If there is a QC coach, will Mahe still have a job?

More importantly, will REID have a job after calling 75/25 pass/run ratio games?

Jules, as long as the Linc is banged out and the merchandise sells, the only thing that gets Andy out the door is 3 or more seasons below 5 wins. Jeffy's happy with a "chance" to win.

The problem is, we're not. But we don't really have a say.

Guys....surely, I jested!

I was merely expressing my severe sarcasm at the notion of a QC coach.

Breaking news

The Eagles wasted no time in free agency locking in one of their key defensive players from last season - defensive end Juqua Thomas. The Eagles re-signed Thomas to a 5-year deal on Friday. PhiladelphiaEagles.com will have complete coverage as free agency is underway

The money is supposedly:

- 5 years
- $4.5 million guaranteed
- $12.5 million total value.

GREAT value and renders my whole whiny diatribe moot.

Based on what Kelsay, Jenkins, and a couple others got in the last week, I figured we'd be looking at an $8 million bonus, but clearly JT's agent doesn't know what he's doing (which is good for us).

Typically, the Eagles like to sign the backup for backup money and move to cut a starter.

Hmmmm.

Wonder if the Eagles feel Kearse is worth the money he'll be paid this year.

2007 $5,200,000.00
2008 $6,460,000.00
2009 $7,720,000.00
2010 $8,980,000.00
2011 $10,240,000.00

If I were Kearse, I wouldn't but any green bananas just yet.

Too bad they can't get away with "Jamal Lewis'ing" Kearse.

Just a brief follow-up:

Kearse's cap figure is over $7 million this year. Howard's cap figure actually drops this year and he should be "safe" until about 2010.

I'm not saying they'll make the move, but it wouldn't shock me, especially if they draft a DE in the first round.

Cutting him June 1 means a $2 million cap hit this season and $4 million next season. I think he'll get a serious look-see with his injury by the medical staff.

IMO, Kearse is safe.

If he's healthy (and there's no reason to believe he won't be), he's well worth the money they are paying him and they don't have another DE on the roster capable of playing at his level.

Plus, you have to look at what he's getting paid over the next 4 or 5 years compared to what you'd pay a replacement.

When he signed his deal, it was a monster contract, but if you look at the market that will be established over the next couple days I think you'll start to see even more value in keeping a guy like him.

I think the Eagles will look at DE high in this draft anyway. They believe in throwing ends out there and will likely keep 5 on the roster.

With Kearse coming of an injury, Howard looking shot, and both being in their 30's, I think you're looking at a DE no matter what.

In round 1?

I would hate it, but the writing is on the wall. They are pissed at Sheldon and not only want to "address the position", they want to bring someone in to beat Sheldon out this year of next.

I can see drafting a good one if he falls to you, but they seem to be on a mission to grab one in the first round.

I don't get it.

He didn't play great last year, but I don't get it either.

He was coming off shoulder surgery and couldn't lift all off-season going into the year, so I'm not sure what they were expecting.

Before he hurt his shoulder in '05, he was lights out.

Considering how their front four pressure dropped off the charts when Kearse went down, I think it's hasty to judge the cornerbacks.

Now, that's not to say they won't go defensive back on Day 1. I think everyone kinda acknowledges that they need nickel help. No idea is William James will re-sign and behind him is a bunch of guys with lots of question marks. Safety is a possibility, of course. Just not sure there's a guy worth the Eagles spot in the draft. The really good ones will be off the board earlier.

Truth is, I keep eyeing one mock draft that has Willis fall to the Eagles and I'd be psyched if it happened. Doubtful, though.

I really don't get this. If anything, Brown was underrated before surgery. I didn't think he dropped off THAT much, unless they've got their nose on tapes and he's shown a sharp decline. Still, his performance shouldn't be taken in and of itself - that defense stunk a lot before they got themselves together.

Besides, he's a relative bargain unless you're trying to grab someone that's comparable for a better price, and I always thought that CB was a position where you wanted age and experience in some cases.

Still, hope it's not true.

Well, it's James and JosLOL Hanson, then who else? If they're looking to add CB help in the draft as far as nickel/dime help, it'd be interesting to see how teams play against them.

I think there was an outside chance before the combine but I think he's going to go higher now.

Regarding the CB situation, I'm not sure how you can look at this team, look at their season, and say "Gosh...if we only had another corner!".

The Eagles are fruity that way. I understand the need to get another corner in there, but do you really want a rook as your nickel anyway?

I just get the feeling they are forcing the CB issue and come hell or high water, they'll fall in love with one (Say...Ross from Texas?).

I just say that all things considered, the biggest need is still in the front 7 and you can get a body to play nickel and develop a young guy from the 2nd or third round behind him.

If they take a single offensive lineman in the draft...I'm pissing in Heckert's gas tank.

You don't think they'll pick another OL from the draft, giving the "best available" excuse? Bound to happen.

I think they feel that they don't need to address the front 7 - they're expecting big things out of Bustley and Petterson, Walker will still be running his mouth, and Howard, Kearse, Cole and Thomas will still be getting pushed around late in the season. Couple that with a hulked-up Matt McCoy, Gaither and Gocong, WHO WOULDN'T LOVE THIS FRONT SEVEN?!?!

These guys are either project guys that they're expecting big things from in these schemes (remember, don't hate the player, hate the game), or vets they think still have a lot left in them. In their minds, CB is a pressing need, even if Brown and Shep are still relatively young and productive. "Hey, they're young, but let's draft another guy who's younger and has a nice upside!"

The glass is really half-full or half-empty.

Whoa, what is that you do with bananas in your household?

The Longhorns secondary got torched last season. Ross is a big hitter, but it isn't clear that it will translate to the pros and his coverage skills are a question mark in my book.

So, I guess I'm saying that he's a perfect pick for this F.O.
