Here's a different question - how was the media like when Hostetler went on the fluke run of a lifetime and won the SB? Were the outlets in NY speaking in the same way as the media does here?
I'm just asking - I wasn't that deep into football back then.

Yeah, it was pretty nuts. There was a debate as to who should be the Giants' QB that following year. Although, Simms was a lot older at that point.

Plus Hostetler had a Top 10 all time moustache.
I love how people on this site always call out the media. Like when F-dallas claimed the media was blowing the T.O. think out of proportion when T.O. was screaming at McNabb on the sideline. "THey are trying to make a story out of nothing"
Evidently not.
And then there is Talon who claims everything newspapers get they steal from the 700level. Like the term "Inky". Let me tell you I used to sell newspapers as a youth and that is what we called it. THe Inky and The Daily. And this predated not only the 700level but the internet itself.
Also Talon said that someone in the "Saints game thread" maintained that Reid should have went for it on 4th and 15 instead of punting. And guess what Phil Sheridan's FRONT PAGE story was the next morning?
Lasy journalism by a hack writer.

Ugggh! The Philadelphia media is retarded sometimes. And that's not even including the "Mission Miami" crap we had to put up with in the first round of the Playoffs! What about "Mission Wildcard?" Anyway, I digress...
I love McCaffery's pull no punches analysis of the individuals he's writing about, but his QB controversy angle is horse shit.
Garcia did his job, he came in and ignited the team. Everybody including Garcia knew that once McNabb was healthy again he'd take the team back. This was understood from day one.
Is there some validity to the concept that some players might respond better to Garcia than McNabb? Definitely, I'm sure there were players that responded better to Hostetler over Simms, but that doesn't mean there is a QB controversy.
As for Garcia, if/when he leaves the Eagles he will be done. He likely won't play at the same level any place else. Age and situation will conspire against him. But hey, I understand his renewed desire to be a starter again. Godspeed.
As for McNabb, I'd prefer if McNabb would shut the hell up anyway. I don't need to hear any of his opinions on this past season. Next time we hear from him it should be about his recovery during mini camp. Talk about next season when the time is appropriate. Put all of your other agendas (on and off the field) aside and just do what it takes to produce a championship in Philadelphia. Stop talking about being "the" leader and just be "a" leader.

Revisionist history. There wasn't any problem with them at all at that point and the media was, in fact, blowing it completely out of proportion.
Just because they ended up in a feud later on (starting when Owens got hurt several weeks later and culminating when McNabb wouldn't lobby for Owens to get a raise after playing one year of his deal) doesn't mean they were fighting on the sidelines months earlier.
And I'm not "blaming the media" for anything. I'm simply saying there isn't a QB controversy because everyone knows McNabb is the guy and Garcia has no future as a starter because of his age.
Anyone trying to create a QB controversy is simply stirring the pot to suit their own agenda (give them something to write about). Not blaming them, but it's a fact.
The way this particular guy wrote his article was overly scathing considering the offense that drove him over the edge...Reid simply can canceling McNabb's post-season press conference.
You'd think Reid personally did Jack's wife based on the overreaction.

Well, to be fair...
one hilarity filled, insight deprived, cliche packed, "I'm the captain of this ship" reminding, sniffling, hairline receding, nose pinching, Supah Five Apparel pluggin' McNabb press conference can provide a guy like McCaffery with weeks worth of material and job security.
The guy does have to feed his family.

C'mon, NEAG. If you're trying to bait me, you'll have to work hard than that. You gotta at least put forth some effort.
I agree with most here that the first McCaffery column was spot-on, but this one was rather pathetic and desperately clutching for a story. I believe it was Seth who nailed it when he said that the Philly sportswriters have nothing to discuss with both the Flyers and the Sixers in the shitter and the impending sense of doom that always greets the opening of baseball season. They need to milk this QB controversy angle, whether they write stories in support of it or denouncing it, for as long as possible.
And I wasn't in New York during the Hostetler years, but I can tell you that having two football teams, two baseball team, three hockey teams, and one basketball team here, puts the city in a very different position than Philadelphia. It's exceedingly rare when at least one team isn't kicking ass, so the controversies don't stay on the back page for long. Plus, the fanbases are split so much that a Giants controversy doesn't truly grab the Jets fans attention.
Philly has become a one-horse town, and this winter is going to be filled with more Eagle-suffering.

