Eagles Beat Writers/Columnists With Balls

They've been in short supply for a long time, but I think we might finally start to see some gonads emerging in the Philly press.

Seeing as how we know a good number of these writers read this site (as well as plagiarize from it), I think it's appropriate to give credit to the ones who have stopped acting like apologists and started questioning why this batshit crazy regime is systematically destroying the Eagles chances at winning a Super Bowl in the next 5 years. We all know that as soon as these guys come out and criticize the Eagles, they'll get Eckel-ed or transferred to the Flyers or Sixers beat after Banner leans heavily on the DN or Inquirer, so I think it's only appropriate that these writers get some public recognition for taking a bold stand and hopefully igniting the groundswell of anger that leads to the end of the Andy Reid era. And who knows-- maybe Rich Hofmann will get jealous and decide to grow a pair, too.

The first guy who deserves praise is Les Bowen, who has slowly been chipping away with sarcastic commentary over the past year or two. After Sunday, it looks like Les is eagerly awaiting his Darksider robe.

Checkout today's bitchslap of a column, including these choice phrases:

Take away Westbrook, and you have Temple football, in green and white uniforms.

Can somebody please explain what the hell is going on with Reggie Brown?

The Eagles also needed more discipline last season, when they were the most penalized team in the NFL. Wonder when the problem might be addressed?

I've also started to respect Phil Sheridan, who gave a mild ripping on Reid's crippling addiction to the pass on Monday:

It was almost as if Reid and Mornhinweg held the QB up while the Giants defenders pounded him.

What's surprising is that Reid and Mornhinweg didn't make any perceptible adjustments to protect McNabb. Isn't that what coaches do?

The serious passaholic is always making excuses. There was something on film he thought he could exploit. The run game wasn't quite working. The other team had the lead, so he had no choice but to throw. The dog ate the running plays.

I am shocked - SHOCKED - that this has gone on for this long without anyone giving mention to Culley and the chicken/egg issue.

Culley made Reggie Brown good in 2005. He nearly made him a 1,000 yard receiver in year 2.

Why did Culley ruin him this year?

The only answer I can muster is "The Culley giveth and the Culley taketh away."

Both of those articles were great. I especially liked the passaholic quote and this one from Bowen's article:

So let's hope for a long, healthy career for Westbrook, the only Pro Bowl-level talent in McNabb's arsenal since T.O. nutcased his way out of town, and the only such weapon McNabb is ever likely to have, until the inevitable day when the front office decides to blame this whole mess on him and he goes to play somewhere else.

The left tackle situation played serious havoc on their plans. How do you gameplan anything when you can't even slow down the blindside pass rush? I do have to give them a tiny bit of a pass on that. But...

The heart of the matter remains the same. This team does not adjust. Period. End of story. Not at halftime, not in the 4th quarter, barely even when someone gets injured.

Do whatever you want to them, and they'll come into the 3rd quarter playing their own pre-planned game. And if you can get ahead by ten points or more after the 1st quarter, then send in some pass rush schemes because that's the only thing the Eagles will be doing.

How about putting in a tight end to help with blocking or using a back who is not named Reno Motherfuckingmahe?

Also, as has been discussed ad nauseum, running to that side (or just running period) might have slowed some of the rush.

Screen passes (remember them?) help, too.

They tried a couple screen passes, but they were either to the right, or the rush came so strong that they were blown up before they had a chance to develop.

Still, it doesn't change the fact that he thought Justice gave up "only" four sacks. That's comedy right there.

And Mahe should not be on this team.

Not on punt returns.
Not in the backfield.
Not on kick returns.
Not on crucial 3rd downs.
Not trying to pick up the blitz.

Considering that he was coaxed into coming back, that should tell you everything you need to know about this year.

I read this over at the PE.com site, and I tried to look in the NY Papers for this quote, but couldn't find it. Does anyone think this even remotely true?

I had the great thrill of reading an article in our local paper today of what went down Sunday night at the the Meadowlands. Strahan was thrilled with the NFL record tying sacks but was disappointed that they didnt break the record. "We left at least 8 sacks out there on the field", " Osi should have had at least three more sacks, myself two more and as a team another three" Strahan was quoted as saying. "We went back and watched the tape and we were that close". It's just like "Spag's"(Spagnulo) told us Pierce was quoted as saying, when Mcnabb is going to pass he licks his fingers that means he is going to try and pass to the right! He taught us alot about Mcnabb and his tendencies, we thought that they would change some stuff up to kind of counter act what "Spag's" was telling us but they didnt. Even Strahan himself was bewildered that they didnt give Justice any help at LT. "We just kept coming at that side and we were like WOW we just cant believe it this is to easy"! Strahan also said that Mcnabb had lost his scrambling abilities and actually felt for him being left out their to get beat down with no help, "It's bad when DE and DT's are chasing him down and catching him and throwing him to the ground from behind" Strahan was quoted as saying. This was the easiest game we have ever played against the Eagles since 99' Strahan was also quoted as saying.

Kearse was done when they picked him up in '04.

Here's another one, courtesy of Dana Pennett O'Neil. Featuring such quotes as;

He (Reid) even said that the Eagles' troubles started with him and that he needed to do a better job. The problem is, Reid is quickly becoming the boy who cried wolf. He has said those same words so many times they've lost any sort of sincerity that might actually be behind them.

&

The need for substance is upon us from the now slightly tarnishing gold standard. The four consecutive runs to the NFC Championship Game that everyone hung their hat on are now three seasons removed and, at last check, the parade still hasn't occurred.

Seriously, if someone designed a T-shirt with a picture of Reid on the front with the words "I NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB"- I'd buy it in a heartbeat

I don't know if that's funny or sad.

Joe Banner calling the papers for more coverage is hilarious, but even a story about the Phillies taking center stage in the city is really about the Eagles losing center stage.

Anything that irritates Joe Banner is alright by me, though.

If the Eagles go 1-4 in 2 weeks, I'm sure the official Eagles site will begin selling "authentic" robes for $300.

More coverage on how much ass Reid sucks wouldn't bother me. It'd just raise the pressure on the Fat Man.

There is no pressure on Cap'n Andy. He's signed through 2011(?) and knows that Li'l Jeffy won't eat that much salary if he's fired. He doesn't give a rat's ass about other peoples' opinions, so that's a non-starter.

The only pressure he could feel would be from Tammy about their drug-addled offspring and I don't see that happening either.

Face it. We're stuck with a Poor Drafting, Bad Talent Evaluating, Passaholic Head Coach who Ignores the Obvious for at least 3 more years.

You'd like more press for you shitty waste of a team, Joe? Well, Domo's here to the rescue.

We've rolled our eyes every time he has stared down at us from the NovaCare Ritz stage and told us that it's "my job to put players in better position to make plays."

But we haven't been rolling them this season because Reid, the winningest coach in Eagles history, has done a lousy job of coaching thus far. His fingerprints are all over two of the Eagles' three losses.
