By CHRIS McPHERSON
Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said on Sunday that second-year linebacker Chris Gocong is currently No. 1 on the depth chart on the strongside. On Monday, the Eagles released veteran linebacker Dhani Jones.
Jones, originally a sixth-round pick of the Giants in 2000, was signed by the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent in 2004 and started in 47 regular season games over the past three seasons. In his three-year stint, Jones had 288 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. But the Eagles wanted more production from the position, so they drafted Gocong out of Cal-Poly in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Good bye Dhani. Our time together was far too long.

I can't help but wonder about the timing of the release. Did they really have to wait to see if they were going to get a linebacker in the draft to let Dhani Jones go? What was the advantage of holding on to him till just after the draft? And if you hold onto him till after the draft, why wouldn't you hold till the beginning of the season to let him go?

I heard they were trying to get an 8th rounder for him at the draft.

Ox my guess is that they probably tried trading him, but everyone they called wanted the Eagles 1st and 3rd to take him so Reid decided it was a little cheaper to just cut him...
