Chargers fire Marty

So they were pissed that he was letting too many assistants interview for non-head coaching positions, but isn't that how the NFL works? It's only human nature to leave for a promotion, and while the Chargers could have prevented the interviews, who would want to work for a boss who locks you in and prevents you from growing?

This whole thing is really bizarre because the Chargers have lost all of their assistants, and now they need to replace the head coach, too. Even if they hire Ron Rivera, they're really behind the 8-ball with little time to fill out a staff of quality assistants.

I gotta think it's the inability to win a playoff game after winning 14 regular season games and taking the "home field"...firing a guy for losing too many assistants is crazy, unless those assistants were taking lateral or lesser positions just to get out. It normally says good things about a boss if his people leave and get promoted to better jobs, but just the opposite if people leave in droves for other/lesser jobs.

The mess is all on the front office.

They are essentially saying they felt comfortable with Marty as the head coach as long as he had Cameron running the offense and Phillips running the D.

Both left for head coaching jobs, so they fire Marty...and now they have nothing.

The biggest problem with this (IMO) is Rivers. They've been grooming him for 3 years with the same basic offense. Now he gets one year of starting under his belt, had success, and both his head coach and offensive coordinator are gone. I wouldn;t be shocked if this causes him to take a step back.

"I wouldn;t be shocked if this causes him to take a step back."

More like two... then he'll just hand the ball to LT.

Still a dumb move on the Chargers' part considering the combine and and free agency are so close. I'm pretty sure Marty is connected enough in the coaching community that he'd be able to fill those coordinator positions. Now the team has to find a head coach as well.

So because Marty allowed his coaches to move on to other spots (knowing full well he wasn't about to take on both jobs by himself), the nimrod GM decides to fire him, thereby setting the franchise back even further. That's really smart, AJ.

He didn't get along with the GM at all, either. He turned down a one year extension b/c he was insulted by the length of it, and their relationship has been deteriorating.

It's almost as if the front office said, "We're not really that good. The 14-2 record was a fluke, so let's tank this season and rebuild for 2008."

Whatever they are thinking, there's no way they'll match last season's success in '07. I think they'll be lucky to make the playoffs, or even finish above .500

The thinking was (from what I've read) is that the coordinators got credit for the good job, and since they left, Marty wasn't worth keeping. It was going to be difficult to bring in a guy the GM wanted with Marty deciding on who the new coordinators would be.

this has been building for a long time. aj smith did not hire schottenheimer and was never on-board with him as a coach. according to reports, smith rejected pretty much every personnel suggestion the coach suggested and there was a huge lack of communication. has to be one of the stupidest moves ever made by a GM.
trying to confirm if schottenheimer has been accepted as a charter member into buddy ryan's exclusive 'fired for winning' club.

Winning in the regular season doesn't do much for a team if they can't get it done in the postseason.

Marty has that rep, but he got knocked out of the playoffs this year in a 3 point loss to the Patriots with basically a rookie QB and 4 turnovers.

I mean, if his FS doesn't fumble during an INT return, they win that game.

He has the rep in the playoffs, but I tink this is interesting timing considering how the season and off-season went down.

If it happened once, I'd agree. But his teams have a habit of collapsing in playoff games. It happens fairly often.

That game really shouldn't have been that close. But it's a stigma he can't get over, and this has always been since when he was getting bested by Elway.

Shoot, they lost a very winnable game against the Jets 2 weeks ago on questionable playcalling down the stretch, same as this game.

Marty did not make Ernest Byner fumble on the goal line.

But it's that kind of mistake his teams make every year at the end of huge games

And he's been in the postseason numerous times, and has yet to put it together to even get to the Super Bowl.

For whatever reason, despite his regular season success, his teams don't show that success in the postseason. It almost seems as if he plays the game like a regular season game.

Sounds eerily similar to the fat man, IMO.

Marty did not make Ernest Byner fumble on the goal line.

That was only going to tie the game anyway, not win it.

Word is that General AJ will not be bringing back Donnie Edwards, as well.
