Sorry, Andy

I owe Cap'n Andy an apology. I've ridden his fat hide over problems that haven't been solved over the last 7+ years. But in the last few weeks they seem to have turned a corner.

- Timeouts. Has anyone noticed that the Eagles wasted a TO just before the 2 minute warning? Did anyone notice it was their 1st? They've obviously found a way to streamline the way the play gets into the QB.

- Playcalling. Since Morningwood took over, we've seen a dramatic increase in run/pass balance.

- Leaving points on the field. Other than taking FGs instead of TDs, they have gotten more out of their possesions near the end of the half.

- Chewing up the clock. How many times did we sweat out the last few minutes of the game because th Birds couldn't get that 1 or 2 1st downs to kill the clock?

It takes a big man to admit what he's doing isn't working and let someone else try. To rethink his philosophy and change how things are done. I didn't think AR had it in him.

I was wrong.

I'd say that you were right before, but now he's changed things, you are no longer right.

On a related note, the TV cameras picked him up on the sidelines during a timeout giving someone some nasty looks, with a bit of a snarl. Who was that directed at? Runyan? (I seem to recall it was right or shortly after the offsetting PF call)

I can't bring myself to go down this road yet.

Obviously, he's tturned in a stellar job down the stretch here, but the real test will be how he aplies the lessons learned to next year.

If the 2007 season starts with a 70/30 pass/run ration, they draft more midgets, they don't add a power runner, and Reid decides to take playcalling duties back, this was all just a big cock-tease.

Agreed. But even this little step shows he can change. He has seen it work, now let's see if he can stick with it.

For the first time in a long time (since the Hegamin sled incident), I have a good feeling about Cap'n Andy.

No doubt...he turned it around this year and I don't know how he did it. Very, very impressive.

I need to see him with his pet back under center, though. He seems to lose his mind on offense when he has a healthy mcNabb.

If you're talking about the time out that I am, it was when Garcia wasted the TO with 2:02 to go in the 2nd. Pretty sure it was directed at Garcia when he came to the side lines.

I think one of the Recievers was lined up wrong. Garcia had to burn the TO because they didn't have time to get set before the playclock would expire.

If you look at the tape, Reid seems to be looking past Garcia to someone on the field.

It HAD to be Garcia he was glaring out. Burning the timeout was a just a mistake given the fact that the 2 minute warning was only 2 ticks away.

It was Garcia that Reid was glaring at. That was a mistake not even a rookie would make.

If you watch the tape, Garcia comes up, they chat, and then Reid starts to glare. The look seems to be aimed back at the field, not at Garcia standing right in front of him.

Not like any of this matters. They actually had 3 TOs at the time. That's what made me happy.

Really - even Reid's smart enough to know you can't do that with Garcia.

You can bet he'll see some more of the same stuff the Giants threw at him in NO.

It wouldn't make sense for him to be more mad at the WR, though - if he lined up wrong, then the clock hits 2:00 and, oh well, the play doesn't get off. Taking a timeout with 2:02 left and enough time on the playclock to let it hit the TMW is more of a chewable offense.

At 2:03, Shoebel goes in motion leaving Runyon uncovered. As he passes Garcia, Garcia calls TO and trots over to Reid. They talk for a second and all seems OK. When Reid barks "Damnit", Garcia turns toward the field. It seems like he's looking to see who Reid is yelling at. Then all is calm again.

I would rather have an explanation of the 1st and 11, on the Giants possesion earlier in the game.

The 1st and 11 was after a holding penalty on the play.

Wouldn't that make it 1st & 20 or 2nd and 11?

They do the holding penalty from the spot of the foul. I think it was a long run but the hold happened close to the end of the run, and they took it from that point. It's happened a lot, actually, but I can't remember when they changed that rule.

But if they gave the Giants the 9 yards from the run, why did they get to repeat the down?

The run would've given them a first down (and more), so you take the penalty.

Looking at the PBP, the hold happened at the same place where Barber got tackled. So they took the penalty to force them back.

So if the Birds decline the penalty, it's 2nd & 1, not 1st & 1. Then why wasn't it 2nd & 11?

By taking the penalty, it automatically replays the down. They wouldn't have been able to take the penalty AND the down.

I would like to give Andy some props for one huge thing he has done right, even before this incredible run. He has drafted/picked up some good OL every year. Even when the line seemed to be a strength, he has still adressed it and it has definitely paid off big time. (now if only he could do that for the DL)

Chewing up the clock. How many times did we sweat out the last few minutes of the game because th Birds couldn't get that 1 or 2 1st downs to kill the clock?

That was actually my prime concern. five minutes left and a tie game...I wasn't worried about them scoring or leaving it tied. I was scared like crazy that they would be giving the ball back, one way or another, with plenty of time for the Giants to score.

When was the last time the Eagles ran five minutes or more off a clock at the end of a close game?

Oh, and I have to back fagelpoke on the "Reid glaring" thing. It was really vivid to me while watching that Reid was NOT glaring at Garcia, but at someone on the field instead. He might have been yelling at Garcia, but his deathray eyes were aimed right at the camera on the other sideline, not on the QB.

Check the gametime thread and you'll see that this confused the heck out of me, too.

I'm still lost on how it became 1st and 11 on a holding penalty. Care to sum that up again in one post?
