DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.
Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.
"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.
Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.

Hard to say this, but it could have been much much worse. DJ williams (stud LB) and Javon Walker where also in the limo. PFT claims he died in walkers lap. Just terrible.

Now they are saying he was leaving a NYE/Birthday party thrown by Kenyon Martin. It may be nothing, but Martin was pretty short on the whole subject and said he left before midnight. Probably nothing, but found it a little odd he'd leave his own party before the ball dropped and made me wonder if some entourages might have been exchangign words between Broncos players and Nuggets players.
The issue did reportedly stem in some way from a verbal confrontation in the club, but there aren't many details.
This story could get a lot weirder...
