Umm-
YES HE DID. When he wasn't blaming the "black KKK" he was blaming hip-hop. Do I have to post that quote a second time?

I don't have a problem with him mentioning it, but BLAMING it is where I think he's full of it. KB is correct in one thing- rap is symptematic of the society, not the other way around.

You posted a quote directed at me from the article, then went on to address GGB. More comprehensive review available if necessary.

Seth,
That might be the case but for some hip-hop because of it flashiness and attitude seems to a be a lightning rod and often clouds what some of the more pressing issues may be. It just seems for many, in both the white and AA community that getting rid of HH is somehow a panacea.

A) He didnt blame it, Genius, PLEASE RE-READ how he CITES IT PLAYING A ROLE.
b) Readin your little link by Clubhouse Reporter #873 or whoever the F this dip thinks he is, (Reminds me of the S1W's- except they as someone said- along with Chuck and Flav when not tokin' the Gov't issued crack- woulda hated your take on things today);
If there is a sect of people that would allow themselves to be susceptiple to such an unscrupulous act by one's government (again, assuming I buy this theory which I do not) then doesnt that just kinda fall in line with Natural Selection or Darwinism as many call it nowadays?
Like the rats too stupid in the lab, not to cross the electrified pad, just to get at the sugar tablet, eventually die? Oh well?
Im honestly asking- and thats easier to do when you DO NOT believe that the gov't was intentionally targetting ANYONE, let alone had a role in the distribution and epidemic that was CRACK IN THE INNER CITIES IN THE 80s.

Which is why I have an issue about him pointing it out in an article that could've stood on its own without it.

I acknowledge that he blames black self hate and the black KKK, among other "catalysts"- but read the paragraph where he says until we get rid of the themes in the music nothing will change.
I got a news flash for ya. This stuff that happens in the music has already happened in the streets before it's verbalized and laid down on wax. It's not the other way around.

Exactly, that's why I said it's a symptom of the problem, and not the main root of it.

To GGB,
You state that he could have written the entire article without mentioning HH and it would have been just as effective and poignant? That may be the case but the mere fact that he DID mention HH and felt the need to mention "Soulja boy" which is the most innocous of rappers talking about shooting a load on some girls back have to do with gun violence and more importantly Sean Taylors death? It doesnt. He put it in there for the very reason we are having a debate about it now. To be controversial and ingratiate his ESPN brethren.
He is a fraud.

I think we all agree its not the CAUSE- but it aint helpin, not at all, and the more kids hear it, and an impressionable age- whats to shake those images from their minds as to WHAT THEY SHOULD EXPECT outta life?
Ya know?
For the record FB- I wasnt quoting Darwin, but I am aware that some use that term to describe that type of phenomenon.
Plus, tossin around Honorary Levelers names like Darwin always enhances one's post.

KB, even when you agree with me you're disagreeable.
(shakes head)
Anyway, my counterpoint to Seth (and Jason)is this: The way to get rid of violent themes in the music is to change the culture of the society. It makes the lyrics
not relevant and certainly not appealing. I can remember that in the late 70's and early 80's the only rap you heard was party rap like Sugar Hill Gang, Fat Boys, etc. Only until the mid 80's did the music change. You know why.

I think this is the problem. If kids grow up listening to rap, it gets into their brains. It re-establishes a culture of stupidity, violence, and disrespect in the next generation.
Rap/Hip-Hop didn't cause these problems, but is there anything doing MORE to help make sure the cycle repeats itself?
