A QB from Houston? I don't get it. I was fully expecting them to at least add to the Smurf brigade at CB. This is truly baffling to me unless Reid and Co. are not sold on Holcomb or Feely being a good back up.

BOOOOOOOOOOO!

WTF!

Leave it to Reid to draft a guy in the second round they could have had in the 4th.

This looks to be the worse draft for Eagles fans in a long time. Quarterback? Then why did Eagles take Holcomb?

And so none of the first round cornerbacks, safeties, or linebackers would have helped the Eagles?

Good thing that PhiladelphiaEagles announced that Reid wants the best player available, cause he means best player available out of the dregs that are left over.

How will this guy even get on the field. Why sign Feely to a LT deal? I am livid. Did they watch the same Defense I did???

Not really.

Pick 40 goes to a QB for Miami.
Pick 43 goes to a QB for Detroit.

Looking at both of those guys, I'm siding with Kolb. He seems more developed and a better fit for long term solutions at QB for them.

Why a QB? Well, that's an easy one. How many seasons has McNabb finished?

Believe me, they're not making this pick expecting him to be a starter or some sort of savior. This is pressure for McNabb to get his act together, and insurance if he gets hurt. Most teams expect a 1st rounder to sit on the bench at least for the first year, and Donnie's not getting any younger.

Hackett also mentioned that they could be interested in taking a 'special talent' if it was available at the QB position. When I read that, and then again when I saw the selection, I didn't know what was happening. Now, it kinda makes sense, if they really feel he'll be special. You can add in your "Joe Montana was taken in the 3rd round!" quotes now, but considering injuries, McNabb may be out of the league in a few years, and they're better off developing his long term replacement now then giving up when he injuries his toe/ankle/calf/throwing arm/throwing hand/knee/bicep/kidney/scrotum.

“I am looking to draft starters, not backups,” said Reid. “I am not looking to draft backups.” (from Philadelphiaeagles.com’s Dave Spadaro column Reid: Taking Best Player on Board, April 28)

If this is true, then what is Kevin Kolb? According to Scouts, Inc., Kolb was the 99th-best player available in the draft, rated 71 out of a possible 100. The Eagles took him as the 36th pick. Scouts paints a picture of a durable West-Coast-offense quarterback with some mobility. Hardly Donovan McNabb. McNabb is a superstar, always has been—rarely enough talent around him, expectations unreachably high, but at the end of the day he (with the help of Brian Dawkins and a good, sometime great, defense) has delivered value on your season-ticket or DirecTV Sunday Ticket dollar. This Kolb guy sounds like one of those Cal quarterbacks who rang up a lot of yards in the spread offense in college, but vanishes into obscurity and mediocrity at the NFL level. Moments after the Eagles made their pick, Mel Kiper himself said Kolb “reminds me of Kyle Boller.” Terrific.

So the Eagles blow a chance at Perdue DE Anthony Spencer, who many Big Ten tackles, including Top-Five pick Levi Brown, said was the hardest player they had had to defend. Essentially, Spencer could have erased from Philadelphia’s collective memory the disaster we all know as Jerome McDougle. Instead, the “Gold Standard” of front-office and coaching teams gift-wrap this impact player and send him to Dallas, where he will give the Eagles fits at least twice, maybe three times (and that third time will be fun, won’t it?) a year, because you can’t double-team Spencer AND DeMarcus Ware.

This was not the only manner in which the Eagles’ brass initiated the self-destruct sequence with the fan-base and the franchise today. They also passed on the opportunity to secure a long-term (and local favorite) answer at linebacker by missing out on Penn State’s Paul Posluzny. They also missed several true WR threats, including Tennessee’s Robert Meachum and Ohio State’s Anthony Gonzales. They surrendered the chance to improve any of a number of positions begging for attention: safety (by not having the awareness to trade up and beat New England to Brandon Meriweather), tight end (passed on Greg Olsen of Miami by trading down), linebacker (Posluzny, a high-character local guy who would have been especially easy to get signed and into camp on time)…I could go on and on. All that for a Kyle Boller clone.

Was the pressure too high? Has Reid’s spotty history in the first round paralyzed the franchise? No one wants another Freddie Mitchell or Jerome McDougle, and we’re pretty sure no one’s going to want another Broderick Bunkley, either. To quote MSNBC author Rob Maaddi in his article Eagles have mixed draft record under Reid, “Only McNabb, backup running back Correll Buckhalter and backup quarterback A.J. Feeley remain from Reid's first three drafts. If McDougle gets cut, tight end L.J. Smith will be the only player left from the 2003 draft.” Have these experiences left the Eagles’ brass afraid to make a play for someone worthy? Don't even get me started on the more recent drafts.

