MOVE - 25 years later

Hard to believe it’s been 25 years. I still remember watching those buildings burn as I sat at the dinner table with my family. The whole thing was really incomprehensible as a nine-year old, but 25 years later, I’m not sure it makes much more sense. Philly.com has a big feature on it, complete with lots of video and profiles of the people involved. It’s especially absurd that some of the major figures still refuse to accept any responsibility or even discuss the incident. Surprisingly, Wilson Goode comes across as one of the better individuals involved, which shows you what pieces of shit the others must be. linc

Left a big impression on me as a kid. Sad that innocent kids and neighbors were involved. No pity for the actual offenders with their disregard for their neighbors or the law, their septic yards and vermin everywhere. Annnnnnnd scene~!

The thing I never grasped at the time is how the residents of the other 59 houses on that block were totally screwed. It was bad enough that they had to live for years with MOVE desecrating their block, but to then lose their homes and possessions as a result of a botched city government action was absurd. Then they were screwed again in a major rebuilding scam and eventually, Street just paid a bunch of them to move away, essentially permanently decimating the neighborhood. The retrospective video interview with the cop who was on the scene is really interesting. I can't fathom the kind of pressure those guys were under at the time. They were being sent into an urban war zone with very limited planning and little attention to detail.
