Surprises for today's games

GB raping the Gints.....should have expected the difficulty with Manning injured, but if you take away the muffed punts, the Birds aren't all that bad. I know...I know....you can't say team A beat team B and team A beat team C.....therefore...you know....the Birds are better than the Gints...but with Eli out...they look not so good. Plus, their defense looks bad.

51 points on a Marvin Lewis team.....holy crap. That score board read like a Madden NFL Xbox score.

Houston is 2-0. Schaub 20-28....pretty good so far. He played well against a decent defense in Carolina.

The Bills suck. Dick effin Jauron...are you kidding me?

Jules I was thinking the same type thing, it almost looks like the Pack and Eagles should have solid D's this year, and with the way the Gints are giving up points I'm loving it... so as long as the birds put a serious beat down on the skins all should be right in the world...

What I learned from today:

- The Giants are a HORRIBLE team, even with Eli. That defense made Romo look like Tarkenton, and Favre looked 10 years younger. Spags is doing a great job from within - I mean, even Aikman was saying he had no idea what Ds they were calling.
- Ditto Cincinnati. Giving up 51 on the road to a Cleveland team that only scored 44 in its last 5...abysmal.
- Man, that Patriots team looks real distracted, doesn't it?
- Houston has proven me wrong. So far.
- Ditto New Orleans. Wow, reality checks them into the boards.
- McNabb better have a field day tomorrow, or half of the city is going to be clamoring for Kolb; the other half wondering why Garcia isn't here.

what I also learned:

it pays to get a whiny bitch at WR if they are really good at it.

-Norv Turner still stinks

-Auto draft picks a better fantasy team than I do

-Shanahan loves sticking it to the Raiduhs and his old boss

-That Detroit game vs the Birds is not looking so much like a cakewalk now

- It never gets old beating the Mets

This isn't a surprise, but from a purely objective football viewpoint, the Patriots no-huddle offense is a thing of beauty. Hate giving them too much credit, but it's the pinnacle of football offense. Last night they looked like a Madden team. Unstoppable.

Here's something else I learned (well, re-confirmed) - Lucha Latte is an idiot. He went on TV last night and said he asked Brady if he got some competitive advantage from the cheating, and Brady said 'no', acting as if it's some big issue. What, did you think he was going to say "yes"? What a nimrod.

For me, the most interesting things were:

- The badness of the Giants D...no pride.

- Larry Johnson, Tomlinson, Gore, Steven Jackson, and Thomas Jones...short list of pro Bowl backs who don't have a single 100 yard rushing day between them through 2 weeks. Additionally, Vince Young has more rushing yards than Tomlinson and Reggie Bush only has 16 more rushing yards than Tony Romo.

- Browns/Bengals...jesus.

- The crazy games and finishes. The Jets had the game set to go to overtime, but McCariens dropped a TD pass and they turned the ball over 2 plays later. The Raiders had the Broncos beat as Janakowski booted a 52 yard field goal in overtime. Thing is...Shanahan called a last second time out and Sebastian missed his next try, gave the Broncos great field position, and they kick a game winner of their own a few moments later.

- I don't know if I'm just sensitive to it or what, but special teams have been a MAJOR factor in the games I've watched over the first two weeks.

Just yesterday the Giants blew a field goal because of a bad snap early in a close game and a fumbled kickoff return broke the game open for the Packers.

Dante Hall fumbled a game away for the Rams just 1 week after his replacement in KC fumbled one away for them.

The Bears get another Punt return for TD from Hester (a second one was called back on a hold).

The aforementioned Broncos game was their second straight walk-off win with an Elam FG.

The Eagles obviously paid dearly for their special teams miscues.

Just a lot of special teams craziness.

- The offense and numbers being put up after 2 weeks is completely absurd and the guys putting up those numbers, for the most part, are random. The Ronald Curry's of the world tearing it up while a guy who appeared to be a budding superstar last year, Lee Evans, has 4 catches for 20 yards after two weeks.

- The comeback player of the year award is off to a pretty amazing start...and 3 guys with Raider connections are all on the top of my list right now. Lamont Jordan is a monster. Randy Moss is a monster. Dante Culpepper is probably going to take the reins of the Raiders offense and with the pieces around him, he might be able to put up some numbers.

This has been a pretty shocking start to the season, IMO.

Are you talking about Moss or T.O. or both?

A very unpleasant surprise for SZR's fantasy team has been Laurence Maroney losing carries and TDs to Sammy Morris. Suck it, Belichek.

