FA Positions of interest: Secondary

In the secondary, the Eagles have Mikell, Lewis, Hood, and James hitting FA. That means the only people returning are the starters and Joselio. Yikes.

I think they’ll be drafting a couple players for the secondary, but I’m going to look at backup veterans in FA who could add something, rather than the best out there (since there is no shot Clements or Samuel would be on their shopping list).

Will James
He’s got the size, speed, and talent you want. Because of his serious injury history and struggles staying healthy last year, he can likely be had cheap and could really pay off.

That said, how can you count on the guy? Tough call here, but if they sign him I’d expect a high pick spent on a CB as well.

Lenny Walls
Not a great player, but not awful as a nickel. The thing I like about him is his size (6’4”). The Eagles need someone with a little size to match up against Plax (with help over the top). Walls could be a good reserve signing for this reason alone.

Phillip Buchanon
I have no idea what happened to this kid. He seemed to be off to a GREAT start in his career and was on his way before it all came apart.

Apparently he had an awful “U” attitude that turned off a lot of people and he was dealt from the Raiders after ripping the organization (not difficult to see why). Still, he was dealt for a 2nd and 3rd round pick…high picks from the Texans.

Things just fell apart there because the Texans stink and he was released, where joined the Bucs. They used him primarily as a return specialist early in the year but let him play the nickel later in the season and he responded. He had 20 tackles, 2 INTs , and broke up 7 passes in the final month of the season as their nickel back.

The Bucs fans, for what it’s worth, loved him and want him back in the nickel role. If he’s learned from his mistakes, he could be a great signing as a nickel back who would also be an emergency punt and kick returner.

Apparently this is not such a position of interest

There are a couple additional guys expected to hit the streets:

- Fred Smoot
- Shawn Springs

Smoot has said he'd like to start wherever he goes.

Springs is a wild card. He's 31 and will turn 32 in a few months. He suffered through injuries last year and has a $7.4 million cap number. The Redskins are expected to be one of the primary suiters for Nate Clements and they have expressed interest in Smoot, so it seems like the writing is on the wall.

I think Springs could be a GREAT addition as a nickel back if he does become available and no one throws starting money him.

Wasn't Springs a target when the Eagles played against him last year?

I might be confusing him with someone else, though...

I can't remember, but he had a lingering injury last year that caed him to miss 7 games (I think) and limited him in all the others. I want to say it was a bad hammy?

I like Clements, but the Birds won't outbid anyone for the top CB prospect who is still young.

What about Babineux from Seattle? He's supposedly a tweener and might be good as a third CB.

Buchannon I'd love as a return specialist. Bloom can't play football while he's too busy getting ass (a position I can't begrudge him), Mahe can't even bag groceries without dropping things, um...and B Mitch wouldn't accept vet minimum.

Clements wants a $20 million+ signing bonus. Whoever pays that (and someone will) is getting absolutely raped.

OK here's a pretty cool story involving Springs dad, Ron Springs his former teammate Everson Walls.

DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs was recovering Thursday after receiving a kidney donated by former teammate Everson Walls.

The transplant operation was performed Wednesday at Medical City Hospital in Dallas.

A news conference was being planned for Friday on the transplant, which officials believe is the first time former U.S. professional sports teammates have shared an organ.

The only other documented cases involving former pro athletes as donors include Greg Ostertag giving a kidney to his sister in 2002 when he was playing for the Utah Jazz, and basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson donating a kidney to his daughter in 1997. Basketball players Alonzo Mourning and Sean Elliott are among pro athletes who have received an organ.

Springs, 50, has suffered from diabetes for 16 years and has been on the national transplant waiting list since 2004. The disease has led to the amputation of his right foot and the big and middle toes on his left foot, and caused his hands to curl into knots. He also was forced into a wheelchair and needed dialysis three times a week.

Providing his body accepts the new kidney, he'll no longer need dialysis and can expect his hands to regain their normal form. He also should again be able to walk on his own.

Walls, 47, volunteered to be tested after things fell through with two of Springs' relatives who were perfect matches.

"I said, 'Well, look, I know my blood type is the same as his. Why not give it a shot and see what happens?"' Walls told The Associated Press in December.

Springs and Walls became fast friends during Walls' first training camp with the Cowboys. They played together only four years, but their close relationship continued, enhanced by their wives and children being close with each other, too. Both families still live in the Dallas area.

The duo had wanted to keep the transplant quiet until it happened, but worked leaked out in December through Springs' oldest son, Shawn, who plays cornerback -- Walls' old position -- for the Washington Redskins.

I should've posted this in the "NFL gets a black eye thread" as well

FD - consider the 49ers the violated party. Clements has signed (or is expected to sign) with them for $23 mil (don't know specifics yet).
