I did not like this psick at all...initially. Now, it doesn't look too bad.
#1- They need to start grooming a West Coast-efficient QB ASAP. These guys don't come along often- and can't be found after Rd 3.
#2- Kolb was soaring on scouting boards, and as stated, Kolb was believed to be gone by mid-round 2.
#3- Some scouts had him rated ahead of Quinn in the last few days.
It was a need pick for the future. Too bad we couldn't snag a DB earlier though... I do love the Hunt pick!

Patrick wouldn't be a bad pick. They would probably have to trade up to get him...

"McNabb is not close enuff to the end of his road, I wouldnt think, to draft his replacement. "
thats the biggest worry out of all this.
as much as we all complain about # 5, he's pretty damn good and there's no guarantee AJ, or Kolb or any other schmoe will ever be as good. my fear is that the team knows his next major injury will be his last, or that he will not play any more than 2-3 more yrs.
now, on the bright side, apparently the offense at U of Houston ran some of the same type of schemes that the eagles do, trying to create match-up problems by putting backs and TE's out in space against slower cover guys. Kolb was quoted in the paper this morning saying he didnt feel that part of the learning curve would take him that long to grasp.
and one other thing i read, an accurate passer is supposed to be one of his strengths as a QB, which is the one complaint most of us have about mcnabb.
no matter who else was available at the time, if in 4-5 yrs, this guy is the starting QB and doing well, it was a good pick. my concern is that it will be sooner.

and i laugh at the guys who come on here or the radio and say things like, this draft stinks, they didnt get anyone good, I would have taken this other guy cause he's gonna be a star.
pro-teams, all 32 of them spend millions on scouting college prospects, and dont hit on anywhere near 50% of their picks, and when they do, sometimes its just pure luck.
those of us average fans, me included, when it comes right down to it, dont know whether Hunt, Kolb, or Spencer, or the alphabet soup DE are gonna be better than brian leonard, or merriweather, or any other guy taken from the first overall pick, down to the end of the 7th round.

Agreed, Im hopin for Patrick, but without a 4th rounder, they're goin to have to moss someone to obtain a 4th this yr perhaps.
I dunno. I could see that happening.

Ok....so I'm as pissed and confused as everyone else by the QB and DE picks, but I do like the LB and Tony Hunt pick.
On a side note, I would love to have been the fly on the wall at the old McNabb house when the Kolb pick came out. You just know he ran in his room crying while his mother ran after him.

EEB,
It isn't that we (or even scouting personnel) know who is going to be a star. It just that the logic eludes me. If you are drafting for need it makes overall little sense. If you are drafting for depth, it makes less sense. If you are drafting by best player still on the board it makes ZERO sense. Of course, there is the owner who fancies himself a personnel "guru" or the head coach who is also in charge of personnel who choose head scratchers.
The ONLY way this makes good sense is that McNabb has a significant health concern that either won't be overcome or is pushing retirement up faster for him.
Otherwise, for all the reasons teams do draft, it makes no sense.

"So if you think about it like that then in 2-5 years The Eagles can/will have McNabb's replacement ready when they cut him loose PLUS knowing the Eagles as we do you know they will have him signed for 5-8 years on the cheap side... "
So the Eagles are thinking in terms of "2-5 years" from now, while a team like New England(who has multiple rings mind you) is making moves for the right here and right now.
Who's method of doing things do you lean towards?? Hmmmmm tough one there........
gotta love that Kolb pick though. (yeah right.)

So, the Patriots get Moss AND Stallworth. Does anyone think that tandem could be covered?
Everyone has been repeatedly critical of Snyder and with good reason. But looking for players that offer significant enhancement of your existing system rather than getting players you like (ala Snyder) really makes perfect sense. Too bad Reid, Banner and the Gold Standard couldn't see that.

I have no doubt Andy is able to pick the most-likely-to-succeed QB's. I can rest easy trusting that Kolb was the best QB on the board if Andy says he was. (Andy coached Favre and picked McNabb.) The trouble with this is the lingering question, how does it help the Eagles now? Is *possibly* needing him in the future worth the pick, above and beyond any of the defensive help/depth the Eagles could have gotten at that point in the draft? Unless the Eagles actually do need to turn to Kolb in the near future, we may never know the answer to that question.
The really stinging part of this equation is that the Eagles gave Dallas the opportunity to significantly bolster their defense (something we wouldn't have minded the Eagles doing) for a mere insurance policy at QB.

159 overall they select CJ Gaddis, FS from Clemson.
Somehow, I doubt that this will work out as well as the last time the Eagles drafted a FS from Clemson.

from the last line of the Kolb's review at
"Self-starter who has been a great program player and unquestioned leader ever since first stepping into the huddle as a freshman … Vocal leader, but not the type who appears arrogant, like some quarterbacks tend to be."

Another somewhat wacky draft day for the Eagles.
I could see people asking WTF on the QB pick in the first round but those same people more than likely said WTF when they drafted Brown and Lito.
I really don't have a problem with them drafting a QB and the fact that they did might mean there is more going on with #5 than we really know. Not to mention he has been hurt alot.
So I'm not really going to question what they did and just hope the players they drafted can produce and contribute to the team next year and in the future.

I actually like their corner/safety hybrid picks. Gaddis more than Barksdale as there is moer info on him. However, the players' versatility shows some talent the Eagles should be able to groom into their needs. Maybe I'm being optimistic. In any event, neither of them lack height - that's a plus. I think they were good picks for the late rounds.

Nate Ilaoa
Height: 5-8
Weight: 248
Fullback
"Known as "Nasti" by his teammates, Ilaoa's (pronounced ee-LAW-wuh) physical running style and ability to perform as a capable short-area receiver could see him shift to fullback at the pro level. Many scouts liken his low center of gravity and pad level to that of Emmitt Smith. Despite his "cannonball" physique, he has excellent cutback ability and change-of-direction agility."
I like it. He's a keg with legs!