BTW, the Pats made the Chargers (who are probably the 3rd best team in the NFL) look like a high school team. I know it's seriously unlikely, but who is going to beat them this season?

They might have the toughest schedule in football, but they are in another league this year.

Indy has the best chance to beat them this year, but even then, NE was a couple of dropped passes away from gaining revenge from SBXX.

It's going to be a great game between those two teams.

I also think you're giving SD a lot more credit - they're not the same team they were last year. Whereas last year they matched up better with NE, they're just not as good this year, and it showed.

What about the Chargers isn't as good as last year?

The D should be just as good (NE is just a buzzsaw) and they should technically be better offensively since Norv (for all his head coaching failures) is an offensive mastermind.

BTW, I agree that the Chargers won't finish as well as last year, but I think they are still the 3rd best team in football.

What about the Chargers isn't as good as last year?

They lost just about their entire coaching staff. And they've been replaced by Norv Turner, who just isn't as good. Personnel-wise, they're just about the same, but it's not as if they're inserting Barry Switzer.

Last year's team doesn't go into Foxboro and lose by 24 points, even to this Pats team.

You could even chalk it up to learning a new system (which is why they haven't taken off yet), but as a HC Turner's proven as mediocre, and Rivers looks like he's regressed a bit.

They could turn into an offensive juggernaut before the season's over, but as of right now, they're not where they were.

I agree about the absurdity of the first two weeks. Usually, there are alot of surprises in one week, not this many in two consecutive weeks.

EAG - both. TO gave McNabb a legit target and was on pace to having a great/TO'esque year EVEN AFTER the arguments but before his suspension. I prefer to win and have fun with people who I don't work with. Moss is sick.....and sicker with Brady getting him the ball.

The Chargers have regressed under Norv Turner. Why would anyone give this guy a job?

Incidentally, Brady's answering "no" to the question implies that there was cheating but that it didn't help him. The method he used to answer it suggested that he wasn't helped by it...PERIOD. Not that he wasn't helped by it for the only time they were caught cheating. Asshole.

Thing of beauty my ass. They have a stacked offense and a solid defense. Not winning would be inexcusable.

Can someone explain to me why couldn't the Gold Standard pull something like this off?

I agree that the coaching staff is a loss. but last years Pats team didn't have a healthy Maroney, Randy Moss, Donte Cosksuckerfaceworth, Wes Welker, Sammy Morris, or Adalius Thomas.

I think the Chargers are basically the same team with a new coaching staff, but the Pats improved a good defense and added more great offensive weapons in one season than any team I can remember.

That's the thing, though - the coaching staff can't just be said it's a loss. San Diego has trailed off in a way that you can't really explain, especially for the personnel they have.

I don't want to run around in circles, since we both agree the Pats are beastly - they just don't crush this team by 24 if Marty and Crew are still coaching. It's still a loss, based on the improvements they've made, but the Chargers wouldn't be out of it by halftime.

I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the game but you never know; did anyone else get the feeling that the ref's almost refused to throw flags on the Pats last night?!?

a couple of non-calls that kind of surprised me (because the Eagles weren't on I watch several games yesterday) Welker spiking the ball more than a few times after catching a pass for a 1st down(why didn't the Eagles sign him again?!?) I saw that new rule enforced at least 4-5 times yesterday and Al actually made a comment avbout him being lucky to have not been flagged for the spikes...
another one LT was running through the middle on a 3rd and short, he gets his head to the 1st down marker and then you see a hand pull his facemask and drag him back so he is short and doesn't make the play... it was 3rd and short so you know there was a line judge watching his forward progress and had to have seen it but no flag...

There were several other flags (and don't get me wrong there were flags thrown against the Pats) that IMO should have been thrown...

All that said I doubt it would have changerd the outcome of the game, and I just can't believe that the Pats are able to put that good a team together and still be under the cap... Unless Moss melts down or they get destroyed by the injury bug I don't think there is an NFC team even close to them, and only a few AFC that might have a good enough defense to stop/slow them down...

OK enough about the Pats, ST's around the league are once again proving that they are a legit 3rd of the team...

(I know it's fantasy but how the hell can someone score 116 points and still lose?!? as soon as I saw I was against Palmer I new it was over, unless R Brown scores me 33 points tonight...)

I don't get the NFL. The Chargers and Saints appear to suck. In the case of the Chargers.......is Merriman serving his suspension?

Dallas looks modestly legit.

Green Bay's defense has been pretty good and Favre has delivered. The Colts don't seem to dominate anything.

The SB appears to be theirs to lose.