Granted, there have been times where the ivory tower folks have made the right call against the wishes of the masses. Donovan McNabb in 1999 goes without saying. In 2002, many wondered why the Eagles needed Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown and were proven clueless. The audacious move to get Shawn Andrews has proven fruitful, by luck or design. But every draft season since the Reid era began, the fans have been left scratching their heads for one reason and/or another. It seems the mantra of this particular organization to NEVER give the people what they want or expect.

It remains to be seen, of course, what the Eagles do with the remainder of their chances today. But what Eagles fans will remember most about this day, come the dreary days after their team is once again eliminated from Super Bowl contention, is that when they most wanted something to be proud of, most wanted a pick that would give them something to look forward to, the Eagles’ decision-makers failed them. Spectacularly.

"Special Talents" ??

This dude is the QB version of Ryan Moats--a guy who won't sniff the field for at least a few years, if that, who was drafted to "put pressure" on the real player.

If they wanted to "develop" a guy, take someone in the 5th round, not your first fucking pick in the draft.

I love how this team is so protective of their draft picks, and then when they do trade a pick, they waste it on a position that is no better than 5th on their list of needs. Why re-sign Feeley? It doesn't make sense on any level unless they think that McNabb is done, and if that is the case, than Kolb, Quinn, Russell or any other guy ain't gonna make a difference right now b/c Feeley would be the starter anyway.

This does not make sense. I am so pissed off at this team.

I'm wondering if Kolb wasn't some sort of FG holder or something? Does he have a neckbeard? I JUST DON'T GET IT! Of all the positions that the Eagles needed to draft for depth, I think QB was only ahead of the P, maybe PK, and Swoop.

If you are going to waste a 2nd round pick, why not waste the 57 as opposed to the one just 4 picks in?

Um, guys?

McCaulley, Wright and Wilson are still on the board, all of them talented DB's. Rouse is still a top 50 pick, and a good option at SS. That's 4 selections that can still come up at 57.

With the exception of a possible superstar camp, it's likely Brown and Lito will retain the corner starting positions, with Dawk at FS. SS is up for grabs, but Considine did start last year, and Griffen (who went at 19 to Tenn.) was the only Strong Safety that really seemed like he could come out and start.

I'm not really seeing anyone where they were at who could challenge to be a starter out of camp. Houston's played how many games in the last few years? Weddle is more of a FS then a SS, and doesn't really have the speed to be a cover corner, which means he couldn't really hold up as a corner in the 46.

I'm just coming from the point of view that the Eagles could have drafted Klob much later. And if he wasn't there in the 5th round or later...meh. This kid could turn out to be really good, but the Eagles have decent depth at the QB position right now (at least on paper), and I would have ranked a big RB, secondary help, and depth on both lines as being more important. I would have even had LB higher than QB, except for the fact that the Eagles seem to have such a hard time evaluating them.

Aks, how do you figure? Henry's expected to be a top 100 pick, but with several backs gone, the Titans need more depth. Unless they picked up someone else, they only have 2 runningbacks they drafted last year.

You're missing the point. 2 teams drafted at 40 and 43 for Kolb. He would have been gone 4 picks later. If he's their 'special' guy, then they drafted him right on.

Maybe Boller 2.0 will be like 1.0. We don't really know that right now. But from what I'm reading on Kolb, the only knock on him is that he needs to develop with time in an NFL scheme. With Donnie in front of him, he'll have that time.

I live in Tucson, and saw Henry for his entire "career". His first season he had somewhere around 25 carries and fumbled 5 times. Last season (when the Wildcats were HURTING for anyone to contribute at RB), he was benched for disciplinary issues. He also had several run-ins with the local law. He's not even close to being in the same class as Lendale White, which should say all anyone needs to know about him.

I see your point Lyte, but I just haven't ever even heard of the guy which makes me wonder about his "specialness". Reid has pulled this kind of thing before (obviously) and left several pundits (including myself) looking stupid for doubting him. I hope this is the case, but I refuse to pass judgement until I hear about Kolb's bubble...

Looking on the board however, I think St. Louis probably drafted whom they should have taken instead. In a way, I'm glad Leonard is off the boards so the Eagles don't get tempted to take him and go after that depth at DB. Rouse would be nice at this point. And I still think Wright and Wilson look pretty decent for nickle coverage, at least this upcoming season.

That is strange in regards to the Raiders. IMO, they should not even consider any sort of trade that doesn't involve the acquisition of a veteran OL. Granted Williams and McCown might just be camp bodies, but Oakland seems to have one glaring need that they haven't addressed as of yet. (Ryan Kalil even? although rookie OL usually don't fare too well without some good veteran help along side them)
