These guys are so used to playing it close to the vest that when a situation happens where there's no secrecy involved, they still act as-if.
I dunno - for a team that acts as if it doesn't care what the fans think as far as personnel, they sure do like to keep people "guessing". In this case, the only "guessing" that will happen is how far Mahe will run before he falls down.

I don't understand what makes Mahe a better option than Bloom. Wouldn't Bloom be cheaper too?
Eh.

Mahe knows the system, which feeds into Reid's fetish of guys not being there to do one thing.

As pointed out in the link, Bloom would cost about $150K less, since Reno would have to be paid the 5-year vet minimum if he's signed. They have to go against one of their two hallmarks: knowing the system, or being salary cap champs.
And since we're putting in quotes from the Inky, here's my fav of the day from Phil:
"Third, and this is the source of real concern, these kinds of performances are coming too frequently to be discounted as mere happenstance. The foggy, uninspired performance against a beatable team is as much a hallmark of the Reid/Donovan McNabb era as the time-out called just before the play clock hits zero."

I said before many times a coach who doesn't curse is doomed! What kind of malarkey is that?!?

BTW, I think that Reno become eligible for an NFL pension if he plays this year.
Considering it's Reid's religious belief that Reno's people are descendants of God's chosen ones, I believe this is clearly a move aimed at increasing FB's chances when the Lord calls him.

That's actually the only reason I thought he'd get re-signed.

Bush and Reid must be related. That's a very valid point about the secrecy. WTF? Why so straight laced and quiet and walk the line. Fuck That. I get sick of that shit.
The fans deserve better.

So you nitwits think Reid
1. cut Mahe loose in the offseason
2. knew Bloom wouldn't make it
3. put in an ill prepared for the job Greg Lewis who would screw up
so he could bring back Mahe to get a pension and secure his own place in heaven
Yeah that must be what he planned all along.
Or Hoffman from the Daily News had it right all along "arrogance" Reid's biggest flaw, from his insistence on passing 60% or more all those years, to running out a shitload of mediocore or worse receivers that he was gonna coach up or scheme them to stardom to this latest fiasco and I also agree 100% with either Smallwood or Hoffman's (can't remember which) assertion that for the short term the best solution is to bring Bloom back. He may fall down after a strong wind passes him by but he catches every punt, fair catches when necesary and cuts off the short punt before it rolls into a 50 yarder. If a situation comes up where they need a big play every 2nd or 3rd game Westbrook can be put back there for that.

It almost pains me to say it, but if Mahe is on the field ONLY as a return man, and not a RB, he might work out to be of average value. And average blows the doors off this trainwreck of a situation.
Stutter step, Stutter step, run 5 yards, fall down with the ball.
Another nugget for ya, from Yahoo:
Sep 11 Tim Panaccio, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said he will consider using RB Brian Westbrook as the team's primary punt returner.

Clincher:
Mahe, who was living in Utah prior to his signing, jumped on a flight to Philadelphia early Tuesday morning and worked out for team personnel.

To make room for Mahe, they released J.R. Reed.
Tell you the truth, I'd rather see them give J.R. Reed another chance. That's got to really hurt to know your chance back gets blown when you are thrown into the game to cover for someone else who messed up. The least they could do was release Greg Lewis as being more to blame since he gave up more points and had more chances.

All I have to say is that Bethel Johnson better have sucked REAL bad if Reid thought G-Lew, Mahe, and Reed were better options.

Johnson got cut from the Texans, which is akin to being DFA by the Devil Rays, so yeah.

I thought the exact same thing.
Mahe's arrival spells a wasted year for Hunt. That's the shittiest part of this signing.
The good news is that Fat McCoy will continue to dress while Hunt will sit. That's a huge sigh of relief.
Is there another team in the NFL that routinely waives the same player, a player that every team in the league laughs at and would never consider for their roster, only to sign the same guy year after year? Mahe is so bad that even Childress isn't interested.
It really sucks that Reed was cut because of Lewis' ineptitude. Reed's kickoffs weren't bad. They weren't special, either, but at least he was getting the ball close to the 30 when he had a chance.

Hunt's deactivated, Mahe returns, Lewis is still on the team while the player we all rooted for to return gets cut...what a way to start the year.
Lewis should've been cut for his clueless comments. Of course, I think he should've been cut because he's Greg Lewis, but whatever.

I'll splash this thread with a revelation I've just had:
Im ready for a new regime. From top to bottom.
Knowing the Gold Standard in ownership won't go, Im not going to complain when FB's season ends shy of a Lombardi and he sites health, family issues as the reason he's not staying.
New coach, clean house of assistants and Heckert, and build around the young QB who shows some promise, as well as what I think is a good situation to inherit considering how devoid of talent most teams are that are left to new coaches.
My issue has some to do with personel, more to do with philosophy of this regime and their universal arrogance/stubborness.
Didnt see that coming in a thread about return men did ya?
Consider it the Level's 1st Easter Egg.

Seth, I've actually been having the same thoughts. The team is aging and there's going to be a bloodletting of veterans over the next few years and a whole host of young kids to replace them. It might be the perfect time to bring in a fresh coach with fresh ideas.

Some people would argue that you'll never find a coach as good as Reid. That it'll be back to the 3-13 days of yesteryear, with the "raping of families" halftime speeches. Some would argue even further that Reid is in a class similar to Bill Cowher, and it took him a long time to finally win a title.
It's rare you see coaches last in the NFL as long as Reid - the only ones that have lasted longer have won SBs, right? Belichek and Shanahan.
I'll agree that a lot of things are getting old with no signs of improvement - the argument over playcalling, timeouts squandered, a defense that's been figured out, a QB who were all waiting to get hurt and miss another season, the arrogance of having a team where some members wouldn't make NFL Europa, etc. I can see why you feel that way and are ready for a change. If anything, you'd think a change was coming anyway due to Reid's family concerns and the stress of the job.
