McNabb tells HBO that race is an issue at QB position
Donovan McNabb says African-American quarterbacks are perceived differently than white quarterbacks in a wide-ranging interview that will air tonight on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel."
In the conversation, which will be shown at 10 o'clock, McNabb also talks about the pressure of being the quarterback in this city and what it takes to tick him off.
At one point, interviewer James Brown asks McNabb about how people perceive him as a quarterback, alluding to the lack of African-Americans at the position because some people thought "they weren't smart enough."
"There's not that many African-American quarterbacks, so we have to do a little bit extra," McNabb says.
When pressed by Brown, McNabb continues, "Because the percentage of us playing this position, which people didn't want us to play this position, is low, so we do a little extra."
Brown later pushes on with the race issue after McNabb talks about people's reactions to his play.
"I pass for 300 yards, our team wins by seven, [mimicking] 'Ah, he couldn've made this throw, they would have scored if he did this,' " McNabb explains.
Brown then asks, "Doesn't every quarterback go through that?" McNabb says flatly, "Not everybody."
Brown ponders if the media is as tough on Carson Palmer or Peyton Manning, or if they are more harsh on McNabb because he's an African-American.
"Let me start by saying I love those guys," McNabb says with a smile. "But they don't get criticized as much as we do. They don't."
The interview begins with McNabb speaking about his time here in Philly.
"Every year I'm part of some criticism," McNabb says with a chuckle during an interview that appears to be set in McNabb's home. "But every day that we go through life, you're faced with a lot of adversity. Now the answer is how do you handle the adversity. How do you respond?
"I try to handle myself with class. I try to handle myself with dignity. I think sometimes people look to players to act out, speak loudly, pretty much be an idiot. But that's not me."
The piece dives into McNabb as a child growing up first in Chicago, then in the mostly white suburb of Dolton, Ill. McNabb's parents, Sam and Wilma, talk of how they raised their sons to always try to do the right thing and to be leaders, not followers. McNabb talks of his struggles with bullies in the neighborhood, admitting to getting into a few fights. Brown then asked what pushes McNabb's buttons now.
"If you put your hands on me, I've got something for you," McNabb seriously proclaims. "You can talk all you want to. If you continue to try me, then we've got a problem." *

It didn't make tonite's show, but the best part is an outtake where upon walking in to McNabb's living room, James Brown steps in a huge pile of dog shit.

...it is just as easy to get this guy to say "media worthy" crap as it is with T.O., Barkley, Deion Sanders, etc. You'd think he'd learn to just STFU after a few years, but...

Even more interesting is the fact that a group of Jewish men (Banner and Lurie) likely gave an Italian (Spadaro) permission to hang him today on Eagles Live.

McNabb walks on water
He would, but when he heard the talk about Jesus being a black man, he decided not to feed into the stereotype and shout from the shore like everyone else.

When McNabb gets booed, it's not because he's black. McNabb gets booed when he plays like shit. Last time I checked, Mike Schmitt and Ron Jaworski are not black.
I'm sure there are a couple of knuckle heads who don't like McNabb because he's black, but I got to believe it is a extremely small percentage. It's the fact that McNabb thinks people have a problem with his race is what makes it a problem. YOu know, that around the McNabb dinner table, momma has tried to tell whom ever will listen that Philly is hard on McNabb, because Philly is racist. victim bus a little
Two/Three years ago, McNabb was the cover boy for the NFL. So was Brady, but Brady did win a couple of super bowls.
I don't know McNabb's personal history with racism, but it does seems a little bit of a cop-out to play the race card, because he scruntinized as a QB.
McNabb would be a great guy to have as neighbor. Good guy, family man, does the right things. Just hit the open man when your at your job...

23 out of 126 listed QB's at NFL.com are AA
26 out 300 RB's at NFL.com are white...and 95% are fullbacks who don't have a career carry. We're getting screwed McNabb....

Asked if white quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer are held to the same standards, McNabb replied: "Let me start by saying, I love those guys. But they don't get criticized as much as we do. They don't."
Manning (up until last year) was labeled one of the biggest QB chokers IN NFL history. The guy had a huge monkey on his back and was criticized relentlessly. What the fuck is this guy talking about.
In an interview on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" to be broadcast Tuesday, McNabb said black quarterbacks "have to do a little bit extra" because there are relatively few of them, adding "people didn't want us to play this position."
Right now I don't want you playing the position because YOU FKN STINK. Not because of the color of your skin you stupid SOB.
This article speaks volumes why this guys head is so FUCKED UP.
Donovan God bless you and thanks for the memories but the Kolb era can not start fast enough for me.

I gotta say that I personally believe McNabb gets more shit than any other QB in the league, hands down.
He's the only QB in the league who gets attacked for random stuff completely unrelated to football, like his mother's big trap, his Dad's big trap, not being black enough, being a company man, accused of being overrated BECAUSE he's black, getting called out by the NAACP, having 2 parents, laughing too much, etc.
That said, I don't think any of that stuff was really racially motivated. Most of the worst attacks were perpetrated by black men and women (T.O>, his mom, his dad, J. Wyatt Mondesire, Screamin A, Bernard Hopkins, Michael Irvin, etc). The other serious crime against him was Rush, but even that wasn't racially motivated, IMO...it was retarded and misguided, but I don't think he was attacking him because he was black. He was attacking him because he had an agenda.
So I believe McNabb gets more than any good player in football and believe that despite his retardedness, he seems like a good guy.
He's just dumb and believing this is all racially motivated is another example of that.

Interesting comment by Shaun King on ESPN today was that you don't see the same patience with developing black QBs compared to white QBs. I don't know if this is true, but I think maybe it was his relatively early dismisal (6 years in the NFL) that had him talking about his sour grapes?
Seemed like an interesting point.

He will feel much better after he gets cut or traded and wins a Super Bowl w/ another team.
I can't see why he would possibly agree to this interview at this point in time, OTHER than to head off and/or gain sympathy for/in the upcoming QB controversy. Which, if he is 100% healthy, should not exist whatsoever.

Did it really matter that Rush's agenda entails a daily barrage on the "liberal media"? The fact is he used McNabb's skin color to belittle the man's success. I do agree that McNabb takes a whole hell of a lot of crap though for irrelevant stuff. So I'd like to offer Donnie my apology for all the things I said about his accuracy and touch in the past (even though they're true).
Words hurt.

Listening to his interview last night, you continue to get the picture of what his two main issues are:
- He's sensitive/hung up on race.
- He's really stupid. Listening to him struggle forming sentences and answering questions is painful. He carries himself really, really well and doesn't show an outward nervousness, but he misspeaks constantly. Maybe it's just a form of nerves, but he comes off as mildly retarded.
Also, his tough-talk must not be very sharp from getting the free pass on physical confrotnation as the only black kid in a white neighborhood. His "If you put your hands on me, then I've got something for you".
Not exactly Dirty Harry and not even a little bit believable.

agreed FD, he sounded retarded. Also, the highlights of him scrambling when he was a rookie made you realize how much his body/mobility has diminished. That being said, i don't think the interview was that damaging and really shouldn't be a big deal.
p.s Sean Young should be put down...

I love the pic F-D--pretty much sums it up.
Did anyone ever remember Randall bitching this much about race? About being unfairly treated in this town?
Maybe Don need to go back and watch tapes of the Eagles fans booing Bobby Hoying, Doug Peterson, the Detmer brothers and all of the other shit White QBs this team has trotted out on the field.
Having a thick skin is just as much a part of the QBs job description as throwing a pass--it simply comes with the territory.
This whole thing really feels like the end of Supah 5 in Philly.
