Orlando Sanford International Airport will be opting out of TSA screening and hiring a private security firm.

Good for them. If they think it'll offer them better security and they can make it work, go for it.

these social libertarian issues are exactly the type of matters where a ron paul type politician is useful. it's when he wants to impose his ideology on broader, infinitely more complicated matters like the economy is when he gets into trouble.
lets hope the reasonable, adult version of bma we got a glimpse of in the bleeds this week contributes to this thread, and not his awful, trolling alter-ego.

Here's the question I would have:
The solution to the need for security at US airports is not a government bureaucracy. The solution is to allow the private sector, preferably the airlines themselves, to provide for the security of their property. As a recent article in Forbes magazine eloquently stated, “The airlines have enormous sums of money riding on passenger safety, and the notion that a government bureaucracy has better incentives to provide safe travels than airlines with billions of dollars worth of capital and goodwill on the line strains credibility.” In the meantime, I hope we can pass this legislation and protect Americans from harm and humiliation when they choose to travel.
Private security handled everything at the airports before the TSA and, as well know, they weren't doing a very good job.
I'm not defending the TSA, but why would it be different this time?

If a politician could really frame this issue in the public's mind in terms of "it absolutely is the airline's sole responsibility for your safety and security," you could potentially destroy some of these airlines.
If safety and security becomes the airline's sole responsibility and a terrorist gets a weapon on board a USAir flight, would anyone fly USAir again? I wouldn't.
Of course, this just provides an opportunity for airlines to jack up their prices again. If they claim they're doing it to prevent terrorism, people will have a hard time justifying complaints about the price hike, even though most of the money will go to the airline's pockets.
In the end, though, you'll have some airlines with even more invasive, restrictive security procedures, and you'll have some that are more lax. Guess which ones the terrorists will choose to fly? And if one airline employs racial profiling, I could totally see no Muslims or Arabic looking people even buying tickets for that airline. Basically, you're going to inadvertently create one airline that will become Terrorist Central because of a more freedom loving attitude.
My money says it will be Southwest.

i'm guilty of not reading paul's proposal. of course, completely privatizing airline security is retarded on a level that's hard to express.
well, i tried to throw paul a bone. he is just nuts.

On profiling: How about we train German Shepherds to sniff out foreskin?
Anyone the canines detect goes in the extra pat down line, the rest of us non-terrorists zip right through.

That won't work because you'll have the entire state of California waiting in the terrorist line.
The left-wing nuts out there are pushing to make circumcision illegal. Who started this trend? A bunch of women who believe circumcision denies men of feeling in their penis.
Anyone here feel as though your circumcised cock lacks feeling?
Didn't think so.

My wife bantered the idea of not having our son cirumcised. I let her think she had some control over the decision but at the end of the day my stance was simply "SHUT THE FUCK UP WE ARE NOT HAVING A LOCKER ROOM FREAK".

Love those poll results, 81% voted 'Yes, anything is better than TSA.' Love the capitalistic approach to safety.
Almost has a worse appoval rating than Bush did.
