Anyone else hear a rumor that Koy Detmer might be back at the Eagles specifically to hold for Akers?

Yes.
Yes I did.
And then Spuds was on the radio this am, and acting, well, rather 'koy' about the signing.
They resigned Koy, I'd bet on it. Something will come out officially about it soon 1 would think.

Not that they need that roster spot for someone important.

So let I get this straight -
Koy's coming back, specifically for holding Akers' kicks (if not for a SB ring opportunity), because Akers might not have liked how Dirk was holding the ball (speculating)? What is this, daycare?

Lets face it we all have not had the confidence in Akers like in years past. The mere fact that Akers missed a FG under 30 yards for the first time in like ohhhh 6 years was a wake up call for FB. Also any else notice that Akers only had 23 FGA this year. His lowest amount of attempts since being in Eagle green. Call it babyish, but if its what they need to heal Davids psyche I am all for it.

You need every advantage for the playoffs - I get that. And if it brings Akers out of the funk he's in, then whatever.
Does anyone believe in what Mike Miss said about him?
Either way, don't insult my intelligence of bringing in Koy as anything other than a "FG specialist" or something to that nature, because the QBs in the lineup now are all better than him. Yes, even overrated AJ.

Figured Perry to be the odd-man out - I mean, was he even used at all since they signed him?
Just has "Why Even Bother?" all over it. Unless they wanted to throw Perry a bone.

SO this means Jason Short got cut essentially for Koy Detmer.
K.
But like I said, if it means Akers is booming 55+ yarders now, then whatever.

the way I look at it is that kickers are a strange, tempermental bunch. just look at vandershit, the guy goes from being one of the most consistent to unemployed in about 2 seasons. so if this allows Akers to focus on the ball and nothing else I'm all for it.

That whole blow-up that Miss had with Akers on WIP (for entertainment purposes only) that made him hang up - where he basically ripped on Akers for being overdramatic (from ripping his hammy last year and acting as if wild cows were gnawing on his leg), as well as other things (basically questioned his football manhood).

Quarterback Koy Detmer Signs With Eagles
By ROB MAADDI, AP Sports Writer
PHILADELPHIA - Koy Detmer returned to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday to provide insurance at quarterback going into the playoffs.
Detmer will be the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Jeff Garcia and backup A.J. Feeley. After Donovan McNabb went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 11, the Eagles added Omar Jacobs to the practice squad.
To make room for Detmer on the roster, cornerback Bruce Perry was released.
The 33-year-old Detmer spent nine seasons with Philadelphia after being selected in the seventh round of the 1997 NFL draft. He was cut in training camp and was out of football this regular season.
Detmer has started eight games in his career while serving mostly as a backup to McNabb and a holder for kicker David Akers. He's completed 52 percent of his passes (184-for-354) for 1,944 yards, 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Detmer's most memorable performance came in a Monday night game against San Francisco in 2002. One week after McNabb broke his ankle, Detmer threw for 227 yards and two TDs and ran for another before leaving with a dislocated elbow in the third quarter of a 38-17 win over the 49ers.
Despite losing McNabb, the Eagles went 5-1 behind Garcia and captured their fifth NFC East title in six years. Philadelphia (10-6) hosts the New York Giants (8-8) on Sunday.

doesn't it mean if Koy comes into hold, that he is the #2 QB? I thought there was a strange rule about a third string QB coming into a game, making the #2 QB ineligible. Anyone else remember somthing like this?

As I understand the rule, you can have three QBs as long as you don't declare one of them to be the "emergency" QB.

You're always allowed 3 QB's, but if the 3rd string comes in, then 1 and 2 are done for the game.
Of course, they could go around this by listing Koy as a punter

Pretty much. I think they could get around that by putting Feeley on the actice roster, but they would have to sit a position player to do so.
Otherwise, they basically get a roster exemption for the "emergency QB". If he enters the game the other 2 cannot return, though.
I think that's how it works.
Akers is being a crybaby. If this fixes it...fine. It's a solid roster move for the playoffs. Fact is, he isn't good enough at this point in his career to get paid almost $2 million per PLUS take up 2 roster spots with his stablemate/useless QB holder.

This is insane. How will this fix Akers problem? Dirk has made some spectacular "saves" in getting the ball down.
The problem is not the holder - the problem is in Akers missing wide left or wide right.
They better have plans on bringing in other kickers this offseason. If for nothing else, competition.

I have no problem with this. The problem with Sunday's miss WAS the holder.

I can't believe nobody's considering Dirk Johnson's self-esteem in all this. Next thing you know he'll be working at The Cave or something.

The problem with Sunday's miss WAS the holder.
Out of the entire season. That doesn't sit well with me.
If Koy restores his confidence, OK. But this is a move that shouldn't have needed to have been made. Akers should've manned up and adjusted - he's getting paid good money to go out and kick, and Neckbeard wasn't part of the deal (though with kickers, it could've been, so who knows?)

The way Garcia's running around out there and bleeding all over the place, I was surprised that they hadn't added a third QB yet.

Exactly. I think Akers is using the holder as an excuse now when there seems to be a longer trend of him just starting to stink.
I went back and looked at the stats among full-time kickers and accuracy over the past few years and there is a trend here.
In 2001, he was the 6th most accurate kicker in football.
In 2002, he was 4th in the league.
In 2003 he fell to 12th.
In 2004, he slipped to 14th.
2005 found him all the way down at 30th in the NFL, though part of that was torn hammy.
Now, in 2006, he's 20th in the NFL...and they aren't even letting him attempt 50+ yard field goals anymore.
Now, the big drop in accuracy came between 2002 and 2003. Anyone want to gues what changed there?
He went from kicking on turf to grass at home. I have no idea if that's what was to blame, but it's a remarkable dropoff and it does happen to coincide with their move to a new stadium/surface.
He went from accuracy of 88%, 84% and 88% in his 3 seasons at the vet to an 80% kicker after the move with his last 2 seasons in the 70's.
