You stayed sober?

For this?

This is a prime example of what happens when Reid is left to his own devices to draft "the best player" available. I'm trying to convince myself that this will turn out OK, but I just don't understand any of it until the Hunt pick.

Another QB?!? A DE with injury concerns?!? A strong side LB with a history of 2 knee surgeries already?!?

I'm utterly stunned. I had to leave the house after waiting (even longer after the trade with Dallas) to hear the words: "With the 36th pick in the draft the Philadelphia Eagles select QB (did I hear QB or CB?) Kevin Kolb from Houston..." (...Kevin Kolb?!? Who the hell is Kevin Kolb?!?)

There is one conclusion that can be drawn from today: remaining competitive in the long term is clearly goal no 1 for this team - NOT shooting for a Super Bowl. I suppose the problem is that there is some validity to that approach business-wise.

You can also draw the following conclusions:

Grading any draft halfway through is not fair, but fans want to see some effort made on the improvement of their teams. Therefore the draft day bloggers have the enviable job of telling everyone that their "team did great!" and got a "sure-fire pro-bowler!" as a "draft day steal!".

The occurance of the word "bubble" in draft analysis is gradually being overshadowed by the term "room on his frame to add at least another 10 pounds of bulk …"

The Redskins scouting department has a cushy job. They've had to prepare to draft like 3 players in the Snyder era.

In all seriousness, the only way half of this day makes sense is if they found something about Kolb from scouting that made them feel that he's a steal. Quinn and Russell both come from larger schools with much more media recognition. Most of the writups say he has good ability, but needs to learn a pro system.

Enter the Eagles, who have a star QB with injury concerns, and a few backup QB's that have questionable ability (and couldn't be considered starters anywhere in the league). Philly knows they need to start worrying about what happens when McNabb goes down, so they sign a person who knows the system (Feeley) and aquire another guy in case they need a 3rd stringer and can't get Kolb in the draft.

They sign Kolb to an incentive ladden deal that they don't plan on excersising much of unless there are injuries that force him to play. This deal spreads out for say 5-6 years, with incentives throughout, so if he comes in and starts, he can be paid much more than a normal 2nd stringer. They plan for about 2-3 years to utilize their star player, and use the competant (I can't call him anything other than that because he's barely serviceable as a starter) backup in case the star gets hurt. As the young QB sits in the wings, he learns the system and becomes what McNabb was able to do after 3 years learning the system.

3 years down the line, they decide if McNabb has the health to continue, or if they need to move on with their prospect. If McNabb's health remains eratic as it has, they unload him or release his huge contract, which will be overvalued in favor of the player, and start the coached QB. Around that time, they restructure his deal to be a normal starting QB's salery.

Apparently, to the FO's concern, QB is a major element of this offense. McNabb has played in 60 regular season games in the last 5 years (75%). Some of them he has played injured. He has missed significant Playoff time, which has cost the team several times in the last few years. Considering that Quarterback is the cornerstone in the West Coast Offense, they realized that McNabb cannot operate with bandaids in the wings to cover him, they have decided to come up and grab someone else before he physically falls appart.

What happens if in 2 years, McNabb decides he's tired of getting hurt, and wants to broadcast? Who QB's then? The Eagles are making the decision to move forward with a QB who may or may not be their future starter. He doesn't have to beat the world. Remember, the QB's who have excelled in the WCO are usually NOT first round draft selections (read: Montana, Young, Favre). McNabb had many physical tools which took several years to hone to work in the system. Given time, Kolb could develop similarly.

In regards to the DE and the OLB, I don't think there's enough pot/booze in the world to feed someone that will make them make sense. I like the RB selection, but frankly I think they could have stayed at 26, gotten a better rusher (that ended up going to Dallas of all places), and then tried to move up to get Kolb. While the other two did come off the board right after him, they may have fallen to the 3rd round if they didn't take him at 36, but we'll never really know.

Andy Reid on NFL channel.

This is the first year we were in a position to take the best player on the board, and the best player was QB.

