Patriots agreed to terms with WR Donte' Stallworth on a six-year contract. Stallworth will earn $3.6 million in 2007 before a series of bonuses totaling $9.6 million are due in 2008.

It's essentially a one-year deal, a gutsy move by Stallworth. Stallworth will need to be truly exceptional for New England to consider paying him $11 million in 2008 without restructuring the deal. Stallworth gives Tom Brady a true deep threat, something missing from their offense last year. The Patriots should utilize Stallworth well, but don't expect him to start topping 1,000 yards every year in New England's spread-the-wealth offense.

Cheap fuckers...

It's a 1 year deal that becomes a big deal only if he earns all that money and keep him in 2008 and beyond?

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I like the deal for him, there is no way the Eagles were going to take the risk that DS could play that well and then have to explain why they didn't want to pay him NEXT year... Hey if he does have a great year next year it's an investment in himself either the Pats pay him or they will cut him loose but if he had a great year he will get paid elsewhere... good for him, I wish him the best thanks for the one year rental...

It's a no-risk move, though.

If the Eagles were really serious about winning a Super Bowl, they would be willing to sign the top WR on team to a 1 year deal for $3.6 million.

Donte' Stallworth 38 725 19.1 84 5
Brian Westbrook 77 699 9.1 52 4

Stallworth is the idiot on this one, Eagles aside.

Could Stallworth really not get a deal with more guaranteed money? Good luck being the league's #1 WR Free Agent next year - an honor he practically lucked into this off-season.

Its horse shit. If they wanted to put the best offense possible with sights of the SB, they sign stallworth for 3.6/yr. They also lose a lot of leverage with curtis. That being said, if they sign Curtis, I will be fine with the WR situation. The kid can play.

The Eagles are offering Ryan Fowler, a BACKUP linebacker for the Cowboys, a 4 year deal that would pay him 4 million in the first year, but they won't pay Stallworth 3.6 million for next year to give their franchise QB the best weapons possible to win a SB.

They are cunts.

Im gonna reserve freaking out untill the Curtis situation unfolds. At the end of the day, if the Eagles sign him, I will be very content.

btw, Spuds has officially peaked as the Tony Snow of the Eagles. His article on DS fails to mention the fact about it being a 1 yr, $3.6 mill. Instead you hear 12 million, 6 yr deal. I HATE HIM

I can't imagine they'd sign Curtis - if they did, you'd have:

Brown
Curtis
Avant
Lewis
B Johnson
Baskett
Bloom
Draft pick (maybe)

Seems like overkill - basically just adding another #2/3 to a corps full of 'em. I might be alone here, but I'd feel much, much better if they overpaid for a LB or Doss than if they added Curtis.

Jules reporting from Vienna:

Lots of ass all over the place. Wienerschnitzel is the food of choice. I keep snickering like a 5th grader in health class over it.

Oh yeah, the Eagles FO blows. You don't think Brady will make Stallworth look like Moss of old without the attitude? The kid is gonna make mad bank. This is about as dumb a move as possible. Is the WR coach influencing FO decision making cuz he wants to mold one that he can say he made? However, if I were Softserve, I'd have run for South Beach....plenty of ass and his money would spend well there.

We need a real replacement dink/dunk TE cuz LJ just fumbles and Stumbles is retired. I'd rather they go back to dink/dunk if that'd mean they'd run more. Ok, I'm rambling and jetlagged. Still lots of P'sOA here.

I am of the mind of driving over to the Novacare center and projectile shitting all over Banner. Butthole.

I don't like the Stallworth endgame any more than anyone else. However, we all knew they weren't going to put out an offer that would cause StarSpangledcuntworth (homage to his new team) to sign with the Eagles before testing free agency.

When he didn't sign for big money right away, the Eagles MIGHT (I said might) have thought they could match any reasonable offer that came his way from another team.

The Bob (I'm in FB's pants) B. at the Inky reported this morning that when the ($3.6 M) offer from the Pats came in, Rosenhaus never gave the Eagles a chance to match or beat it. They just signed.

It may or may not be true. But if it is, they were never given a chance to agree to pay Stallworth what would have been a GREAT deal for this year.

Eagles had the inside track for re-signing Stallworth. They shouldn't be given a chance to match an offer, especially if they let him go without even putting together a serious offer.

You saw what Brady did for Jabar Gaffney, and now Stallworth is in position to do a lot of damage in the league. Meanwhile, the Eagles' FO would tell you that
1) The market for Stallworth wasn't that great, which means that he didn't mean that much, and
2) We'll be fine with our current group of WRs, despite the fact that the reason they got Stallworth in the first place is because they weren't!

I agree, Seth - this was a cheapo move that should be hacked up and down by the Morning Morons.

The more I think about this the angrier I get. Cap'n Andy had better run a balanced Offense this season, because he just can't justify passing 70%+ and let every #1 WR walk out the door.

It's as though they sit around and try to find the best way to piss us off.

Exactly. The Gold Standard spends an awful lot of time complaining they they aren't given an opportunity to match the work of front offices doing their job (NEGOTIATING with a player until they find a common ground as opposed to not issuing offers, taking hard line stances, and pissing off the people they are supposed to be working with).

When it's all said and done, they silently cry "no fair" when the countless hours of hard work by non-mickey mouse front offices can't be given to them for final Eagles approval before they decree whether or not they deem the player worthy of the offer they presented to the Birds.

They really do need to wake the fuck up and look around. They aren't the model of anything in the NFL...they are a joke.

They have proven that they can put out a consistently "good" product on the field year after year, but there is this sense of arrogance and entitlement from Banner down in this front office that makes them look like the asshole in the room who just doesn't get it.

The guy who has worlds of self confidence and REALLY shouldn't.

That's what annoys me the most about all of this - this was a very doable offer, and knowing how the FO likes to structure contracts in their favor, this type of deal is very much within their realm. But they took the stance that it was worth more to them if Stallworth wasn't re-signed, just because of that draft pick. Even if Stallworth has health issues, he's a legit threat to the defense, and sometimes perception counts.

Meanwhile, we're to believe that Bethel Johnson "can't be caught from behind", that Kevin Curtis is the answer, that the receivers will be better than ever before, and that if everyone lives up to their potential, the Eagles will be much closer than a team that was less than a touchdown away from a convincing win in the NFC title game.

This raises another point:

Are we sure the Eagles would've paid TO after his first season? Is it possible (likely?) that TO was right that the Eagles were never going to pay him, no matter how great a season he had?

Looking at the contract, I was convinced he wasn't going to see that money after his second year. Either his contract would've been restructured, or he would've been cut outright. It just seemed out of place for the Birds to honor the rest of the contract.

Could be wrong, but JMO.
