There is no QB controversy here. There is also NO reason for McNabb to be upset. Every starting QB has to appreciate a quality backup. McNabb is not oblivious to his injury history.

The Eagles already have a pretty damn good backup and just signed him to an extension to remain their backup. Kolb wasn't drafted because they needed a backup.

And when McNabb does, it'll be the first time.

I expect Kolb to be developed, showcased and traded for a 1st round + pick a couple years from now, unless McNabb gets hurt.

And on top of FD's point, this goes against the team's philosophy of drafting for the future. If he does get developed and traded for a first, the team still needs to develop a QB for the future, and I don't really see Reid trading away someone he spent time developing for someone else's benefit, especially since he could be the starter here in a couple of years.

Honestly, I'm not sure I see the wisdom in drafting a pick as high as the second for the possibility of trading for a first.

That was only part of the equation. For the here and now, he has great potential to be an awesome insurance policy for IF the Eagles lose McNabb one way or another a couple years out.

The draft pick doesn't spell out the loss of McNabb a couple years from now as many posts suggest. The draft was in case it happens.

In the case that it doesn't happen, (which will be the case if McNabb is still the calliber QB he is) that's when we'll see the Eagles getting a first round pick and perhaps a player for Kolb - that's if he pans out to really be the calliber QB that some expect him to be. Think A.J. to Miami only bigger.

If that turns out to be the case . . . why not keep the younger, talented QB with no injury history vs. the older QB with only a year or two left before retirement?

OK- believe this if you want, ignore if you want- but apparently there IS tension at Novacare complex, though described as 'mild'.

Andy and McNabb HAVE spoken, but not at length.

It is believed by SOME in the organization, that the source of the sour mug on McNabb may be due to something NONE of US knew last yr:

They were (His reps and the F.O.) talking about a NEW CONTRACT LAST SEASON- AN EXTENSION/RESTRUCTURING BEFORE HE WAS INJURED.

Obviously the deal wasn't persued after the injury, and common sense now tells you that the topic will never be revisited- given a) the 3rd season ending injury in 5 seasons and b) their actions 3 days ago at the Draft.

Apparently- THIS is the source, or THOUGHT to be the source, of the McNabb angst and grumblings within the walls of Novacare- to SOME folks.

_______________________________

Guess he feels kinda like they really have turned a corner and he aint in their plans- all cos of another injury (Makes sense NOW why Poppa McNabb kept referring/harping on the flukiness of his sons injuries in the DN today).

Again- believe this if you want, I personally do- ties everything together too nicely and face it- if its $$$ we're talking about here- its FAR easier to understand/relate to even maybe, for some saltiness, than just plain insecurity--- which is a trait NOBODY wants outta their team's QB.

Seth,

Was this from your "source"?

Actually, I blame Andy for many of those injuries. His unwillingness to have a balanced offense leaves his QB with his ass bare and exposed to the elements. That is further exacerbated by his unwillingness to get some real playmakers for him at WR and TE to be able to get rid of the ball quickly. The guy had fuckin' Na Brown for several years to throw to. Pinky who couldn't even get off the line...etc.

Anyway, if Reid is hesitant because of the injuries, he's stupid.

Broken fibula? Are you effin' kidding me? That is NOTHING to be concerned about as long as it healed properly (which it must have cuz he was never hampered by it).

Hernia? Hardly a reason to be concerned. Could it recur? Yes. Is it a huge problem? No!

ACL? I'm curious as to what kind of repair McNabb had. This guy Freddie Fu (orthopod) pioneered a double bundle reconstruction which significantly shortens rehab, but I doubt McNabb went to him for the repair. Anyway, if he were any player but a QB or kicker, I'd be worried. Shit, Jim Miller (who sucked ass before and after his injury) blew out his Achilles, a MUCH more concerning injury for a QB.

This makes little overall sense. The thing is this, does Andy really believe that Kolb is a future franchise QB? I certainly do not.

McNabb could easily sulk and get traded/cut. I'd sit out the season, rehab and go to the Skins or Dallas who would snap him up in a heartbeat. Other teams that would really consider him: Chicago, Miami, Vikings or Baltimore. Chicago would be an ideal fit for him given its his hometown. Vikes would make sense with Brad Childress there.

McNabb has 4 years left skill wise and barring any additional injuries. Reid took McNabb as his franchise QB and started him quickly. So, he isn't in the habit of keeping QBs in the wings for several years before starting them (at least as a head coach).

By the by, this still makes little sense to me. This presumes that there is no franchise-type QB that will emerge in the next several years that could be drafted.

