Who here plays, and what position do you play? Is your league competitive, or a kegger league?

Was thinking of getting back into it- and I know there has to be someone here who plays

I played in a beer league the summer after I graduated from high school and it was really pretty fun, but I got bored of it quickly and swore I'd never be as big a loser as all my "teammates" by playing in my 30's or 40's.

I play in a co-ed beer league. It was originally my dad's work team but I have transformed it into a team of ringers with all my friends who are athletic. We play once a week and it fun to get a bunch of people together and have a few drinks while playing softball.

I agree Red- it's a good way of rolling around in the grass during summertime

So someone who wants to hangout with a few friends, have a few beers, and crank a few homers is a loser? That is why BMA is loved here.

Fred- have you ever played on a team for fun?

I'm with Redburb and Fred.

I play(ed) first base, but my specialty was hitting liners and gappers out to right (I'm a righty). Opposing teams always, ALWAYS, put their weakest fielder in right and you can pick up easy extra base hits by putting it in right. If the fielder is overweight (likely), you can even leg out a homer with a good gap shot.

To each his own, but I think sports are for kids and softball is for girls.

Don't get me wrong...I enjoy sports, love competition, etc. I just wouldn't feel comfortable participating.

Buddy, are you really tall?

That's the only way I could see a right hander at first base in a softball league

I coach my step-daughter's fast-pitch softball team, and occasionally dabble in a slow-pitch league (I'm the guy they call when one or more of the regulars can't make it.)

I have a good time with it when I play, but this league plays 2-3 games a week, which is WAY too much for my schedule. In the past couple years I've noticed an influx of guys who treat each game like it's game 7 of the World Series, which also detracts from my enjoyment.

Bottom line, if it weren't for the keg parties afterwards, I'm not sure I'd play. But I never even played Little League beyond age 11-12, so...

I love those guys. At my last job, we played our largest competitor in a softball game. One of the fucks on my team wore stirrup socks and eye black. I was embarrassed to be his co-worker. I had a lot of friends on the other team, they were asking the next day who the hell that dude was.

I think that's the thing with softball, it's often a bunch of guys that played baseball and can't let go of their past

Neag:

Yes (relatively), 6'4''.

But more importantly, I'm a hoover with the glove and in a softball league you get some really bad throws across the diamond.

Yeah, see, your co-worker would fit right into this league. We actually had a guy try an appeal play a couple weeks ago, saying the runner left third base too early on a sacrifice fly. The umpire looked at him like he was crazy.

I started playing at 20 since I played baseball until high school and stopped due to grades and other things. We got a bunch of guys from the neighborhood and we were god awful our first year. I don’t even think we won 3 games. The second year we weeded out guys that didn’t really cared and just wanted to drink and got better but still got our asses handed to us pretty much every game. Finally we said f it either we quit or start playing serious since nobody likes to get embarrassed week after week. Now that we are in our early 30’s people have started to fall by the wayside due to kids, work and just not having the desire to play anymore. We still have 7 guys we started with 13 years ago and have picked up other guys during the years some have stuck and some have not. We play in two summer leagues and one fall league. We have a rule no eye black, no baseball pants no stupid chatter this isn't the major leagues. Some guys we play against wear that stuff and those are the guys who usually suck and will get a ball to the back of the head from the outfield trying to stretch a double into a triple when they are winning by 10 runs.

Yeah. I never played in a "competitive league"- when I was bartending we had a local thing with some of the bars out in Pittsburgh, made up our t-shirts and all, strictly for fun.

Played fastpitch competitively until I was 26. Won a Men’s Class “A” National Championship along the way. Played with and against a few of the best players in the world during that time period. After my skills began to diminish I started coaching my daughter which led to various coaching opportunities across the United States. I’ve had the good fortune to either play or coach in 15 states. Several of my girls are currently playing Division I, II and III softball. Most recently I have been coaching a high school team in my area for the past several years. The sport has provided me with many memories and a lot of relationships.
