Even the males. And 3 of those are so effin stupid, and show signs of the classic over breeding within that breed- the overly long tounge that just hangs outta the mouth 90% of the time. I think far more restrictions should be placed on the breeding of purebred dogs- these backyard breeders are killing the true beauty that is breed standards anymore.

As the Akita is getting up in years I am starting the legwork in acquiring her eventual replacement, and Id love it to be a Dobe. I am not above dropping the estimated 900.00 to have 1 selected ahead of time from a litter who's parent's health, specs and history can be guaranteed, shipped to my door if it means Im getting a real Dobie.
