SPORTSMANSHIP
As a sports mom, I think it’s my responsibility to be a good sport, and not embarrass my sons or my family with poor behavior.
But sportsmanship goes beyond the field, and applies to all aspects of life, to people in all sorts of jobs.
Acting professionally in the workplace, and being a cooperative co-worker is just like being a good teammate on a sports team.
So even if I don’t agree with a ref’s call - or you don’t agree with your boss’s decision – I always try to be supportive and professional when I’m on the sidelines cheering on my son. I think it’s important to be a good sport in everyday life.
But the fact that the Eagles drafted a QB in the first really sickens me.
When are they going to put my Donnie first and treat him with the respect he deserves.
I hope Kolb is a complete failure so my son Donnie can shine for many years to come.
Love to All,
Momma McNabb

FB it's funny you say that cause AE and I were talking about that this weekend, basicly is it the QB that flops or does the team flop by not having/getting the right people around him to allow the player to develop correctly... Like Reid drafting McNabb and he got the other T (Runyan) to help Tra protect him... It makes you wonder if the Browns had drafted McNabb and we drafted Couch would the outcome been different?!?
Dan Marino
I know. I know. Once in a lifetime talent. But my point is at some point you either elevate your game to a noticeable degree, or you don't. It's still a team game, and some QB's are products of the system, but if you suck, it doesn't matter who the other ten are. At some point you're gonna blow it, and even the '78 Steelers D isn't gonna hide that.

Another example is Kyle Boller- if there ever was a situation for sucess, it was in Baltimore- and he STILL sucked.

F-d,
I don't think anyone suggested Garcia as a starter. You can't lump us in with call-in radio fans. Was/are there things about McNabb that are maddening? Yes.
Now, compare this to a kid who was barely listed in the top 5 QBs of this draft by many pundits. Most of us didn't even know him. I knew something or had seen all of the top 5 play at some point. I'm supposed to believe that Reid, who has a 65/35 pass/run ratio, who believes that he doesn't need playmakers at WR, who is resistant to gameplan change, who runs all WRs on slants and outs, who play-actions on 3 and 11 is going to make this kid into a star??? McNabb has talent that essentially all of the haters (even Neag) admit to. Most of us agree that Reid was not helping him by shoe-horning him into a system that didn't take advantage of his strength, speed and agility. His accuracy is ok, not great.
So, I'm to believe Kolb is the replacement? Of all the positions, QB seems to generate more busts in higher rounds than essentially any other position. The scouts that Reid has are not the same ones he had when he started his regime.
There is a lot to be skeptical about.
Finally, he gets a power back. The fullback is still barely used. You mean that the Birds couldn't use a quality TE to augment their offense? McNabb was pretty good at getting the ball to LJ and moreso to Chad Lewis. McNabb has done well when he has someone he can trust when he throws. He had that in Lewis (retired), Owens (went crazy and the FO didn't want to pay for his upcoming season), Stallworth (because he expected to get paid for services rendered), etc. Reid takes that away from him. McNabb doesn't have faith in Brown the way he did with the others. Curtis is unknown.
Anyway, as bad as McNabb is, I don't want a rookie to come in and spend 5 years just familiarizing himself with Reid's playbook when there is PLENTY of talent that could have helped this team BOTH now and the future. Afterall, a player that is solid coming out of this draft now is obviously still young and capable of contributing to the nucleus of the next gen players. I don't think that Reid needs to go all Snyder, but he could have had better balance with drafting playmakers, need and augmenting through FA. But nope....no sirree. Mule as usual.

Jules, that point has been addressed: who was there that the Eagles would have used right away?
BTW, it's going to be 3 years, at the most, until the Corn era begins.

modification: as bad as some of us think McNabb is (including Jules circa 2001-2005), he is still in my mind a much better option than Kolb at this juncture.

None of those guy would have seen significant playing time. That's how it's always been around here: rookies sit (for the most part) for at least a year, then contribute later on.
Why would you say Kolb won't be a significant contributor? None of us has seen him play, we don't know much about him, and the QB position is a pretty big crap shoot. So what are you basing it off of? Just curious.

S736, KB and FD all on the same page, let alone 1 of apparent common sense? Sky's fallin.
Jules- there is NOBODY they coulda gotten to help IMMEDIATELY after the Safeties and if you believe Eskin- the LB Beason were taken.
And of the names you through out there:
Spencer, Leonard, Gonzales, Branch, Meachem...
No to either WR- come on now, you know that story.
Branch? Another DT? Couldnt see them doin that- and even then, how much would HE have played?
Spencer I liked, and he is the only one who may have seen a decent clip of PT. So thats half point there.

Seth, I hear your points, I just am not sure I agree with them. You are definitely more of a draftnik than myself.
I said it before, but the way I look at it is:
* draft for player value > or = to drafting for need
* draft for depth
* draft for insane owner's desire or coaching "genius"
Are you saying that you'd have taken Kolb instead of Beck or Stanton?

Since Kolb is rated so high by many sources, it looks like they drafted for value and depth.
None of the QB's taken was a sure shot. It never is. THe Eagles weren't the only team to think Kolb was that good, too.

KB, not basing it off anything in particular but basing it off:
Reid's committment to getting his QB killed er...the pass.
Kid who only played shotgun but is rarely employed by Reid.
Reid's committment to the system above all else.
I agree, QB is a crapshoot, but I don't see Reid pulling it altogether even if he DID find a gem.

Strangely, I didn't hear/read of any of those sources till AFTER the pick came out. Didn't see it NFL.com, ESPN.com, Theinsiders.com, CNNSI.com, etc. Why is it that most of the pundits listed this as a big surprise?

You could make an argument for Spencer, but based on the evaluation of players right now, would you rather have had Spencer/Kolb/Hunt or Kolb/Birmirartcara!/Bradley/Hunt?
The trade down netted them another DE who was productive, the QB they wanted, and a nice linebacker prospect...the first real, true SAM backer they've tried to draft since Quentin Caver (bad example).

Not only that, KB, most of the people who "liked him" didn't think he was worth his position that he was picked at.

I've seen a mix, like there is with every pick. What do you think of Quinn? Some people thought he would go #5 overall. Some thought he'd go in the second round.
Most of these people, and us, don't know enough about any of these players to say anything with any sort of confidence. We're not able to see all these guys play, and most of the "experts" don't either.

No to Beck. Too skinny & he'd be too old by the time he was to take over (roughly 30, where McNabb is now) due to a missions trip he took part in.
Stanton I liked and a lot more apparently than some others- but I also recognize his limiations. Since this kid's feet / mobility are good too, then I guess I trust the rankings of some of the services who had Kolb rated higher, as well as the minds of Bellicheck and to a lesser degree, Billick who also said he had him rated high.
A lot of these guys came outta the woodwork late, after private workouts by Kolb. Performing NFL type drills etc, under center- throwin downfield etc (per Ray D) thats what raised his stock.
