This column is an embarrassment on so many levels I don't know where to start. Speaks for itself I guess.

*thinks it has to do with either Sportsweek or Marcus Hayes*

*clicks link and discovers it's Sportsweek, by Ed Rendell*

*does not proceed further, but is satisfied in imagining the lunacy within*

Guess he needs to have SOMETHING to do with him being all single and all

Sheridan misses some things (McNabb's departure was years in the making, for example), but he's on point here:

:"I think there are a lot of positives to look at here. Very few teams can kind of retool the way that we retooled and still compete, put yourself in a position to compete for a championship, and we were able to do that."

There was no talking of rebuilding or retooling when Vick was lighting up the scoreboard in Washington in November. But in January, after good defensive coaches figured out how to attack and contain Vick, it suddenly became a rebuilding year.

That was hogwash then, and it was hogwash last week when Reid suddenly started talking about how young his linebackers and safeties are. It is ludicrous that, after 13 years of devaluing the linebacker position, Reid would suddenly cite it as an area of season-defining importance. He was the guy who let Stewart Bradley and Quintin Mikell walk, who never adequately replaced Brian Dawkins, who decided a fourth-round rookie was ready to start at middle linebacker.

And now this season crashed and burned because the linebackers and safeties were young?

Worse still, Reid is trying to pull the same bait-and-switch as last year. Once again, a season of high expectations retroactively becomes a "work in progress." The only difference is that this team has failed so completely that the coach didn't have to wait until after the season to try to snow us.

If the Eagles retooled last year and went from an 11-win team to a 10-win team, and they are a work in progress that can be no better than an 8-win team, what will 2012 bring? Can the Eagles rebuild all the way to 0-16?

I don't think even Reid could engineer this group of players to go 0-16. There's too much talent around for them to pull a Colts.

i've really been loving phil sheridan's coverage of the eagles this season. this is another excellent article where, among other things, he implies that lurie's inability to break from reid has to do with intimidation. an interesting take i had not heard that makes some sense.

Sheridan dropping the reality of this team:

The Eagles have long preached the importance of building through the draft and using free agency to fill the occasional hole or add a budding superstar. The idea that you build a team with veterans and let your draft picks try to crack the lineup is just absurd.

The truth is, the Eagles have been forced to add so many veterans the last few years because their drafts have been terrible. Going back to their last truly excellent team - the 2004 squad that went to the Super Bowl - the Eagles have done a terrible job of drafting replacements as defensive stars aged out.

Sheridan's transformation from happy-go-lucky guy to Michael Douglass in Falling Down has been quite impressive. I'm amazed by the rage he now feels toward the Philadelphia Eagles, and sadly, his points are valid. To me, he seems like a guy who has been beaten down so many times by his girlfriend to the point where he can no longer stand her complete and total lack of logic. Now that the sex is no longer good, he's ready to jump ship...or kill her.

been saying the same thing about sheridan all year. he's been great and never gave an inch when the eagles put together the end-of-year win streak. i've really enjoyed his perspective this season.

Smallwood suggests the Eagles go after Peyton Manning, hilariously inferring that the Eagles won't be able to resist a free agent coming off such a serious injury.

Marcus Hayes, who may be sniffing glue, writes a column that says the Eagles have the talented youth ready to win now...but they're also built for the long-haul, so he really says absolutely nothing.

However, he praises most of the players on a world-class level, and my favorite description of his is reserved for "scintillating, 25-year-old corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie."

NTFF! What the hell is the matter with him?

Optimism is fine, but that's hilarious. He sounds like Rob Lowe on Parks and Rec.

"Todd Herremans is literally the most important lineman in NFL history"

I'm really only posting this because I had forgotten that N.D. Kalu ever existed.

We'll go with Sheridan for today, trying to bring us back to reality:

Reid not only survived his worst season, part of a three-year decline, he actually increased his power within the organization. That's quite a trick, and we'll probably never fully know exactly how it all came down. It is worth noting that Bob LaMonte - the agent who represents both Reid and, significantly, Howie Roseman - has a long history of successfully orchestrating from behind the scenes. It was LaMonte who engineered Jon Gruden's trade from Oakland to Tampa Bay and the 2002 Reid promotion that required the departure of GM Tom Modrak.

He's a good agent and, quite possibly, a hypnotist. Come to think of it, Lurie appeared to be in a trance last week.

With all this, it came as no surprise when Vick complained in an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic about his spot at No. 70 in a recent NFL Network ranking of players. After practice the other day, he really seemed surprised that he'd dropped from the top 20. Why? Because 2011, with all those interceptions and fumbles and red zone miscues, never happened, that's why.
