"Nova, given the success of that program over the years and the number of high profile STUDS they were supposedly producing, you have to go back more than 35 years for another example after Larry Johnson?
Skit:
First man: "Navy sucks"
Second man: "What are you...a fuckin idiot? Ever hear of Roger Staubach?!?" "
Are you asking me to defend Ki-Jana "Give me that jersey" Carter? Please.
I can think of several "busts" from other programs as well. My point is, that saying Penn State Running Backs are soft is simply absurd. Judge Tony Hunt on what he has done on the field, not what players before him have done. The cat has missed one game his entire college career due to injury, he is a big, brusing RB that catches the ball well--he is not even being mentioned along the lines of a Curtis Enis or Blair Thomas, etc.
As far as the draft party is concerned, I might try to make it down. I can't promise anything at this point however.

Where did the "Griffin = Michael Lewis" talk start? The nfl.com reports list him as good in coverage.

The "Griffin = Michael Lewis" came from the Eagles. I think I'm the one who made mention of it, but I can't remember which article I cited.
Essentially, it was an Eagles writer or something like that and he said, from talking with the Eagles, they believe Griffin isn't good in coverage.
As far as the scouting reports, everyone has their own opinion. I've heard he's a good coverage safety. I've heard he has great ball skills. I've heard he's a cover 2 safety in the NFL. I've heard he gets caught looking in the backfield too much and isn't consistent.
The Eagles looked at him and apparently thought he got caught looking in the backfield too much and was prone to giving up big plays at the next level (or that's what they WANTED people to think).
Who knows...could be an accurate representation of how they feel or could be a smokescreen so teams think he'll slide or the Eagles have taken him off their board.

Oh, and the Michael Lewis comparison was only their feeling on his coverage skills, not his ability to play the run or anything like that.

I wish the NFL kept stats on how many times a secondary guy gets burned for a TD or big play.
Anyway, tomorrow I will be VERY happy if the Philly's first two picks go like this:
1st Round= Brandon Merriweather
2nd Round= Michael Bush
The Newcastle will be flowing if that pans out, especially the Bush selection. Why are teams so scared of him? It was just a broken leg with no knee damage if I remember correctly.

I think the reason teams are a little scared is he broke the leg in September and it hasn't healed yet. A broken bone takes what...10 weeks? He's been out of commission for 8 months and still can't run a 40 or really lift with his legs.
I would simply drop him a round and take him because it's "just a bone", but what if he isn't himself until 2008? What if there are more complications and he's never himself again with two rods in his leg?
Those are the questions a lot of teams don't feel like answering for a running back, which is a position of low priority (in terms of draft importance) in the first and second round for many teams.

SO what is probability that Andy puts the blinders on and drafts Ryan Kalil, center, USC, with the first round pick. You just know if he is still on the board, FB can't pass on a O-Lineman.

Michael Bush is '99 percent healed'
By Rick Bozich
rbozich@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal
University of Louisville halfback Michael Bush has been looking for something to get people to stop talking about his recovery from two broken bones in his right leg and start talking about why he should be a high pick in the 2007 National Football League Draft, which begins April 28.
Today Bush received his turn-the-page moment. Dr. James R. Andrews, the renowned orthopaedic surgeon from Birmingham, Ala., who specializes in working with athletes, wrote a letter saying that Bush’s injury is “99 percent healed.”
Dr. Andrews described his recovery from a second operation last month as “remarkable.”
Wrote Andrews, “I would estimate that Michael Bush will pick up in the NFL where he left off in college and should be a top ranked running back taken in the 2007 NFL Draft.”
“It’s just tremendously good news,” said Todd France, the agent who is representing Bush. “It confirms that Michael is doing fantastic.”
France said that he has e-mailed copies of Andrews’ letter to all 32 NFL teams. On Tuesday, France express-mailed a DVD of a private workout Bush completed at U of L on Monday.
Bush was shown running 100 yards, jumping rope, squatting 225 pounds and performing other exercises.
“He’s lean and he’s mean and he’s ready to go,” France said.
In fact, Bush is visiting the New England Patriots for an interview today.
Bush, a product of Male High School, broke his right leg in two places early in the third quarter of U of L’s season-opening 59-28 victory against Kentucky in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium Sept. 3.
Bush ran for 128 yards on 17 carries and scored three touchdowns before he was injured.

I saw that report, but I saw/heard two people talking about who had seen it (Mike Golic and Greg Cossell, through separate media outlets). Both said the workout was "a joke" and did more harm than good to his draft status.
They said that the scouts they spoke to felt the same way.
I don't trust anything that comes from scouts right now and I certainly don't trust the glowing report issued by the agent, but those two guys don't have anything to gain or lose by stating their honest opinion of how he looked, so I gave them a little more weight.

KB, here's another report on Griffin from Tony Pauline today:
Sliders:
Michael Griffin/S/Texas: Teams aren't sold Griffin has the instincts to play centerfield in the NFL. It is possible that he could fall into the middle part of the second round.

According to Eckel, who is a lying gypsy, the Eagles are dying to trade down but if they are forced to stay, they will draft Anthondy Spencer (DE, Purdue).
He's been compared to Trent Cole and Derrick Burgess for hi size (or lack of it) and motor.

It really feels like the momentum has shifted back to DE over the last couple days for the Eagles.
I've heard Moss, Spencer, and a rumor that they would trade up for Jamal Anderson if he falls to the middle of the first.

I always have a hard time finding it each year, so I figured I'd post up for people to look at a 'draft value chart' to see how the picks are valued and what compensation they may give to get something else.
For example, if Atlanta's still looking to move up again, their 2nd and 3rd are about the same value as the Eagle's 1st, and if they're looking to move down, this could get them 2 more 1st day picks.

Just didn't figure it would have been with the Cowboys.
The 2nd from Cleveland and Dallas' 3rd seems like a decent move, 4 total picks on the first day should help.

Other than the fact that the pick trade was with Dallas, I think I like this strategy. If a team's goal is to build for depth, and they have the track record of the Eagles for finding talent in the later rounds, the more picks the merrier I suppose.
(although I was somewhat looking forward to knowing one of the Eagles new picks already.)

I guess the big quesiton now is:
What do the Eagles do with their pre-printed "#1" jersey that a team usually gives to their first round pick at the podium?
Maybe they could just use one of the YellowJacket jerseys with the number "1" and the words "Gold Standard" on the back?

Sort of a strange first round I guess, but not too much. I question the Dolphis pick of Ginn somewhat just for the fact that it happened so high in the first round and Ginn seems to be more of a return guy that a receiver. San Diego's selection of Davis was in that somewhat gray area too, not in that he is a bad player, but just that he was selected that high I guess.
Posluzsny, Branch, and Houston are still on the boards on the defensive side. I think Steve Smith would be a good selection in the second round on the offensive side.
