The only thing that DOES affect his play is his feeling about running.

I DO agree with that.

His "black QBs can win from the pocket" mentality isn't a good thing.

And I blieve that some of it has to do with the incessant need to prove to people that he can win HIS way (sans running) instead of trying to win AT ALL. You see so much of Reid in that boy, it's scary.

That's where I would part ways with the theory, though.

I think he absolutely wants to prove that black QBs don't need their legs to win, but whenever he's been "up against it" and had opportunities to do so, he's used his legs.

I look the 4th and 26 game as an example. The Eagles were in the weeds on offense and went out and rushed for over 100 yards because that's what he needed to do for them to win.

I will concede that he's gotten better at this (specifically, the TB game this year), but I would want his mentality to be that of a Steve McNair, who also wanted to prove that black QBs can win without being like Vick, but with their arm, and just went out and did it. My point was that (either by the media or more likely, the coach) he tried to adopt a different playing style that was contrary to his abilities, and that his belief to win his way was detrimental to the team.

I don't think McNabb was ever more dangerous as he was in the 2nd half of that TB game, so long as he uses his running like Steve Young to keep defenses honest.

For instance, the fact that he holds onto draft day. It doesn't affect his play, yet Philly fans stomp their feet every time he mentions it.

because we want to believe, on some level at least, that our athletes are playing for us as much as we are rooting for them.

i remember ike reese being interviewed after the nfc championship game and all he kept talking about was how happy he was for the city and the fans and how much he wanted to bring a superbowl victory to the people of philadelphia. it was a great thing to hear and really made it feel like the city and the team were, pardon the expression, "one"

mcnabb, on the other hand, seems to play in spite of the fans and the city. he is at least as responsible as the fans and media for this divide between himself and the city, and it creates exactly as negative a feeling as ike reese was able to create a positive one.

That's the theory I'm working on.

I think some of the McNabb hate is due to the fact that he simply doesn't like Eagles fans. Not only does he just passively not like them (like the way Jeff Garcia laughs behind the scenes at how easy it is to wrap them around his finger with a couple "I love you's" and "most passionates"), he actively mentions incidents they wish were dead and buried because their embarrassed of themselves (the collective "Eagles fan").

I'm not saying every McNabb dig is based in this, but I think a lot of the general opinion is.

Poor, sensitive Eagles fans...they just want someone to love them.

Wow, what a thread; thanks everyone.

f-d, I typically like what you have to say, but you really came off as an elitist prick in this one. When do you start work on the Hillary in '08 campaign?

Why do you even root for a team that represents a city made up of people that you so clearly despise?

Wow. I'm sorry I'm late for the party. Anyway, a couple quick thoughts:

QBs who were criticized as much as McNabb:

Queerdell Stewart. The media even published pictures of Cowher in his tux and Stewart in his wedding gown. They criticized the "whatever it was" wrong with his face. His intelligence, running, accuracy, guts, manhood, sexual orientation, etc.

As far as his weak psyche off the field, it does (probably should say could) translate onto the field. MY OPINION ONLY: It would not take much trash talk to get into his head.

QBs I would rather have starting in 2007: Nobody!!!

Sorry for being late and sounding like a bad MasterCard ad. Priceless.

Didn't mean to come off that way, but I think it's time someone gives these "tough" fans some tough love.

I don't hate the fans. I DO think a lot of them are dirty, but a lot of them are also good fans who know a lot about football.

On top of all that has happened, we now have one more thing to add:

With Manning finally off the hook McNabb is now officially the best QB in the NFL to have not won the Super Bowl.

Wonder if that will be brought up in the ensuing months...

Cool; never thought you actually were an elitist prick.

And I think I understand your point - why do all these tough guys need to make such a soap opera out of the guy. Shit, just criticize him on the football stuff. If you aren't acquainted with the guy personally, why even bother thinking about the non-football related stuff? Makes no damn sense.

That's why I was secretely rooting against Manning (that and I didn't want to read another NEAG qb bandwagon diatribe).

Manning's been in the league one year longer, but it is true that now #5 is the only upper-echelon QB of his generation not to win the big one (unless you count Brees, Bulger, Hassleback, and Palmer as being of his generation)

I think Brees' handicap with Marty for years had him screwed, but he did have LT...the "ultimate weapon". McNabb has the same handicap...The Mule.

PS, Kordell was crying. If McNabb cries, he'll be the same as Kordell. Made of glass with an angry mob armed with stones taking aim. Shit....he already is that.

Can't add to the list of QBs that were maligned except for Warren Moon. Death threats, racial slurs, etc. All he did was post ridiculous numbers and beat up his wife. Although the latter came to life later in his career.

On a similar note of unfair criticism, Bruce Smith. Not a QB, but why so much BS for a HOF'er and a DL? He wasn't the reasons that Buffalo lost games.

FD, I didn't know that Garcia was playing the fans by throwing out a few "I luv yous". Just speculation?