And..We had some players in mind that got picked up before us (which kind of implies that the prediction of Eagles eyeing Meriweather who got took by Patriots was maybe right)

Add it up and the Eagles just weren't prepared to have no one on their board available, and weren't prepared to be picking at 36 either. (So their best player was a QB).

They messed up.

And when Andy was asked how they deal with 4 QB's on their roster he basically said "we'll see" and then rattled off the strengths of each one of them.

I think Reid must have had some sort of "chads" system which confused him and his draft staff. They weren't in alphabetical order, the names got smudged when the draft sheet was placed under Reid's cheesesteak, he ran outta gas, he had a flat tire, he didn't have enough money for cab fare, his tux didn't come back from the cleaners, an old friend came in from outta town, someone stole his car. There was an earthquake, a terrible flood, locust's.

Unless Kolb is a lock to join neckbeard in the Holder's wing at Canton, what possible good can come out of this pick?

"Cue the homers to sell me... "

this wont be a total sell, maybe just a little. after my 14 hr work day, riding home at 11:15pm, listening to the IP crossover with GCobb leaving the air. he said that leaving Kolb out of it, the eagles couldnt have done much better with the other 3 picks than what they did.

he likes Hunt, the OLB and the DE had 10 1/2 sacks i believe in '06. needless to say, he's a bit confused with the Kolb pick, but did say that the one thing reid seems to know is QB's. hopefully, we can give this kid the 3yrs he needs to develop.

btw, he cant go on the practice squad because someone would pluck him off of it, so either he gets a convenient injury or is the # 3 and holcomb was just a place for the bills to dump some salary to even out the trade

and to whoever texted me the kolb pick, ( think it was the guy in shorts ).... thank you, i think.

(I like the Hunt pick) but Reid and Co. just managed to strengthen the Cowboys and weaken the Eagles in one fell swoop. As I've been saying for years....It's NEVER gonna happen under this regime. N.E.V.E.R!

One of two things happened.

1. It's the QB equivalent of the 2002 draft, with outrage over what turned out to be a smart re-stocking of the DB roster, in spite of Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent being here.

1. Andy Reid will need Jake's excuse in the Blues Brothers: I ran out of gas. I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! It wasn't my fault, I swear to god!

Let's hope for #1.

There is no depth at safety and cornerback. Mikell is the back-up at 2 safety positions and there is no third string. The cornerbacks have justin as the third string, and James is one of the backup's at second.

I don't get how they didn't think they don't need a cornerback or safety or safety that can play cornerback.

OK I'm here... I actually love the pick. I think it was the right call, McNabb has an easy 2-4 very good year left(if he stays healthy maybe more)BUT that is the fact #5 is a very smart guy and once IMO if he keeps getting hurt every other year he will walk away from football while his knees are still good...

This way Kolb will have 2 years of learning with NO PRESSURE to play AND AJ will be the back up this year and maybe have to compete with Kolb for the #2 position on 08...

So if you think about it like that then in 2-5 years The Eagles can/will have McNabb's replacement ready when they cut him loose PLUS knowing the Eagles as we do you know they will have him signed for 5-8 years on the cheap side...

Just relistened to parts of the draft, Kolb played in a shotgun-spread offense, but it is a WC style Offense.

Dont like the QB pick- not against a QB, or HIM nesecarily, but could have EASILY gotten him WAY LATER methinks.

Like the Hunt pick,a lot actually. Still have some concerns as to how well he'll transition into the NFL, but this is the TYPE of back we've all wanted for yrs.

I think as some said here- they were not expecting some of their guys to be taken out from under em.

Miami was going to take him with their next pick. I still don't like the pick, but at least there was interest from other teams.

If McNabb was a few years older, I'd understand better. This just doesn't make sense to me.

Bush just went to Oakland

I agree w/ that KB, and apparently he is considered the 2nd best QB by many services-its the timing of this pick that is questionable.

McNabb is not close enuff to the end of his road, I wouldnt think, to draft his replacement.
