I think f-d is right, though, in that something could have been worked out with the IRS.

This happened to my friend, where she received a bonus check from work for covering someone on maternity leave. They gave it to her 2 months early, and told her they needed it back.

Now, I know she only had to pay back the amount on the check, not the amount before taxes.

Is Banner just trying to find a new way to pay the remaining balance on those blue and gold throwback uniforms?

Exactly KB. I'd have no problem giving back the money that I actually saw

It's the other 1.3 million I'd tell the eAgles to track down themselves.

On another note, Chris Cooley claimed to deposit his $9 million signing bonus check via the drive through at the bank.

I'm not sure why that absurd scenario is the only other possibility.

It's not the only possibility, but what would be the advantage of having his check sent to a money manager, who would receive it presumably a day or two after the actual payday, would have to somehow deposit it on his behalf, and wait a couple days for the check to clear as opposed to instantly having the money the deposited in his account and all his financial agents having access through secure online channels?

I have no clue how it works. I don't know anyone who ever received a $3 million paycheck. I'm just trying to use commons sense.

I have no idea, but lots of people who make this kind of money have someone to handle it for them (hence all the celebrities that get ripped off by their managers).

I know, we all have little to go on, and we're all trying to use common sense. I just think there are about 100 different things that could have happened, and not things like Westbrook getting the check and going to PNC. We're talking about people that hire people to cut their steak for them.

I think the problem here is the salary cap and the NFL.

As KB mentioned about a friend with the early maternity check bonus, I've had payroll errors before never had to deal with money that wasn't paid to me.

I think that because the salary cap is what it is, the Eagles have to receive $3 million to consider the matter closed and are probably not allowed to pay him until the issue is resolved.

I just can't explain why Banner the Bean Counter can't work this out with his brethren in the IRS.

Can't he just sit down with some of their higher ups, discuss the latest in brown cardigan fashion, compliment one another on their side-part, have a cheese sandwich, talk about male pattern baldness, make rat faces at each other, have some schnaps, talk about their latent homosexuality...

You know...the norm.

I don't disagree. I just think direct deposit (in some form) is the most likely scenario because it's the most efficient, gives him the most flexibility, and allows him to get his million more quickly and into the hands of his people instantly/online.

It could be anything, but I can't think of an easier/better way and it's also the way most likely to have created this mix-up on Westbrook's end (if there was a mix-up).

The other thing that's interesting is this was one of several bonus payments he received over the course of a season. It's not like he received a check for $100K each week for 2 months, got a check out of the blue for $1.7 million, and went back to 100K for the rest o the year. There was a minimum of 3 bonus checks he received (including this one) in the calendar year.

There's a possibility he didn't recognize it until his accountants were handling the books at the end of the year.

I read in "Fru(gal)'s The Boss" monthly that Joe Banner's favorite show is "Mama's Family".

He didn't actually say "favorite", though, b/c he said that's too strong a word and doesn't want to be too attached to something.

I figured his favorite show would have been "Num3bers" or "JAG".

I bet he jerks off to VHS tapes featuring 80's aerobics.

Sears catalogs (put that nickel you would have spent on a VHS at a garage sale to work for you!)

lets take this in 2 parts

the 1.7 mil. he owes it, no questions asked. if he didnt know it, his accountant should have. he's not THAT rich that he doesnt notice an extra 1.7 .

tax issue. yes he paid 1.3 mil in taxes he shouldnt have. when he gives back the 3 mil, his accountant files an immediate amended return for whatever tax yr it was for, and the taxes are then refunded to him, albeit over the course of several months. same with the social security taxes and any state and local taxes too.
