By the coach.
Maybe Reid's being proactive in making sure 5 doesn't have a sudden urge to be funny.

That's really interesting. The logic is sound, but what it shows you is while he's still loyal to McNabb, he doesn't trust him right now to handle the media/questions in a way that would improve the situation.
Really, I understand McNabb's desire to put himself on record given all the flack he gets, but given his history (especially last off-season) in these "State of Supahfive" addresses, it's probably a good idea that Reid grabbed the reigns.

In this case, I'm somewhat glad Reid IS a control freak, but this warrants another question:
Would Reid have gone for it on 4th and 15 with McNabb in there? Maybe THAT'S the question he didn't want McNabb to answer.
Still, Reid's doing the right thing in keeping the focus on him while keeping any potential controversy off the books for now (and there will be some after McNabb does his stand-up routine).

Who...Reid?
I'm a McNabb guy here, but I think this is a smart call. I can't think a good thing that could come out of McNabb meeting with the press right now considering what his Mama said, how his public comments about T.O. went over last year, and the media salivating over a QB controversy.

Why I love Andy Reid:
"Those are things that don't mean anything right now," Reid said. "You can just keep pointing the finger at me. I'm answering all you guys' stupid questions, so I figured you didn't have to ask him anymore."

I think he would have, but I also think his answer printed in that article is very telling.
They basically had one "money" play they would use if they were in dire straights on a 3rd or 4th and long. They played their card, it was successful, and it got called back. At that point, they didn't have another play he felt comfortable with. I think ti was less about down and distance and more about only having 1 play they believed in for that down and distance.
It's one of those things that's difficult to see coming, but those are the little things teams like the Patriots take care of. I mean, for 2 offensive minds to come up with the complicated playbook in history and only only feel confident about 1 play for a 3rd or 4th and long situation speaks volumes.
That said, maybe the playbook expands with McNabb in there because his arm allows you to run some deep outs and work the sidelines in ways Garcia just can't.

That's probably more telling than anything else in a number of ways.
First, it was mentioned in passing that they just didn't have the confidence in Garcia to throw on that pass. But Garcia had been completing long passes in that game (due to the defense being average) and one of the things Charlie Weiss was famous for was doing the same exact play again, because defenses wouldn't catch on to it.
Secondly, as much as people crap on Mike Martz, as an offensive guru the man knows his stuff, and I'm sure he's got stuff for 3rd and 4th and longs. It's entirely possible that maybe they exhausted their plays for earlier in the game, but you still have to try.
Still, you're right - nothing good can come from McNabb talking to the media, and he's already got enough stuff against him trying to come back from this injury, Garcia's play (some nimrod said that he thinks Garcia has 3 years left in him....um, no), and the unspoken notion that the Eagles were three points away from playing in the Super Bowl (since they would've beaten that fraud team in Chicago).

The middle of the field was empty because the Saints brought their safeties on the all-out blitz, which they probably would have done again on 4th and 15, so I don't think it had anything to do with McNabb being better at sideline patterns.

But it had more to do with McNabb allowing the coach to call a lot more plays to take advantage of his athleticism. It's obvious that they wouldn't have been apt to run as balanced an offense as they did with Supah 5 in the lineup.

Back to the questions...
So when WILL be the best time to answer the moronic reporter questions? They're not going away, and they'll be asked tomorrow or at the Super Bowl or mini-cap or whenever. It'll be an event discussed ad nauseum here and everywhere else. So when's the best time?
And whenever he starts the press conference, he should start it with "I told my mama to STFU."

I'm not sure if I buy the athleticism argument.
I mean, Mcnabb is a superior athlete to Garcia in almost every way, but in this particular situation, the "athleticism" would pretty much be limited to avoiding the rush in the pocket in order to get the ball out. I'm not convinced Garcia is seriously behind McNabb in that particular category (avoiding the sack behind the line).

No, it's just that he has no agenda on his mind when tryin to win games.
If the fields open, he'll run. Hey, I guess in a way, by doin that he IS shatterin the stereotype of the white QB.
You go- groundbreaker!

Not so much that, but if you're going to run a 20 yard out on 4th and 15 (not the best call, btw), then McNabb's arm is strong enough to get the ball there. Throwing that far an out with Garcia is an invitation to get Barber'd. That's where Mcnabb's athletic ability comes into play over Garcia's.
Even beyond that, IMO, if athleticism didn't have some sort of play in this, we wouldn't question whether or not McNabb in there makes a difference.

It's not so much a "control freak" issue, as its an issue that his $110 million, 30 year old, QB is a baby. It says LOUD and CLEAR, that he doesn't believe McNabb is capable of handeling issues that he has brought on himself(mommy stick up for me on your blog). What a great leader the Eagles have at QB...McNabb is a mental pussy.

I think the opposite is true. If McNabb is a baby, I don't know why he'd put himself out there right in the first place by scheduling a press conference that he knows would be a shooting gallery.

f-dallas,
Have you never heard McNabb on a National Radio show? Almost EVERY time he is in an interview, he always brings up getting booed at the draft, quickly followed by the "I'm the leader" and "Captian of this ShiP" bs....
He's not a rookie, FD, he's in is 78th year.

I'm not saying he's a bad guy, or even a bad QB. I just don't feel that he is the guy to lead this team through a tough playoff stretch. With all his physical tools, his mental toughness is not there. Great players have that tough/gritty/step on your neck to win edge to them. McNabb doesn't have it.

FD, you hit the nail on the head. Its a no win situation. The guy is 1/4 way through serious rehab and just starting walking in the pool. He will be grilled on various hard hitting subjects (TO, 4th and 15, mamma, garcia etc) any answer he gave would be twisted, cut and pasted to villainize (SP?) him or the organization in some manner. Guys like NEAG would have a buffet to pick and choose how to grill him on either trying to over shadow the team during their run or not giving a shit about whether they won or loss. Actions speak louder than words and the best plan of action is to let him get better and play ball.
Treo post, excuse grammar and spelling

So if it's a no-win situation, and McNabb is supposably media-savvy, why even entertain this in the first place?
McNabb had done a good job up until now of keeping out of the spotlight. If he knows that he's going to get grilled for a ton of stuff, and his responses will be looked over with a magnifying glass, then why do it? Especially since he seems like he has a scrapbook of all the negative things written/said about him that he keeps in the throne room like some crazed version of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

Why does he even need to call a press conference? What pearl of wisdom is he going to bestow on us? There is no need for HIS press conference. Just have the team spokesperson say his rehab is on schedule and he will be back early next year. Period. That is all I need to hear about McNabb. Nothing else. I don't care about his opinions, his stand-up routine, or if Ron Mexico was actually carrying his water bottle.

shot and bass, thats my point. There is NO reason to call the conference in the first place. I think they realized there mistake immediatly (thus changing the PC from wed to Friday and than cancelling it)