I think it was FD who made the comments, but this guy has had enough shit from this city. Draft day, cancelling his press conferences, not letting him travel with the team to NO for the playoff game, Andy's stubborness, Neag/BD/Jules' relentless message board shit.

I'm actually sympathizing with him, in part because of my perception of the FO's bizaare draft.

"Here's a question to the guys who hate the Kolb pick...

If McNabb can't win the big game, lacks accuracy, is a poor leader, is an Uncle Tom, is hated by his teammates, is injury prone, etc. how can you be upset that the Eagles drafted a guy to replace him? "

Because, as much as those of us who feel Mcnabb has all of these faults you speak of, we also realize that we're STUCK with him for at least 2 more years. Doing this now only makes things worse. Now he'll be even more disgruntled...he's already got daddy dearest running his yap. This could have waited at the very least one more year and without having to make the Cowboys better at putting Mcnabb on his back. It's almost like they sat back and said...

-ya know what guys, what can we do to get Mcnabb outta here as quick as possible? Oh I got it... make our 1st pick a QB and set up our most HATED rival with another quality DE to hopefully bust Mcnabb up for another season.-

only problem is....this leads to one thing....NO F'ING SHOT AT A SUPER BOWL!!!!

This makes little overall sense. The thing is this, does Andy really believe that Kolb is a future franchise QB? I certainly do not.

I completely agree that the injuries McNabb has suffered aren't a concern in the big picture, but the problem is he just keeps having injuries. I don't think they are concerned that the ACL is going to alter McNabb's career in any way, but I think they believe that it's possible his body is just getting more prone to injuries as he ages. I'm sure there is a genetic component to it all and I think they believe there is a good chance they'll never be able to "Pencil McNabb in" for 16 games games. It may happen, but they can't count on it.

Health is a big part of the equation. Manning and Brady, considered the two best in the league, just don't get hurt to the point where they have to miss games. Part of it is just blind luck, but I think there is also a genetic component to it.

Regarding Kolb as a franchise QB, he's a long way off obviously, but it's a little tough to have an negative opinion on that yet, Jules (IMO).

I've backed McNabb from the start, but I'm in for anything that makes this team better both now and in the future. I hope McNabb wins a Super Bowl and I hope he becomes a Hall of Famer someday, but my "hope" isn't holding his body together.

So, you hate McNabb, want him gone, and don't want to wait until a replacement is ready?

With that philosophy, the only solution is trading for a veteran and trading McNabb away.

What veteran could they get who would be better than McNabb?

It's an irrational "want", so when I hear Eagles fans bitching about it it sounds even whinier than any McNabb family venting.

Yes Jules- my guy.

Easier to slide stuff into existing threads than shine a light on em in an individual thread.

BTW- I saw on CSN today that Sal Pal claims a "Book it" on McNabb being traded after this coming season.
"They will NOT pay him 6.5 million next in 08".

In his defense, he might be more qualified to assess strengths and weaknesses of the team as he's spent a large part of the last 5 years watching them from his luxury box.

In all seriousness, Hugh has become a ridiculous WIP monkey. I can't believe a thing he says anymore (good or bad).

Plus, considering Hugh has thrown McNabb under the bus several times since he got his new job, I doubt he's on McNabb's speed dial.

Sal Pal guaranteeing McNabb will be gone after this year? It's possible, but he's a fucking fraud, too.

He claims there is no way the Eagles will pay McNabb's $6 million salary next season like $6 million isn't chicken scratch for a starting QB. They COULD trade him, but it won't be because he's the 22nd highest paid QB in football next year.

I'm so sick of reading about how poor McNabb's feelings might be hurt by this. If you're so goddamn good Donovan, you got nothing to worry about. You're God's gift to the world and nobody is better right? - so why even worry about a 2nd-round QB from HOUSTON?? Fuck you McNabb - quit bitching. By all accounts you pout around like a little baby. All the while your Mommy and Daddy are saying that you're "being run out of town on a rail" and not being treated fairly. Fuck you all. I'm so sick of this bullshit. Be a man and quit crying that you don't get respect.

Oh and by the way, I love the fact that McNabb has truly become the anti-Brady. #5 wanted ANOTHER extension last year pre-injury?! And here's Brady doing everything right and doing whatever it takes to make the team better. And oh yeah, he's not selling himself by endorsing every product known to man like McNabb.

I'm suddenly looking forward to McNabb leaving.

But to the dozens of nimrods who barely brush their teeth in the morning, he bring "unprecedented insight" from the only man in the Eagles locker room who played his season wearing a man-purse.

Hugh's indicative of the entertainment purposes only moniker I've bestowed on WIP. Even the serious stuff that happens you can't take seriously on there.
