Mock Drafts and questions etc...

OK I gotta a question not related to the Eagles but I guess being an Eagle fan I've been brainwashed into this line of thinking so here goes...

Almost every mock draft I've seen has the Lions taking Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin I see the value of a stud T after the last 6+ years with our bookends but why wouldn't they take someone like Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma who IMO as close to a sure thing as it gets as a NFL stud... he like Thomas has all the measurables for top picks at their positions... I just don't see why especially with Kevin Jones hurt and not likely to be ready for training camp wouldn't they take a stud RB, that will take pressure off the QB because they would now have a threat to run, seriously they haven't had a decent RB there since Barry retired...

I think the school of thought it you can find all-pro running backs in every round of the draft, but franchise left tackles pretty much go high. You get lucky every once in a while, but you don't find many late in the draft.

Look at the big names at the position and almost all were high first round picks.

Running backs...not so much. Tomlinson was a high draft pick, but Alexander was late 1st, Portis was 2nd, Tiki was 2nd, Rudi Johnson was 4th, Westbrook was 3rd, Larry Johnson was late first, Steven Jackson was late first, Frank Gore was a 4th, Willie Parker was undrafted, etc.

So while Peterson has to be temtping, I think the thought process is you take the rare position early and can likely snag a guys with one of your next 2 or 3 pciks that could end up as good or better (production-wise) than Peterson.

I think Detroit already had their chance at having one of the elite RB's who didn't even really need an OL to run behind. Their chances at landing another one, let alone one from a college in the same state are not good.

Build from the line out and all that, only I don't see how anyone can justify spending that much cash (as a #2 pick would get) on any position other than QB or RB. There's the rub I guess, but trying to shore up the line would be my choice.

Also look a career length. RBs only average around 4 years before the wear and tear ruins them. O-Linemen can last a long time, and if you keep them happy and under contract, they can be a stabilizing force for the whole Offense.

Well, as Lions fan I think the trade the other day kind of changes things. They now have Bell as insurance and they got an O-lineman. I am now guessing that they take Calvin Johnson.

Johnson would be hard to pass up, but don't they pretty much have the shelves stocked with Williams and Furrey? That's a solid #1/#2 and Martz should be able to pull a #3 out of a hat. Johnson is a stud, but the Lions would be nuts to take him, IMO.

"Best Player available".

You can have a so-so running back be great behind a dominant O-line, or you can have a great running back be so-so behind a weak O-line. Just look at Edgerrin James' drop-off last year.

"Best Player available".

Not a Lions diss, but that philosophy doesn't always apply to teams with needs everywhere. Plus, it's tough to imagine them taking another WR in the first round. That would be 4 in 5 years.

That's just tough to imagine.

Yeah, I don't know. I am fine with any number of players they might take. Thomas, Johnson, Adams, Branch, whoever. My preference would probably be Johnson then come back for the OL in the 2nd round.

What do they think of Roy Williams?

I know they like him, but do they "love" him?

I was just curious if they would consider trading Williams if they were indeed targeting Calvin Johnson.

Ahhh f-dallas, you're dreaming... but I like this dream. Only problem is... (Williams = too much precious).

I don't see the problem with trotting Williams, CJ, and The (Furrey) Rabbit out there as the 3rd WR. But I have no idea what they are gonna do. They need to get that offense moving a bit and there just does not seem to be impact defensive players up that high in the draft.

On theory that's a great tandem and one any team would love to have, but building from the outside in can be dangerous.

Hey, I don't care what they do. I'm just thinking what I would want if I was a Lions fan.

I'd want Johnson or Peterson, because those picks are a lot more fun, but in reality, they have to take a QB or franchise left tackle if they aren't a bunch of retards.

Not a "bunch", just one.

For the record, they said Jeff Backus was "not moving" from LT, so I don't know what that portends for the chances they take Thomas.

I don't really care, Tigers season opener is 4 weeks from today.

it doesn't really matter what the Lions do...as long as millen is running the show, they will be bottom feeders. and while kitna is an okay "hold the position" til the franchise arrives, they aren't going anywhere with him. thomas would be the smart move but there's no guarantee (see Robert Galley, Tony Mandarich). i also don't think brady quinn is out of the question there. they could possibly trade down for picks and still pick up quinn.

Could be a smokescreen, but according to reports the Lions didn't even show up at Quinn's workout.

I do NOT think the Lions are going QB.

If I had to rate the likelihood of their pick, I would now go something like this:

1) CJ
2) JT
3) Trade Down
4) GA
5) AB
