It seems like to good of a thing, ya know?
Something will fall out (be it injuries or no extension) that will make us come back to earth.
Seriously.

They brought this up on sports radio in LA when talking about why Bynum to Philly is good because Bynum wants to get his big payday. That means there's ZERO chance he walks in Free Agency if he doesn't sign an extension because his best contract comes from the team with his rights. Worse case, he plays out next season and is worked into a sign and trade with a team in order to for him to get the contract he wants, meaning Philly will at least get something out of the deal if things fall apart.
They were also saying he's dumb if he signs an extension now, because he can't sign for more than 5 years at this point; if he extends after the season he gets paid for this year and extended for 5 more at big money. If he signs now, he's locked in Philly which takes away any chance of him moving anytime soon so he may not like that.
On Howard going to LA, he's out of the conference and most of LA's talent is on the wrong side of 30 so how long they can play at a high level and remain healthy is in question.

that's not really the question, it's the reason they're doing this now. THey now they have a couple years left out of their stars and are trying to maximize that window

Love this trade for a few reasons:
1) Finally get a big man: With Howard out of the conference this gives us the best center in the East by far. Yes he is hurt a bunch and yes he is immature. But the kid can flat out play. Maybe the hopes of a huge payday will be a motivating factor but you never know. Playing close to home could also help out. His best chance of getting paid is staying here and getting 5 years anywhere else he will get 3 or 4. With a bad year and dogging it people might not be willing to give him the money he wants.
2) Iggy is gone: Great defensive player and that cannot be questioned, but he is limited on the offensive end. He has improved his jump shot but still inconsistent. I really like that he wants the ball at the end of games but I just wish he could finish them. Denver next year will be fun to watch with him, Lawson, Fareed and Magee. Going to be a track meet.
3) Finally gives us a chance to see what Turner can do playing the 2 or 3 with consistent minuets. He was the number two pick in the draft and was a damn good college player. Like the starting team of: Jrue, Richardson, Turner, Thad and The Big Puzzle. Bench: Nick Young, Wright, Hawes, Allen and Brown. Solid 8 or 9 right there.
I see Miami being the only team head and shoulders above the Sixers. Boston a year older and w/o Ray Allen. Chicago showed what they were w/o Rose in the playoffs now take him away until after the New Year. Indy and Brooklyn are right on par with us. Could finish 2nd or 3rd or could finish 6th.

From Collins:
"How it came together: "We had three teams that we locked in to doing it. But Orlando was looking for a home for Dre. At the last minute, Denver came into the picture to be the fourth team. For them to move Dre and get Aflalo and Harrington was the thing that really pushed it over the top and got them to do the deal.""
So, let me get this straight, Orlando preferred Affalo and Harrington to Iggy. OUch.

bc if the main piece is going to be one guy (like iggy or bynum), it has to be someone that won't bolt next year. so it doesn't really make sense for them.
People here don't realize that teams love iggy. kobe and howard are among some of the players that wanted to play him

KB,
You're missing the point. Of course superstars want to play along side him. He's the next best tier of player. But he himself is not a superstar that you build around.

Assuming Bynum would resign with Orlando, that's just stupid. They managed to get worse in the short run and less flexibility in the long run.
Kb, do you think Bynum is a franchise cornerstone you can build around? I mean that sincerely.

not sure you're being obtuse or not, but that is the point: they know those guys aren't resigning there, so they didn't want them as the main piece.

Probably am being obtuse, but unintentionally.
Given that no one was resigning with the Magic as-is, they would have gained more flexibility from taking Bynum and flipping him in six months. Even if they rode out his contract, they would be in a better position one year from now than where they'll be. I don't get it.
You didn't answer my question about Bynum being a franchise cornerstone. I think he is, but I'm on the west coast and biased. He's not Lebron, Howard or the other super-top tier of talent, but he's just below and is young enough to ascend. I think this is a tremendous move by the Sixers.

of course i think he is.
the contracts orlando took back aren't bad, they can get rid of them. they don't need to clear space for next year anyway, they're starting to rebuild (which is why they wanted picks) and won't be needing to clear space for 2013 anyway

I also love that this make the sixers, assuming they resign Bynum, much more attractive to next years's free agents. They can afford two superstars starting next summer. One can dream...

yep, and depending on which superstar(s) they want, they can shed more salary and get another solid 2nd fiddle type guy. pretty dramatic change of events in the one year the ownership group over. if this doesn't make it obvious snider didn't give a shit about the team i don't know what will

That would probably requiring not resigning Jrue, which I'd be okay with if, say, CP is the free agent they manage to attract.
In fact, that should probably be their plan: sign a top PG and let Jrue walk (or be part of the sign-and-trade). Jrue wants more money than he's worth. You might as well spend a little more and get a legit guard. They'd then have enough left over to pick up another mini-star. The chance to play with Paul and Bynum or Ellis and Bynum should be a nice lure.

Good, he's a legitimate NBA coach who's weel respected by the players in the league. RE: respect he got at the Olympics from the players. That will help when going after players and coaching them. If they don't respect the coach in the NBA the inmates quickly start running the asylum
