I was just watching that Youtube video yesterday when I read a rumor about this. Should be interesting to see this guy at camp.

While I'm not sure how he could make the team given the extension they gave Dirk last year and the holding issue for kicks, how much would Philly like a Aussie Football Hooligan as the Eagles punter?

He might be the first ever eagle player to booze with the fans during tailgates.

Johnson getting demoted in favor of bringing back Koy Detmer, and now this...I'm telling you, people think he's funnier in the locker room than McBustAGut.

Hey guys

I don't post often (last one was on why manhole covers are round) but having just come home (July06) after a two year assignment in Australia I can give you some first hand insight into Aussie rules football. First off it’s not exactly rugby. Aussie rules is a hybrid game combining rugby and Gaelic hurling. It’s played on a cricket pitch (field) which is actually oval in shape.

The athletes that play this game are amazing. The ball is roughly shaped like a football but has allot more bounce to it. The object of the game is to put the ball through a set of four upright poles. Put it through the middle two poles and you earn 6 points, through the outer poles and you score one point.

I’ve been to a couple of matches and it is non-stop i.e. players play both offense and defense similar to soccer. The ball is moved down the field by the player carrying it (Running full speed). But the player has to dribble the ball every ten meters which is interesting considering the ball is oval shaped. When tackled the player loses the ball to the other side.

The player can pass the ball by either hitting it underhanded like a volley ball serve or kicking it. Keep in mind both are done at a full speed run. When they kick the ball to another player at full run I’m amazed at how accurate they are as they usually catch the other player in stride which is much more than McNabb does sometimes. Check out AFL.Com for more info.

These guys are great athletes and can really kick the ball even though the NFL ball is slightly smaller and heavier. The Jets have an Aussie rules guy (Ben Graham) on the roster to punt.

When I was in Aussie land I was in Perth which is located on the West Coast of the continent. The local team was the “West Coast Eagles” which was great being an Eagles fan. The crowd is allot like European soccer and you should have seen their faces when I taught them the Eagles cheer (working on international relations). It caught on quick with the crowd.

Any way, figured I’d clarify things. Keep posting guys, it’s a great read.

Cool. I think anyone who watched ESPN in the early '80s is pretty familiar with Australian Rules Football. I used to watch that every day after school. Loved that stuff.

Is it still shown on TV here? I haven't seen a game since ESPN stopped covering it.

it seems like they get a full head of steam up before punting, I would think that would add a lot of distance. Even so, he was booming them.
