I believe the GM during the Skins glory days was Charley Casserly.

kalbo makes a great point, the Dallas - Minny trade that bagged Dallas the building blocks for those championships in the early 90's benefited mostly from one thing... the keen talent evaluation of Jimmy Johnson and his ability to not only make a solid first round pick, but find gems on day two. The other ingredient was Johnson's ability to coach and get those guys to produce.

Look at what happened to Washington, they had that windfall trade with New Orleans which got them Champ Bailey, Chris Samuels and LaVar Arrington but they never did anything with those guys... Was it the new ownership? (Snyder) Was it the coaching staff? Who knows?

The Eagles have a stable front office and staff, their drafting has been spotty and their free agent evaluation has been off the mark too. I do have a problem with them shopping in the scratch and dent section for free agents, but that's their philosophy, whatever. Despite some personnel blunders, the ingredients for a championship are still there in Philly, if they could only put it all together. Like somebody pointed out (Talon?), it might require some breaks to come their way on the field and with injuries because they're not gonna relinquish their management philosophy.

They're already heading down the wrong path in 2007 with the Donte Stallworth situation so I'm not overly optimistic right now.

But they have Jason Avant - who's just as fast and is a quarter of the price! It's like buying month-old store brand imitation crab meat instead of getting it fresh from the sea....you can't tell the difference!

Nope. Beathard was the GM in the '80s glory years. Casserley helmed the Snyder-era Skins.

Weird. There must have been some overlap or co-GM duties at some point between Casserly and Beathard:

"Considered by many as one of the most respected General Managers in the NFL throughout his career, Casserly most recently served as Senior Vice President & General Manager, Football Operations, for the expansion franchise Houston Texans beginning in 2000 through last season. He headed all football Operations for the club.

In his highly successful 23-year career with the Washington Redskins, Casserly was known for his tireless work ethic and keen eye for football talent. Washington went to four Super Bowls during Casserly’s tenure, winning three.

Casserly famously started with the Redskins in 1977 as an unpaid intern under Hall of Fame coach, George Allen."

Snyder bought the Skins in '99 and Casserly left in 2000 to GM the Texans (their first GM). But not before setting up the Skins with some sweet draft picks thanks to Ditka.

Casserly...yes that's the name. Thanks. I think the problem he had in Houston was a continuation of the problems he had in Washington near the end of his tenure there. All of his successes (as well as Gibbs first tour there) were prior to the free agency era. The Skins were the most successful team in the division because Jack Kent Cooke was willing to do what it took to keep players happy in Washington and Casserly was the true talent evaluator. Gibbs ran the football side of the organization but relied on Casserly to find the players and Cooke to keep them well-paid. In that system, the big spenders were winners (SF and Washington come to mind). Teams that had cheap ownership (Norman Braman comes to mind) were never going to be able to compete at the top level.

Free agency destroyed that picture and players could then easily walk away to the highest bidder. Salary caps, of course, forced teams to stay within reason and may well be the reason that the Eagles are now able to stay competitive with thier current ownership. Cooke died, Snyder the big spender bought the team from the Cooke family but foolishly felt that he could function as the talent evaluator as well. He operspent on over-the-hill talent and built many teams with big name starters and no depth. The Cowboys were all set to be not only the team of the 90s but beyond as well. They had Jones who was willing to spend whatever it took (and if you don't believe that, look at their new stadium), but was limited by the cap. He foolishly thought he could evaluate the talent after his disagreement with JJ forced him out of town, but has suffered tremendously since.

Casserly is still a good evaluator of talent, and Dom Capers was a committed coach, but Houston was never (and still is not) able to establish itself as a "destination" that free agents want to be a part of. They don't win games, the weather sucks, not exactly a nightlife hotspot, etc. Botching the Reggie Bush pick obviously doesn't help things...if he went there and was able to get things going, that could have turned the tide down there.

So, they're only hope was draft choices, and even good draft choices won't develop without veteran leadership in place.

Found this on the Wikipedia page for Houston Texans:

Following the 2006 season in which he did not play due to injury, running back Domanick Davis announced he was changing his name to Domanick Williams. He changed his number from 37 to 31 as well.

Is this name-changing thing in the NFL becoming an epidemic???

Beathard was GM from 1978-1989.

Casserly succeeded him from 1989-1999.

Gibbs won Super Bowls under both of them.

I caught that one a few days ago as well, Kalbo. I'm hoping that the fantasy football talking heads stay quiet about it next year so I can steal him late in a draft.

Peterson to James? Davis to Williams?

Do these guys have any creativity?

Why not Dominick Gbaja-Biamila-Shaka-Zulu?
Or Dominick Lipschitzenfeldenstein?
Or Dominick Hu-Tao Wong Wu-Tang Yun Fat?
