They've been patient, bass. Next year is his 5th year, and he hasn't gotten significantly better.

And you're talking about two different players. Brees was a stud in college, and was pretty good for a first year starter. Grossman had one noteworthy season in college football, and has been mediocre for 4 years.

How is there a comparison between the two? It would be like the Eagles thinking Hoying could do it, despite all the evidence.

The comparison is only based on someone who didn't live up to expectations becoming better after it seemed like their team was giving up on them. That's all. I wasn't trying to compare skill levels - that'd be foolish.

Most people would say "you're crazy" at the thought of changing QBs after a SB run. I don't really care - he's been inconsistent enough to warrant a change, and he ended up doing what pretty much everyone expected to do on the biggest stage with him behind the wheel. On the flip side, it'd be one thing if he played 5 years' worth of games, but he's only started 27 of them.

I'm offering a possible scenario and a reason why Grossman will probably be the Bears starter in 07, even if he's been wildly off the map. It's not like he's Spergeon Wynn or Andre Ware or whatever.

And as much as you talk about his turnovers Jules (which I am not discounting, btw), that defense couldn't get off the field on 3rd down.

I too think Rex is a bum, but I see Bass' point:

They performed well last season when Rex and Griese were injured with Kyle Orton under center. Nobody would confuse Orton for a ture NFL-caliber starter (and he averaged something like 10 pass attempts per game) but they still won with D and special teams.

I think the Bears brass believes (as I do) that Rex is still growing into the position (unlike Philip Rivers, who was on the bench learning b/c the Bolts had an entrenched quality starter, Grossman was sidelined due to several injuries so his situation is different).

I don't think Rex is all that good a QB, but I believe their thinking is that this is his first full year as a starter after being slowed by injuries and that with Tommy Harris playing on D next year and the electrifying special teams play of Hester, and a good young kicker in Gould, they have enough to win the way the Ravens did with Dilfer (speaking of which, did anyone see that story last week about Dilfer saying he will never speak to Billick b/c of how he was treated after the SB season when Grbac was brought in . . . Dilfer said that team could have won 2-3 more SBs with him under center, as opposed to the failed attempt by Billick to torun Baltimore into an offensive machine with a "real" QB).
