Well, the Eagles will sign someone before next week. Reno is supposedly in Philly today meeting with the team, so that could be the direction they'll go.

From PFW.com on Friday

Philadelphia
Sept. 7, 2007

Special teams remain watch area for Eagles

The Eagles could have gone the safe route. They had an incumbent punter, Dirk Johnson, and said nice things most of the summer about their combo return man, Jeremy Bloom, who essentially was coming off a medical redshirt year as a rookie. Instead, the team turned the tables, going with strong-legged (and huge) P Sav Rocca, who has yet to make a punt of substance in the NFL, and ditching Bloom amid their late cuts. Back as the primary kick returner is old friend J.R. Reed, who was cut by the Eagles last season and re-signed late in the preseason, and Greg Lewis will handle punt returns for now. Lewis had never taken punt-return duty before going back there in the third preseason game against the Steelers. At the time, Lewis felt good about his chances. “It felt fine,” he told PFW after the Steelers game. “I am ready to do it as long as they need me.” The team also has RB Brian Westbrook, who will be used in spots on returns, though the coaches obviously will monitor his touches.

I know this is not a popular opinion, but it pisses me off when they refuse to use a guy on their roster who not only has experience returning punts, but has been quite prolific in that role. His name is Brian Westbrook, but of course, he cannot be asked to return punts because there is an omnipresent fear that someone will breathe on him, and he will get injured.

Yes, I understand his injury history.

I also understand that every player is at risk to get injured on every play. It's part of the game. And yes, I get the fact that returning punts can be dangerous because there are players running with a full head of steam at a guy who is starting from a stationary position.

Nevertheless, Westbrook can field a punt cleanly and has experience doing it. He also knows how to call for a fair catch to prevent having his head torn off.

If Reid is so gung-ho on making special teams guys contribute in other ways, he has the perfect candidate for the job in Westbrook.

Seriously, if Steve Smith can return punts, so can 36.

I think they just felt that PR just wasn't important, due to their arrogance about the offense and how someone like Mahe could look efficient in doing it from first glance. I mean, how else do you explain 1) having no backup plan, and 2) having Greg Lewis as your backup plan? No need to waste Westbrook in another role when you can plug in just about anyone.

Even Reid himself admitted in the PC that he wants his returners to just catch the ball, not necessarily give the other team something else to plan for. Catch the ball, then anything more will be less field for my brilliant offense.

Don't agree with putting Westbrook out there (since he's more valuable to this team than Smith is to Carolina - and I understand about injuries happening on just about any and every play), but they've been so nonchalant about the position and it showed. And it came back to bite them.

I don't agree that Westbrook is the answer either long term - but he ABSOLUTELY should have been out there on that last punt. Putting Reed out there was retarded. I guess the Fat Man forgot about Westbrook winning them a game with a punt return a couple years ago.

You play to win the game.

Overall yesterday was very frustrating, but to put it in perspective, Reid is 3-6 I believe on opening day. If they're 2-2 at the bye they'll be fine. They almost always start slow.

So if you’re going to use half my screen name the least you could do is have the common decency to refer to me as Mr. Douche bag.

The "ladies" at my watch party yesterday informed us that there really is no such thing as a douche bag any more. He should really refer to you as "Mr. Douchebottle".

He should have been out there to fair catch the last punt, but who knows how rusty he is?

With Westbrook...I don't think you risk him. Name me one other starting RB int eh NFL who returns punts. They are planning on giving Westbrook 25- 30 touches per game and Steve Smith gets 6 touches per game on average...that's another reason to spare Westbrook.

In this case you absolutely have to look at Tom Heckert. They quit using Westbrook on returns 3 years ago. 3 years and they haven't been able to find a replacement!

If you look at just the 2006 punt return stats (just the real returners), at least 1/2 to 3/4 of the guys on that list were drafted in the last 3-4 years. Beyond that, Dexter Wynn (twice cut by the Eagles is on the list). Eddie Drummond, cut just a couple weeks ago and signed by the Chiefs, is on that list. Allen Rossom, traded for a future 7th round pick a week ago, is on that list. Dante Hall, traded for a 5th round pick, is on that list. Chad Morton, a current street free agent, is on that list. Alvin Pearmen, traded last week or a future draft pick, is on that list. Tim Dwight, who averaged 10 yards per return last year, is on that list.

I mean, they are asleep at the fucking wheel here.

Is it possible that part of the reason they were so high on Bloom is the crossover appeal for non-football fans?

In his defense he was more than likely thinking on these terms...

douche bag

1) Somebody who you think is a complete retard and doesn't know anything about what they're talking about.

2) Someone who talks shit, starts shit, wont finish their shit, &@ and the end of the day still thinks they own the universe.

3) Individual, or individuals who piss you off on good days, and piss you off even more on bad days.

4) Is a person that is a total moron and doesn't think before he/she speaks or acts.

Did anyone see the head to head hit that Lewis took on the first punt return that led to the GB TD? I watched it again today and it is clearly a penalty that should have been caled and given the eagles the ball at the 40. What could have been...

I don't know where to put this, so I'm just going to put it here. Spuds wrote an article on the Eagles site today about Considine and his "outstanding" start to the season (I thought he was just solid).

Remember all of those questions about the defense, oh, about a week ago? Could the Eagles stop the run? Were the linebackers good enough? Could Considine provide the big-play ability at strong safety? On and on. You know the questions, because you were asking them.

Well, the Eagles went out and laid one on the Packers, played a really good defensive game and started to build a defensive identity. Jim Johnson wants his players to play aggressive football, to fly around, to play fast and to be a collectively smart group. In Green Bay, the Eagles allowed one scoring drive -- with three other scores coming off of turnovers -- and started to build some confidence.

Gotta love the balls of talking about how the defense "laid one on the Packers" after they lost to a team that probably won't see 8 wins this year. I'm also glad Considine has arrived and all the defensive questions have been answered after the Eagles held an offense they've been handling easily for years.

while i'm not ready to annoint, i thought considine played a very good game on sunday, in several different areas, blitzing, coverage and run support. one down, 15 to prove.

btw, a co-worker told me on thursday that considine let the nation as a punt returner at Iowa in his junior or senior yr.

does anyone remember this ?

heard bwest quoted the other day.. actually heard the audio so its no misquote. he said he only has so much energy to give in a game, and to put him back there regularly on punt returns and kicks would take away some of the energy needed for regular running and passing downs.

its what he said.