Of course, they can share the same opinions, but I think you are really trivializing the argument. This went beyond mere opinions, although, to be honest, I really don't feel like getting into it again. It's over an done with now.
And the thing about The Inky wasn't exactly serious.

Not to take it in another direction, but from Coffee Boy's column:
1. Indianapolis (15-4). Smart idea by Tony Dungy, giving his team two full days off Saturday and Sunday before the mayhem that is Super Bowl Week begins. But I do think the Colts should have had more respect for the nation's media than to arrive for their first press briefing in Miami at 8:30 p.m.
Especially since the nation's media has so much respect for everyone else? What a nimrod.
13. New York Giants (8-9). Love the hire of John Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator. Not only do you get a bright guy who's learned under a good play-caller, Jim Johnson, but you also get a guy who can tell you a few secrets about a division rival.
The "division rival" part I get, but am I missing something here? How is the coach of the weakest part of the Birds' D a good hire?

Don't forget his insight on the Eagles:
Where there's smoke, there's fire, all you Donovan McNabb conspirators
He never misses his chance to take a shot at McNabb. He's been killing McNabb since day 1 and his reporting on this subject is "The reports I've read out there are ture, because I want them to be true".
Why not at least say "I've checked around and..." or "I spoke to XXXXXX and he said...".
Nope. Just goes with "where there's smoke, there's fire".
I can't wait for his Super Bowl pick. "On any given Sunday, either of these teams could potentially win even though one is considered better than the other, I've read".

I don't see what the big stink is about.
Garcia will threaten McLeader's ego, so, he's gone.
McLeader holds a grudge like nobody's biz. 12 mill/year can't disarm his anger.
McLeader is still the QB of this team. Getting a new QB who will need 4 years to sky-rocket in Reid's needlessly complex system is stupid at this point.
The real big issue that people should clamor about is the probable loss of Softserve. He did give McLeader a legit target.
Finally, McLeader should do the robot dance more often and think he's funny.

One question: What is it that McNabb has said, RECENTLY, that has angered the enlightened fan base or otherwise caused a controversy?
The answer, unless I'm missing something, is nothing. Ried muzzled him so his planned press conference didn't happened, meaning he didn't make any comments.
Sounds to me like some folks, including Mr. McCaffrey, are shitting on #5 for past remarks they disliked (ie. black-on-black crime) and Mamma's "bittersweet" remark.
Other than that we have the conjecture of Eckel (who has an obvious ax to grind), Sal Pal (an employee for the network that does nothing but cause misleading controversy), Angelo Cataldi (a longtime hater and a WIP employee, nuff said), the rest of the copycat columnists and the dimwitted fans who say, as someone on the level mentioned, said that if McNabb hadn't lead the team to a 5-5 start, they would have secured HFA with Garcia as the full-time starter.
If someone can tell me what McNabb said RECENTLY (other than published reports attributed and sourced to people close to #5), I think this is a bunch of pointless drivvle by someone who needs something to write about. By they way, who does this guy write for, the Delco Times? If that's his placed of employment, I'm not exactly impressed. That paper sucks.

No one cares what McNabb actually said recently. It's so much more fun to speculate on "what he might be thinking" "according to people close to him" "as reported in Philadelphia."

dino
my buddy and i said that all yr long.
when mcnabb got hurt, he was at the top of the league in passing stats, but many fans and the media in this town acted like he should have been doing more. if he threw a TD pass, he should have been running more. when westbrook had a great game, where was mcnabb today?? dino said it right, in this town, mcnabb is damned if he does, and damned if he doesnt.
lets be clear about this. the vaunted defense screwed this season. they were soft, lacked-heart, gave up big plays, and couldnt stop teams when they needed to. not a great combo.
and if you want to talk about QB's, in the biggest game of his career, garcia made one good pass, was inaccurate and missed a lot of wide open receivers. he came up small. and that was only in a divisional playoff game, not a conf champshp game or the super bowl. and against a team that really should have been beaten.
its amazing how in this town mcnabb is responsible for every bad thing that happens to this team, but garcia was the one good thing.
last i checked, garcia lost, and looked like shit doing it.
