Just heard it myself and wasn't sure if it was true.

Weird.

Gaither was working with the 1's yesterday and I'm guessing he demanded to be released rather than play as a backup.

Word is there is a joint press conference scheduled for this afternoon. If that's the case, I can't imagine this is anything other than a retirement announcement.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

This site in slipping.

Trotter's release was anounced around 0930 and wasn't posted on here until 1005.

For shame.

My sources tell me he was asked by management if he wanted to retire and he said no.

Either he has changed his mind or he wants to play another year.

So long and good luck.

So now at LB they have Spikes, a guy who hasn't played MLB, a guy who's never played a regular season game in the NFL, a rookie and a second round bust backing them up. Could be a nice surprise or an all-out dreadful unit.

This really smells of front office arrogance again. Worst case, Trot is a decent backup, even if you think his best stuff is behind him.

I think that's just speculation. I can't imagine they'd make that move considering Gaither's been playing exclusively in the middle this year and spikes has been working exclusively on the weak side.

Ive been RUNTIMIN it for hours out here, tryin to get in to comment.

DOUBT Spikes moves over. HIGHLY Doubt that.

The Press conf. should be interesting.

And G Cobb is in his glory, having "forseen" this a couple wks ago (The article of his I posted out here where he felt they Birds were tryin to wear Trotter out in camp so they could cut him?)

Here is his latest:

Tuesday, 21 August 2007
I had heard last year during the off season from a source that the Eagles were leaning toward replacing Jeremiah Trotter. They didn't decide to cut him last year they decided to move him from a civilian court to a military court.
When the coaches move you to the military court, you are going to be treated like a "free agent". Free agents unlike draft choices have to prove immediately that they're worthy of making the team while draft choices have some time to prove themselves. If a free agent stumbles at all, then they cut them. This is the situation Trotter was coming into this season.
In a civilian court, you are innocent until proven guilty. In a military court, you are guilty until proven innocent. I could tell by the way they were treating him in the camp. As I said previously, they gave Trot one practice off during the training camp. This said it all to me. That meant he had to prove to Jim Johnson and the defensive coaches that he could still do the job. He wasn't going to get the benefit of the doubt.

Why has the media been saying Trotter looked good in camp?

I didn't get to see him in either preseason game-- did he really look like toast?

I honestly didn't hear or read of Trotter looking good or bad. I heard he looked slimmer and that's about it.

I didn't see much good or bad from him in the games either. I just didn't notice him.

The only thing I can assume is he's shot. With that said, they are essentially saying he lost out to Tank Daniels for a roster spot if they are cutting him (in my mind).

If he gets beat out by Gaither, I'd still keep him as a backup and short yardage/goal line backer. If he gets beat out by Gaither and Bradley, you're looking at who is going to make the roster between McCoy, Trotter, and Daniels. If Trot's knees were shot to the point where he was being considered the 3rd string middle backer and couldn't take the pounding of playing special teams (or wouldn't accept the role of playing special teams this time around), they had to make a call.

Definitely a surprising move, because Gaither (up until the Panthers game) wasn't being praised for his play at all.

Remembering Trotter As A Key Part Of The Eagles

In the cold, hard business of the NFL, days like these are very difficult to accept. That the Eagles released linebacker Jeremiah Trotter on Tuesday is reality. We applaud Trotter for his time as an Eagle, as a warrior, for the emotional tremors he sent through the defense during his time here.

There is nothing but praise for Trotter here. The organization loves him and, truly, there is sorrow from one side of the NovaCare Complex to the other. The news is shocking to most people, and for the fans who have adored Trotter all of these years, I know how painful this must be.

But for Andy Reid, and for Jim Johnson and for the organization as a whole, the decision was made to move forward with younger, faster legs. Omar Gaither and Stewart Bradley step up now. It is their responsibility to play middle linebacker with the same tenacity and aggressiveness that Trotter brought to the table in his two stints with the Eagles.

We will look forward to charting the progress of Gaither and Bradley at a later time. Now is time to remember Trotter for what he meant to the Eagles on and off the field. He arrived in Philadelphia as a raw kid in 1998. I remember sitting in the office of head coach Ray Rhodes at Veterans Stadium at the time and as he talked about the draft with scouts and fellow coaches, Trotter’s name was the topic of conversation.

“Wait until (center Steve) Everitt gets a look at him,” snorted Rhodes. “That kid is going to knock the snot out of Everitt. You’re going to see a 260-pound load of bricks coming down the ‘A’ gap!”

That Rhodes and defensive coordinator Emmitt Thomas didn’t play Trotter as a rookie was mystifying, but the young man certainly made his mark the next year with Reid as the new head coach. Trotter started, starred and became the center piece of a defense that would lead the Eagles out of the NFL’s dungeon. He was ferocious, precocious and a furious man who played “downhill” as well as any linebacker the Eagles have had in the modern day.

Trotter made four Pro Bowls as an Eagle and, even more important, he grew deep roots in the Philadelphia region. The fans love him. He loves them. Trotter is a well-established businessman here and is likely to stay in the area, having just built his dream home in South Jersey.

At this best, Trotter was a force of nature on the field. He overcame serious knee injuries suffered early in his career to make himself the “Axeman” and earn acclaim across the league as one of the best in the game.

The Eagles made a decision here that they think is best: It became more and more difficult for Trotter to cover ground. Teams were having success running the stretch play at the Eagles and forcing Trotter to run sideline to sideline to stop the run. Crossing routes became big plays in the last year against this defense as quarterbacks looked to gash the Eagles in the middle of the field.

Gaither took the reps with the first-team defense on Monday and not many watching noticed. Trotter stayed at the NovaCare Complex long after practice and met with his coaches one last time late in the afternoon. He made the lonely walk to his car, parked in the front row of the lot.

He turned the key and drove away for a final time as an Eagle. On Tuesday morning, reality set in.

Nobody can ever forget what Trotter means to this franchise. He is part of the legacy, part of the rise to excellence. That is what we remember on this day, a day that is difficult for everyone to accept without some tears and heavy hearts.

Spuds probably is on his second box of tissues by now.

Watching the press conference, Trot may get another job and give it another go, but he sounded like a man who knew it was over.

They have brought out Trot and followed him with spikes and Dawk so they could share their "memories" of Trot... if you couldn't hear the questions, you'd assume Trot dies in a car accident last night.

Trot kept it together, but had to take a minute to compose himself during his response to the question "Could you feel, out on the practice field, that the younger linebackers were outplaying you?"

His answer started out with "Well, that's not my decision to make..." but he got got choked up and had to stop before continuing. It seemed like he knew he couldn't cover the ground and physically make the plays he knew he needed to make and made in his prime.

Very sad.

Another question that was asked was whether or not Trot would consider taking a role within the organization like Hugh did if he's unable to find a job and Trot responded "I'm just trying to get through the next 5 minutes and the 5 minutes after that right now."

Seriously, there was no use for Trot... or little use for him? I read that he wasn't going to be used much for passing... but can' you trust him to stuff up runs through the box? or are the Eagles getting beat around the enemy OTs?

This is only the second big "wha?" from the Eagles this year, the first bring their 1st draft pick. Usually the Eagles have a string of shockers...

Wow. Maybe the 700level.com site can have a black background for 7 days after Dawk leaves the team. You know that's soon.

It's a sad day, but I guess it was gonna happen eventually. I just thought Trot would fade away after this year once JJ and Reid felt that Omar was totally up to the task...

Still one of my favorite all time Eagles

Thanks and good luck Trot...
