Hard to say. He's been a longtime assistant, and I never heard anyone who said much of anything about him during his tenure here.

He coached the team's biggest defensive weakness, although most of that weakness has to be blamed on mediocre personnel.

To me, he seems like a weird, almost desperate choice for the Giants, as if they're hoping to magically find lightning in a bottle by hiring a guy at random. Perhaps no one really wanted this job, as almost everyone recognizes that Coughlin is on the clock with little chance to succeed. Of course, after watching Mike Tomlin jump to the top of the heap in his first year as a coordinator, I can't blame him for taking a chance.

Honestly?

He's a respected coach and the players seem to love him, but his resume is pretty weak.

He was credited with helping bring Lito, Sheldon, and Rod Hood along as the secondary coach, but he's been a linebackers coach for 3 or 4 years and the linebackers are putrid. That's a chicken and egg thing, though...I'm not certain they don't just stink and he has nothing to do with it.

Basically, he hasn't accomplished much and is a pretty low-profile hire for the Giants considering the many guys out there that would be more desirable for the job, but I think they got stuck.

With Coughlin being considered a lame duck, I don't think many of the "genius" coordinators coming out wanted the job (looking for a more stable situation), so I think the Giants got stuck rolling the dice on a guy who has been associated with good defenses for some time.

I have no idea what kind of job he'll do, but I get the feeling that the Giants and Spagnuolo are taking a shot on each other.

Spagnuolo wouldn't be able to get a more desirable job and the Giants can't get a more desirable coach, so they are both going to take a shot and hope they strike gold.

The players always speak highly of him (for whatever that's worth).
