Ride Over: Cowboys' Parcells Retiring
Bill Parcells made up his mind: He is leaving the Cowboys. Parcells, who was 34-30 in four seasons in Dallas, says he is retiring from coaching. The Cowboys fell to the Seahawks in a first-round playoff game and have since seen most of their coaching staff leave

Full release from the AP:

IRVING, Texas -- Bill Parcells retired from coaching Monday, leaving the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons and ending a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

The announcement came 15 days after the Cowboys' season ended with a heartbreaking playoff loss in Seattle. He'd been at his office nearly every day since, and there were other indications that the 65-year-old coach was returning for a fifth year in Dallas and 20th as an NFL head coach.

"I am in good health and feel lucky to have been able to coach in the NFL for an extended period of time," he said in a statement. "I leave the game and the NFL with nothing but good feelings and gratitude to all the players, coaches and other people that have assisted me in that regard."

So, it looks like Parcells said "Him or me", Jones tied to call his bluff, and now the Cowboys are in serious trouble.

This probably means a new offense for Romo, T.O., and the rest...should be interesting ESPECIALLY since their defense is so geared toward the 3-4 now. It almost rules out the best remaining candidate (Ron Rivera) since his first order of business would be moving to the 4-3.

Very, very interesting, but I can't see how this is a good thing for the Boys.

Senior Bowl's coming up, too. So this is really bad timing for the Cowboys.

I think they'll hire Rivera and switch back to the 4-3. They're not that far removed from it anyway, and the Steelers are essentially doing the same thing with Tomlin.

Otherwise, they may go for Russ Grimm.

Wade Phillips' (a 3-4 guy) name has been circulating as well.

someone said this

Parcells' legacy with the Cowboys can be framed this way: Instead of joining Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer as coaches who led them to championships, he leaves lumped with Chan Gailey and Dave Campo.

Maybe TO will get his wish to switch to a 1-9-1 offense.

Please, Lord, make it happen.

Phillips is a hideously bad head coach.

Eh, that family is full of bums...

Parcels record speaks for itself. I really dislike him, but I have always loved his press conferences.

Wade Phillips is awesome as a D coach. Head coach, not so much.

They should hire Kevin Gilbride. Not only is the guy a doof but he makes calls that make Reid look freakin' fearless.

One thing we haven't considered is the ripple effect of Parcells leaving.

Reid now reclaims his crown as "bustiest" coach in the NFC.

You know...there are a lot of similarities between the the way the current administration in the White House is portrayed and the Eagles front office.

Does anyone get the feeling that The Birds have a giant "Mission Accomplished" banner somewhere in the Novacare complex?

Is it any wonder that Lurie is such a huge Bush supporter?

Lurie started the war in Iraq. McNabb suggested we send 21,500 more troops.

We may have to stop using the term "Bush Supporter" now that Hillary has declared her intentions (we don't want any confusion).

http://www.newsmeat.com/sports_political_donations/Jeffrey_Lurie.php

It's hard to read his politics here, as he gave to a lot of liberals when he was younger and then increased his contributions to conservatives as he aged. He straddled the fence a lot in presidential elections, supporting both Clinton & Dole and Bush & Gore, but that's fairly standard in the business world.

Notably, he supported Bush in the last election but did not support his fellow Bostonian, John Kerry.

Hmmm.... Seems the Cowboy Alumni at ESPN(Irvin et al) are very happy to see Parcells go...

Kind of curious as to who in their right mind would want to take over a team that is actually coached from the owners box and has several "high priced mouths" that never know when to shut-up.

I suspect the coaching search will be long and arduous. Only an idiot would coach in Dallas with the current situation.

Dallas thankfully has turned into another Washington Redskin clone. An owner who throws around money and still has not found the right combo (locker room chemistry) to win since "He who has stiff hair" built the last dynasty.

"Dallas thankfully has turned into another Washington Redskin clone."

Hey, you can give thanks all you want but Dallas hasn't been very good for about a decade and it hasn't really improved your situation.

