Tough to get even remotely excited about this team.

I guess maybe Holiday... He looks like a player.

They got no shot of winning anything so who gives a flying fk.

Rather watch a mens college game at the Palestra.

Or see Elena Delle Donne drop 30 at the U of D.

She's awesome and easy on the eyes, too. Rare for your average 6'4" college hoops player. Girl I work with was just talking about working the family (Dad is LOADED) Christmas party this morning.

You're certainly right they have no chance this year, but they can still be entertaining and competitive. I think this is a likeable team, for the most part.

You have to hope that due to youth, great coaching and a "team" mentality they can play above their talent level and draw a superstar looking to latch on to a promising team. Or overpay for one via trade. It appears they won't be able to get one in the draft.

Delle Donne was at a clinic my stepdaughter attended this past summer or fall... I'd be surprised if she's any less than 6-foot-6.

We got tickets to see Delaware play Drexel in February. Should be interesting... competition-wise, it's probably like what would happen if Derrick Rose actually WAS a senior at Memphis right now. Has anyone ever left college early to declare for the WNBA draft?

just reading up on her a bit, she's a flake. dropped out of competitive basketball twice already due to personal issues.

Don't take this as a "how dare you!"-type rebuke, but I think those personal issues were related to a severely disabled sister at home. At least that's the public reason given for her departure from Connecticut.

ENY is correct - she is the opposite of a flake. She left UConn to be closer to her sister. Putting family ahead of self does not a flake make.

Sister issues not withstanding, I heard stuff similar to what Flesh said when I worked in CRS @ Wilmy Trust....several co-workers there were actual friends of the family and said that she preferred to be the big fish in a little pond, than stay at UCONN where she was just another player on a team full of ones all as good or better than she.

They said the family encouraged her to return home then, rather than quit hoops altogether which is what she was claiming she would do- she wasnt happy on the UCONN team, or with her status/role there.

The people explaining this actually weren't painting it in a bad light either- they kinda sided w/ her saying that its easy to see why/understand where she's coming from.

I never got it.

yeah, her actions are the textbook definition of a flake, despite the protests of a compulsive apologist like dino.

whether it's blacks or basketball players, if there is an excuse to be conjured, dino's all over it.

She did not quit playing in High School, I think she stopped playing competitive OUTSIDE high school (AAU stuff, etc) for a while in the leadup to her Senior year.

The UConn thing was definitely related to homesickness and her close relationship to her sister, she is happy as can be now.

Actually, this kind of does make sense in a career-arc type of way.

I know next to nothing about the WNBA, except for that they have maximum player salaries which top out around $100K. Given what GGB said about her family's financial situation, and the fact that basketball does not appear to be the lone priority in her life... I can understand why she might prefer the idea of being the hometown girl at the University of Delaware who averages 35 points over a season, rather than another nameless cog in the UConn machine.

It won't cost her any money down the road, and she might become more marketable once her professional career does begin. Apparently Candace Parker made close to $3 million in endorsements her first year in the WNBA... now here's a girl (Delle Donne) who got national attention without even playing one minute in college... now she's likely to break all sorts of scoring records and garner more attention. I mean, she's making women's basketball at the University of Delaware somewhat relevant. And her name itself is somewhat memorable.

UConn had that 91-game winning streak over the past three years, but the only people I can name from that program are Rebecca Lobo and Auriemma.
