I met a Giants fan on Saturday was telling me the Eagles would have no trouble with the Giants because they're defense was soooo bad. Their secondary especially is suspect.

But today the Giants did a lot better. They have Spagnuolo as the new defensive coordinator and a lot of players have been out of position the first two games. And Burress had his usual big plays.

I only caught the last four minutes of this game (after driving home delirious with joy from the stadium), but I have to think that the Giants pulled off the comeback of the year with the amount of press they are getting from the Skins game yesterday.

Yes, I know it was 17-3 at the half. But were they utterly phenomenal in most of the 2nd half that I missed? In the game I was watching, the Redskins were sacked, fumbled a few times, and lost about 50 yards on penalties. And that's just the last four minutes. And yet they made their way down the field and were finally stopped by a goal line stand - and just barely at that, considering the RB had space to score if he didn't trip on his blocker going by. The Redskins nearly won in spite of themselves.

I can't remember where I read it, but apparently the Lions DB weren't playing press coverage this week but were giving a huge cushion.

I wish they broadcast replays so I could see this one on TV. I'd love to see how Curtis was getting so incredibly open on some of those plays. The TD where he caught it around the 20yd line was sick - he no defenders in a 30yd radius. We were cheering when McNabb let go of the ball.

You know it's a good game when I'm calling my brother during the fight song, and by the 5th TD he tells me to stop running up his cell minutes.

What they were talking about mostly is the success the Giants had on 3rd down against a D that was #1 in the league against it.

Sure, Washington's offense isn't exactly like Detroit's, but the Giants made enough plays on offense and took advantage of a few opportunities to win the game.

This doesn't make the Giants the team to beat in the East now, but they won a tough road game against a division opponent after being counted out in the first half. This makes the Eagles' game a little more interesting, because now both teams are looking into breaking even, and neither can afford another division loss.

Breakdown in coverage for the one play - he just ran by the guys. He was probably as confused about being so open as the DBs were covering him. Didn't help that at times the DBs were playing 10+ yards off them. If they were doing press coverage, they were just running with them and not trying to break off their timing.

whether a team plays press coverage or 2-deep zone is not a player choice, but a team philosophy...many call it the defensive scheme.

the scheme is kinda like the thesis statement of a term paper. once you have a scheme, then the coach and GM try to find players that fit the system. for example, not all corners played press coverage is college, or were good at it. they shouldnt be drafted by a team with a press coverage type of defensive scheme.

pesonally, i'm not sure what type of coverage the lions were playing, i only know it was poor.

to me, football is all about matchups and timing.

some teams just match up better against certain other teams, due to schemes and personel.

i also think the timing on each game is a factor. detroit, 2-0, probably feeling too good about themselves. the birds, 0-2, would probably have mauled almost any other team as well yesterday.

add that to the matchups, and you get 56-21.
