Prediction thread - NFC Divisional Playoff

The Eagles train is riding on the city of New Orleans for a matchup with the suprising Saints.

Saints have had 3 weeks to prepare for this one, and I think that will be the difference. ALl things considered, who would have thought we'd be discussing a second round playoff game when Philly left Indianapolis at 5-6?

Who dat sayin' dey gonna beat dem Saints?

I have a strange feeling that this is gonna be a slugfest instead of a high scoring game of finesse. One team with a layoff and their first home playoff game in almost a decade. Another team on a short week going againest a coach who historically has given them fits. The game starts out fast in first quarter and then turns into a fight in a phone booth. I think Birds weather the early emotion and high tempo then the game settles down and it turns into a field goal fest.

As an aside, whoever wins this game is going to the Super Bowl. Seattle's not strong enough, and Chicago's coaching staff will find a way to screw up their HFA if they make it past Seattle this weekend (which I don't think they will).

I have a bad feeling about this game. Only road divisional round game the Eagles have EVER won that I can remember was the Bears game a few years ago. Then again, New Orleans has never won a divisional round game anywhere. Birds have the playoff experience, Sean Payton seems to own the Eagles. If the Eagles can keep the balanced offense going they have a shot. If the Birds can win this game they will be in the Super Bowl - neither Chicago nor Seattle will beat them next week. What the hell, pass the kool-aid.

I think we all see the Eagles looking very confused on defense, unable to slow down the run or the pass, unable to pressure Brees with the front four, unable to get off the field. I see some demoralizing big plays.

Eagles have to tackle better than any game so far this season and not overplay the cutbacks. They have to create turnovers and can ill-afford too many 3 and outs on offense. Reid can't outthink himself or be overly agressive. Last week they took what the Giants gave them with the short passing game and were able to move the ball, albeit slowly.

If the Eagles play inspired ball for 4 quarters like against the Cowboys on Xmas, they'll win. Should be a close game.

Slow start by offense in emotionally charged dome, defense plays well against wide-eyed Saints but gives up some big plays for scores. Offense recovers in time to win.

I think this will be a helluva game, but like last time I think the Saints will squeeze in a field goal to take it. As a couple people have said, I also think that this game will basically be the NFCCG.

I would like to see a continuation of this win streak as much as anyone. With the amount of poise the Birds have shown on the road during this stretch, I feel that it can continue in NO. Birds will scratch, claw and gamble for a big win on the road.

Due to his performance from the last time these two teams met, Michael Lewis is not allowed to line up in the secondary at all. Jim Johnson still needs to have his "playmakers" on the field though, so Lewis sees significant time at both DE and DT. The Saints ground game continually plows into his side of the field, gouging the Eagles D and yet they fail to convert on the touches-of-down variety.

The game becomes eerily reminiscent of the last game, with the Saints driving for 7:30 to try to set up the winning FG. They attempt to run Reggie Bush at Michael Lewis to chew a little more clock, when suddenly Lewis forces a fumble which is returned for a TD causing much rejoicing. The Saints then take the ensuing kickoff to mid-field, causing my ulcer to explode. As I watch the final seconds doubled over in pain, the Eagles D stops Brees on 4 successive plays.

If the Eagles win, they'll go to the Super Bowl. If the Saints win, they would beat Seattle at home but lose to Chicago on the road.

That team is not built for a cold weather game on the grass.

Having said that, the Eagles only shot is being +2 or more in turnovers for the game, giving the offense a short field for at least one of those possessions.

Time of possession is also huge for them this week.

The run ends this Saturday night. It was a fun 6 weeks though.

Red Zone defense will also be key. Holding them to FGs instead of TDs as they've been doing over this run.

That was said of another team that beat the Eagles in January years ago.

Truth is, with the way Chicago lost last year to Carolina, their coaching staff is going to have to do a lot more to win them the game, because coaching counts now more than ever. Just because it's cold and grassy in Chicago doesn't net them a win.

"Only road divisional round game the Eagles have EVER won that I can remember was the Bears game a few years ago."

If I am not mistaken, its only happened four times in the NFC: the Eagles/Bears game you mentioned, the Fah-vre Packers at the 'Stick, Carolina waxing the Gmen in the swamps last year, and Vick ending the Lambeau unbeaten streak for the Pack.

Carolina beat Chicago in the Divisional and the Giants in the WC. The Vick Lambeau game was a wild card wekend game b/c the Eagles beat the Falcons that year at the Vet in the divisional round.

So it was four, I just had them more wrong than right.

Replace CAR/NYG with CAR/CHI and ATL/GB with CAR/STL.

Very tough game. Deuce's performance will probably be the deciding factor, and I'm afraid he's likely to have a good game. Still:
