Both F-D and IMS have solid points. I think McNabb wants to speak to show the media, fans, etc. HE IS THE MAN (in his mind) and assert his dominance on the team. So in that respect he isn't a pussy b/c he is willing to face the firing squad.

He is a pussy b/c his decision to speak to the media to stake his claim as starter/leader is motivated by his fear of fan sentiment towards Garcia. If he spoke, even ifhe spoke forcefully, he still would be speaking from a position of weakness b/c his posture is a defensive one.

And we all agree, I think, that he is a good QB with some ego fragility issues.

Being the control freak he is, Reid realizes all of this and wants to prevent it from happening. He knows the media will grill #5 and he probably has private doubts about McNabb's ability to deal with it. You'll never see McNabb lose his cool in a RYAN Leaf/TO kind of way where he screams or lashes out at the press, but he is capable of saying the wrong thing (even if he has a smile on his face while saying it).

And whoever says McNab needs to tell mama to STFU is correct. She was just being protective parent, which is the natural instinct of any good parent. But he has to tell his folks (mama and pappa) that he is a big boy who has to fight his own battles and that their comments, while well-intentioned, do nothing about add fuel to the fire in a culture with a 24-hour news cycle.

How the decision making process went down:
Mamma, I don't want to go face those mean press people. They will ask me questions about why the fans love Jeffy and not me. Dont worry sweetheart, I'll call andy and take care of this. Thank you mamma. Hello, Andy this is momma. Little D is not feeling good today, so he is not going to be able to make it to the press conference. I don't know what to say mamma. I think that these actions are each designed to make McNabb and Reid appear as if they are fearless and in control.

McNabb looks as if he has nothing to fear by scheduling a press conference with the Philly media who are anxious to tear his head off.

Reid looks as if he is in complete contol by vetoing the conference. He also conveniently gets McNabb off the hook.

While he will face many of the same reporters at his Super Bowl press conference, McNabb won't be facing the same kind of savage environment he'd encounter in Philly.

Some of these questions will eventually subside and go away. Reid and the Eagles are correct in assuming a Clintonian stance here because nowadays you don't see Clinton incessantly facing questions about Lewinsky. People have moved on, just as the press eventually stopped asking questions about the world's slowest Super Bowl two-minute offense, they will stop asking about 4th and 15, Garcia, and "bitter sweet" Mama.

Truthfully, there is nothing that would happen in a press conference that would help this team, but there's plenty that could hurt it. That's why I don't have a problem with this decision.

No one in this thread said anything about McNabb sucking as a QB. No one asked for someone else at the position, although we would all like McNabb to play to win instead of playing to prove a point. Regardless, evidence of his fragile ego has been well documented and cannot be denied.

Anyway, back to sensibility...

Didinger was on the Morons this morning, and he thinks that it was a bad move by Reid to cancel McNabb's press conference (there was an earlier rumor stating that the rehab wasn't going as well as it should have, which the Birds have denied). He says it was a bad move because it gives the impression that something else is going on, and, if anything, it makes it look like Reid is further protecting his 30-year-old baby.

Between this, the budding QB controversy, and the fact that the Birds believe they're right there on the cusp of success even though things are also thisclose to falling apart (seems like they're downgrading their expectations - from SB victory to SB entrant to NFC title game entrant to division winner).
