This Heckert interview seriously reads like The Onion. This off-season sounds liek it's going to be a great disaster, by the way. I read excerpts from teh full interview and am posting highlights of those here:
Intro from Herkecrt:
“Offensively, depending on what happens with (free agent Correll Buckhalter), we might have to go find a guy, and we have to decide on Jeff (Garcia), and if we don't sign Jeff we have to find a third quarterback,” Heckert said. “But all the other positions, we think we're OK. Offensively there's probably not a whole lot we need to go out and get. And defensively, it's a lot less of a big deal than it was last year.
“We do have to improve. No doubt about it, we need to get better. But I think it helps us knowing that we don't need to overhaul the whole thing. That makes us optimistic. Especially in the draft, where we don't really need to take any certain position. That will help.”
Here are the rest of the highlights:
- The run D was great and the problem was they stopped using the rotation. Bunkley and the other guys will be better next year, therefore their run D will be fixed.
- On Matt MacCoy: "He was BY FAR our most productive player on defense for the first 5 weeks of the season until his shoulder injury".
- When asked what he likes about Sean Considine, the first words out of his mouth are "He's a really good tackler". I like Considine and think he has a future, but of all the things he did this year, wouldn't "getting trucked while attempting to tackle" be something to improve upon rather than touting his tackling skills as his best asset?
- On Trotter, his said he wasn't in good enough shape comign into this year, but he'll do a better job next year and he'll play better/his knees will feel better.
- On Stallworth: "I think he'll probably end up signing a pretty good contract somewhere. If you look at last year, those (2006 free agents) got huge money and they were just OK guys.”
- If they don't re-sign Stallworth: "We feel the same way as before we traded for him. If we don't get him back, we think we're OK at wide receiver."
-----
Ugh...I know they simply have to say some things no matter what they really feel, but they are fucking brutal.
Also, while I think we all knew deep down inside that Stallworth wouldn't be back, they aren't even pretending they are interested. What a fuckin' joke.
I don't think the entire interview has been released yet, but here's the URL to what I saw. It doesn't deserve a link.

I'm pleased to read this because the "what went wrong" threads at the end of the post-season are always fun reads.

True...
The next bit of news I can't ait to hear is Reid deciding to take back the playcalling duties. You know it's coming, too.
The way the Eagles organization thinks, his logic will be:
- Marty called the plays.
- We got knocked out in the divisional round.
- When I called the plays, we used to make it to the NFC Championship or Super Bowl.
- I should be calling plays again.

FD,
The only thing that you can hope, is that Heckert is not talking ANYONE up because they don't want to show there hand. Even though, you, me and even a toaster know they need to re-sign Stallworth. When dealing with scumbags like rosenshit, saying nothing is a good game plan.

It's one thing to understate someone's value by saying "We'd like to have him, but we feel good about the guys on our roster, too". I get that.
To go so far as to suggest he'll probably sign elsewhere because teams will over-value him? Taking it a little far, IMO. Not exactly the kind of thing that builds good will.
They didn't say that about Jeff Garcia.
Also, Stallworth and Westbrook were on ESPN News today. Stallworth said "He wants to be back in Philly and he expects the deal to get done". Westbrook said "He's a playmaker and we need his deep speed to stretch the field for the other WRs. I hope our F.O. is listening!"
Super.

A good thing for us, as Eagle fans, is that Stallworth does want to stay here. That is a huge plus.

im not gonna read to much into it. He didnt say anything really. In fact he said he is content with everything on this team. They say that every year. They said they were happy with thier WR's before the NO trade, yet they gave up a 4th round pick and a LB they "loved". I wouldnt take anything he says at face value.

Not reading too much into it either . . . there's still plenty of time in the offfseason for all this to shake out. That said, it's not encouraging for Heckert to say Stallworth will collect a lot of money (be overpaid) elsewhere and not live up to whatever deal he signs. It's like they're already preparing their excuse now, so when he bolts b/c the Bids didn't want to come off dime, the groundwork had already been laid to explain it all away.
"He got overpaid" they'll say. "Look at Deion Branch and Javon Walker, they signed mega deals and were good but not great. We feel fine with the wideouts on the roster."
Give me an effing break. If it goes down this way in the offseason, sign me up for some robes.