I know that may sound like a typical Boys fan, but your cliches and generalizations sound like the typical rival.

Yes, Parcells' delay could indeed make the coaching search long and arduous. I was hoping Parcells would be back for one more year so we could have a shot at Jeff Fisher in '08...timing is everything. But "Only an idiot would coach in Dallas with the current situation?" What current situation is that?

With regards to the TO signing, you may have a point. I never wanted him here and most coaches wouldn't dig it much either. But Parcells has had more control and autonomy here than any before him. Jerry is a lot of things but he is not stupid and tends to learn with the mistakes he makes. Yeah, he's got lots and money but at least he doesn't have any problem spending it in an attempt to improve the team.

Besides, if it's not TO, it's Michael Irvin, or Thomas Henderson or Duane Thomas. Dallas has always had 'characters and controversy...guess we're just used to it.

"Team chemistry?" Please. Parcells bought a discipline and work ethic back that had been missing for a long time...ask greg Ellis about what he's done in his four years here.

There are a couple reasons the Cowboys wouldn't be the first choice for a lot of coaches, but I don't think the job will be tough to fill. Every job in the NFL is a pretty good one, and the Cowboys are one of the very few jobs that seems to be high profile whether they are good or bad, so it won't be impossible to fill by any stretch.

However, T.O. was only really courted by the Cowboys last off-season. That means no other owners or coaches wanted to deal with him.

Now, they are going to be forced to marry a new coach to him.

Let's also not forget that he and Glenn are a combined 67 years old, the first year starter at QB might be swimming a little from his floundering finish, and they all have to learn a new offense now?

Plus, there's the defense (as previously mentioned). They have to stick with the 3-4 with the investments they've made in 3-4 players over the past couple drafts, IMO. That could limit them in their search.

I don't think it will be tough to fill the spot, but I do think the Boys are behind the 8-ball on this one...timing is just awful for them.

Oh man...CLASSIC quotes from our old pal O.D.

T.O. happy to say goodbye to old school
By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.

STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

IRVING - After sometimes going a week or two without talking to Bill Parcells during the season, wide receiver Terrell Owens said the coach's retirement, which was announced Monday, was best for him and the Cowboys.

"I am just hoping his retirement brings promise to what the team has to offer," said Owens, who is in Miami recovering from surgery on his right index finger. "This past year was a big letdown. Hopefully, the owner will hire a coach to take the team to the next level."

Owens described the team's locker room environment, fostered by Parcells' old school ways, as difficult.

"Sometimes change is good," Owens said. " I think it was needed."

Owens understands there will be speculation that "he ran Parcells out of here" -- especially after a season that included injuries, an accidental overdose and complaints about his role.

Owens said that, after everything he had been through in San Francisco and Philadelphia, he initially thought Parcells might be good for him.

The receiver's impression changed when Parcells didn't offer any encouragement after Owens' accidental overdose

"I still think he is a great guy," Owens said. "But he is like my grandmother. You love the person, but they are stuck in their old school ways."

He said Parcells' coaching style "hurt us."

"You don't know who is doing what," Owens said. "You don't know who is calling plays. That is why our offense was up and down. You saw that at the end of the year. It filtered off. We as a team felt the frustration. I felt the frustration. But Bill is Bill."

Owens caught 85 passes for 1,180 yards and had a league-high 13 touchdowns. But he was undone by a league-high 18 dropped passes.

He said hand injuries were to blame for some of the drops, but said not being made the focal point of the offense was the biggest problem.

"I was underutilized in the offense," Owens said. "A new coach can be good for the Cowboys. It's not just me. But my teammates know I could have done more. I wasn't used as a No. 1 receiver."

Regarding his surgically repaired finger, Owens said he is well ahead of schedule. A second phase of the surgery is to be performed sometime in the next six weeks.

Owens hasn't been back to Dallas since the end of the season.

He said he will be ready to play in 2007.

The Cowboys must decide if they want him back. Owner Jerry Jones said he wants Owens to return, but the new coach might make the decision.

Owens is due a $3 million roster bonus in June.
