Vilma? One of the ESPN articles suggests that the Jets are entertaining a trade for picks scenario. The Eagles defense would be markedly improved instantaneously at LB and only require a good strong side backer and a monsterous DT to plug up the middle.

Personally, I'd give away a late # 1 for Vilma.

I like Vilma a lot, but I don't know.

If he costs a #1 and say...$14 million upfront? That's a tough pill to swallow.

Plus, there is a school of thought that he's a "run and chase" middle backer who needs to hogs in front of him. IF that's the case, Philly might not be the best landing spot.

This is from PE.com " a talk with Banner...

No," he said. "We were in the middle of the pack, maybe a little less than in the middle. If you have a lot of room, but need a whole lot of starters, that's really not a good thing. To be in the middlish of the pack and to have almost all of our players under contract -- really, for two years, because we now have 21 of 22 starters signed through 2008, with only L.J. Smith a possible free agent after the 2007 season -- to be in that position with our roster and to be in OK shape within the salary cap is a position we thought was a good one to be in."

Wow the Eagles will be going into next year with something like 20plus million in cap room and have their core signed through next year... Hopefully they extend LJ quickly ...

Without a doubt. To me, the value of a draft pick is only as good as the caliber of player you can pick up with the pick. Can you pick up a MLB, such as Vilma, that late in this year's draft? I don't see it. The only MLB I see in the draft, worth a first round pick, is Willis and he should be gone in the teens. Regarding the cost, I'd figure how much the first round pick's deal would be that late (not $14 million for darn sure), but also have to factor in veteran experience. Is a MLB worth that much in this scheme? I honestly can't answer it because they've done okay with mediocre to poor MLBs and done the same with a better MLB.

Tat,
I hope LJ plays likes he wants to be re-signed. Right now, he's okay but not spectacular. Considering the gobs of money thrown at mid-level free agents this year, I'd say it's safe to conclude LJ will be somewhere else in 08.

Agreeing on LJ being good, but not great. Vilma's a fantastic talent, and I think moving him to SAM would provide an effective replacement to what they have. You're talking pro bowl caliber outside linebacker material there, for a late 1st rounder? Sure, in a heartbeat. This isn't someone that is a question mark, it's a matter of money. NY is crazy to give up on him, and any team with the cash would be nuts to pass on it.

They could Franchise LJ, but I doubt it. I just read this at NFL.com;

According to the Indianapolis Star, Colts owner Jim Irsay expects Dwight Freeney to sign a long-term deal shortly. The Colts have used the franchise tag in four of the past six years, on Marcus Pollard (2001), Tarik Glenn ('02), Peyton Manning ('04) and Edgerrin James ('05). James was the only player who did not eventually sign a long-term deal with the team.

How come the Eagles Franchise tag comes with a bus ticket out of town?