It's all smoke, mirrors, lies, misdirection and Klingon cloaking devices! There's no reason to tell the truth! There's no reason to give people anything to talk about. word?

This is really shaping up for an ugly ending. I'm starting to think the Eagles don't want him back-- even at a bargain price. It's as if they believe that re-signing Stallworth will hinder the future Pro Bowl careers of Hank Baskett and Jason Avant. Stallworth will never be good enough because they didn't draft him. The only players who are worth any money are those that the front office drafted. After all, Spuds nailed the organization's mantra when he stated "Free agents are another team's garbage."
You can tell this is going to be one nasty and embarassing denouement. I get the sense that they won't even offer Stallworth a contract, or if they do, it will be an incredibly insulting lowball figure.

These are getting ridiculously predictable. I can almost hear Li'l Joe & the gang at the meeting;
Li'l Joe - Great season Andy. Those late wins helped sell a lot of merchandise. And the home Playoff game made us a mint, what with only having to pay the players the standard fees.
Andy - Thanks Joe. It's a shame we had to pay Jevon and Donovan since they didn't play that much. Speaking of which, Wilma asked if we could sign young Stallworth, so her Donnie-poo would have a deep threat.
Li'l Joe - Perish the thought, Andy. We didn't draft Stallworth. We simply can't afford to waste money on him, when we could shore up our own picks with long-term deals. It simply won't do. Plus we would have to part with a precious draft pick. Nothing doing.
Andy - But the fans sure seem to like him.
Li'l Joe - Screw them. Did you know that not one of those ungrateful Bastards sent Mr. Lurie a Christmas card? Not one. No Stallworth.
Andy - OK, Joe. Tom, Spuds, let's get this thing started. Tom, run "soft pedal scenario 56B". That's the one where we just talk about him being overpaid, not his injuries. We can always come back to that. Spuds, you tell the fans to "get over it". You know, "aggravation scenario 34". They already hate you, so by the time they get passed that, the Fans won't notice Stallworth has signed somewhere else.
Tom & Spuds - Sure thing, Boss.
Andy - If that's all, Joe, I'll get back to writing more pass plays.
Li'l Joe - Just one more thing, Andy. I want to talk about this $2000 Room Service bill from the Econo-Lodge in New Orleans.......

Nailed it, Talon.
It's almost as if you're an outsider, you won't really be welcome on this team unless you're super-elite and you'd be an idiot to let him go.
Didinger was on the Morning Morons today, and he mentioned that Trotter was the best run stopper in a run defense that was just poor. I don't know how Reid...I mean, Heckert can say that the problem was with the rotation.
And Matt McCoy.....give Heckert credit for sticking by the guy he said he "would be SHOCKED if he wasn't a major star in 2 years".
Not even offering Dainty a contract (and with the Eagles, that "18" is their way of getting back at TO), what does that prove? It looks more and more like they value their 3rd round pick more than a WR with gamebreaking speed. So they gave up Simoneau and a 4th for a rental.
The most hilarious thing is that they assure you that the house is fine, despite huge cracks in the foundation.

I'd say that Considine is a good hitter and an average tackler. He hits guys like a guided missle, but if they don't fall from the hit then they'll proceed to the next defender.
As far as Trotter's knees, did anyone read the Sporting News article from mid-season on Trotter's average mid-season week? His knees sound trashed. He can barely move his entire body for a day or two after a game, and he spends hours a day with ice bags strapped to his knees - during the times when his legs aren't in a fancy cold/pressure $xxx,000 leg/knee rehab machine he bought for his house. He's pretty much in chronic knee pain every waking minute.
His knees aren't getting any better until he quits and gets them both replaced.

Haven't seen the article, but I believe it. Never really thought his knees were in great shape to begin with. You hear about his lack of lateral speed and overall lack of coverage skills, and you have to believe his knees aren't holding up.
Which makes it somewhat surprising that he'll be back here next year. I don't know if he can handle the load for another season, especially with that line in front.
And one more thing about the rotation - the only thing that was the problem with the rotation is that they kept rotating people in that aren't that good.

Andy - If that's all, Joe, I'll get back to writing more pass plays. I somehow missed the need for more than one good for a 4th and 15.
