To hear him tell it, anyway:
(From the Eckel-less Eagles Beat @ the Trenton Times)

"When I was talking to a specialist, what he said to me was a tear-jerker," Andrews said. "And it's kind of tough because it's something I love to do, and I can't really be out there (with) my teammates right now. I don't know what the future holds, but I'll be OK either way."

This is quite a shocking statement from someone who's not sup posed to talk about injuries. An drews probably realized it even be fore he finished the last sentence, because he refused to go further than that, refused to defuse the bombshell he just dropped.

"I can't release (what the doctor said)," Andrews said. "Coach Reid would probably spank me if I said that. So I'm going to leave that alone."

Asked if he might need surgery on the same leg that was repaired following an opening-day fibula fracture in 2004, Andrews replied: "Again, I don't know. I don't want to get a spanking from Coach Reid, so you'll just have to ask him and maybe he'll inform you on that."

For what it's worth, Andrews was saying everything with a smile in the locker room, like he was trying to have a little fun with everyone. But nobody in the media horde surrounding him came away with a true sense of just how close he may be to getting back on the field this season, if at all.

"I don't know what to think right now," Andrews said. "I'm just rehabbing, trying to rest it, stay off of it, keep my weight down, stay fo cused and trying to get back."

To see Andrews face on the news and the tone in his voice I don't think this is a good sign. Last year the o line was the best unit on the team due in part to the line playing all 16 together. Hopefully he will be back at some time this year or Scott Young and his mohawk will have to step up.

Does this become a recurring issue, where it's not fully healed due to his size?

I'm not sure when the Eagles are going to come to the realization that they should just trade away all their first round picks because they never get anything from them.

There was a rumor flying around yesterday afternoon that his injury is career threatening. I didn't pay it much mind at the time, but after reading that I'm not feeling too good about it.

Andrews is easily the best player on that line and it would be a massive loss if he's done for the year or longer.

What fuckin' luck. You think you have the next Larry Allen and at 23 or 24 years old, his career is threatened by a broken bone 2 years ago.

Its a loss, NO QUESTION, not implying it isn't-

BUT, of all spots on the roster where they seem, SEEM, to be able to absorb a season ending loss a tad better than others, OL is it.
Across the board- From Tackle to Tackle, they're deeper than in anytime in the past 30 yrs.

Its goin to SUCK, and Im not drinkin Kool-Aid, just shining a light on the fact it isnt as if Westbrook, McNabb, Dawk or another high profile guy with little depth behind him, went down.

You can't say that losing a guard is the end of the world, but you're talking about losing your best lineman, too. I mean, Andrews is a guy who will chew up a TD in the playoffs and Scott Young is a guy who is a solid backup, but could get dominated by an elite DT.

It just sucks...

Not to mention that limits what you can do on the ground towards the right.

They'll be fine, but if his career is really in jeopardy, that sucks, since he had a chance to make people forget all about Antoine Davis.

From Bob Brookover's article:

Despite Andrews' vagueness and obvious concern about his status, a team source said yesterday that he expected the Pro Bowl guard to be ready for the season opener. The same source said he believed that tight end L.J. Smith, safety Brian Dawkins, and cornerback Lito Sheppard would be in the starting lineup on opening day.

Perhaps there is hope after all, although considering this came from a team source, it's probably just delusional thinking.

Apparently Reid was on WIP this morning and said Andrews' season is NOT in danger.

Could this be any more confusing?

He said everyone who is out right now (other than McDougle and Moats) is on track to be ready for the opener.

Do any of you think, McNabb had anything to do with this?

I can't understand what, "career threatening" injury he could have sustained to his ankle. High ankle sprain? Nope. Maybe a trimalleolar fracture or a Lis franc cuz he's a big guy (really midfoot not ankle).

Osteochondral defect? If it is unstable, then yes. But you can't know it is or isn't unstable if it is acute.

I'm going with non-career threatening, unless he has some weird glycogen storage disorder (no that doesn't include being obese or water weight from twinki consumption) or some mixed connective tissue disorder.

Dr. Jules, I read something about spreading of the joint/arthritis/calcification??/whatever. Something to the effect that he could play with it but it might have serious reprcussions long term. Does that make any sense? Could it be he was told you can play football but you might need a walker when your 40? (and unlike most football players he didn't immediately say I don't care just get me ready for Sunday)

Do any of you think, McNabb had anything to do with this?

Obviously!

Regarding the injury being career threatening, maybe it was something more along the lines of the doctor telling him "you may walk with a cane the rest of your life after football is over" or something like that (as mentioned above).

In terms of what the injury could be...I have no clue. I can only assume that a guy who weighs 335 lbs. when he's in tip-top shape might be at risk with foot/ankle injuries.

For old injuries, you can have calcific tendonopathy which would compromise range of motion and would hurt frequently.

People who have old fractures are at risk for early arthritis and this would only worsen rapidly for an athelete that would push his body as much as he does. The worst that would happen would be that over time it would alter his weight bearing and cause him to accelerate any degenerative changse in other weight bearing joints (eg knee, hip or contralateral knee or hip).

G Cobb says on his blog that Reids right, Andrews will be ready, and that S.Andrews has a rep for likin to get people's reactions etc, and that he may have been pullin one over on the local press.

If so, sorry, but thats effin hilarious.
Id love it.

Um, G Cobb also had this to say in the same blog entry, so, take all above w/ a grain of salt:

"Once Donovan starts playing, a lot of the media will start going into a different phase.
I advise you to hold your breath as sinister plots start being hatched in the print and electronic media."

Does G Cobb wear a Tinfoil hat?

Gcobb now reverse field:

Shawn Andrews' Season Is In Doubt.

Written by Garry Cobb
Friday, 17 August 2007
I just learned from a source with the Eagles that the 2007 season of Shawn Andrews is in doubt. The doctors, the Eagles and Shawn really don't know whether he's going to be able to return to action this year.

Big Shawn was being truthful the other day when he talked about his visit to the doctor's office. “When the doctor said what he said to me about different situations, it was a tearjerker,” Andrews said. “Sometimes things happen when you have a 300-pound body on a leg that's been broken. It's tough. ... Pain's not the issue. It's out of my hands. It's out of my doctor's hands.”

There's still a chance that he could return to action but the Eagles, the doctor and Big Shawn have no surety that he will return this year. Andy was telling the truth when he said that Andrews is a very emotional player. He is. But he was also being honest the other day when he said, “I don't know what the future holds. Time will tell. No one knows. It's out of my hands. I just have to keep praying, keep working and keep grinding.”

Shawn said the doctor told him that this situation is different from the other time when he broke it.
“I knew I'd be back in nine or 10 months. Sometimes when something happens the second time, it's not always as good.”

I know Andy is not going to like the fact that this information is out but what can you do. This is not a slight against anybody. We all hope Shawn returns to action.
Shawn finished the other night by saying, “Just pray for me if you care about me."

I'm praying for you kid.
