I think they use the cap values, but I don't know for sure. We'll find out soon enough.

I'm pretty sure they use salaries for figuring out franchise.
As to bass's point, I can see the FO, once again, looking at a team that faced a lot of problems, and went 8-8 (with a win, of course). They'll just look at all those 3 and 4 point losses, and the games McNabb didn't play, as the reason they didn't compete for the division, and think everything is ok. Then, they'll add DJ Hackett as the missing piece.

If 5 is truly gone, then it's Kolb's show, which means they SHOULD bring someone in to help along with his progression and to not put all the pressure on him.
Just like they did when McNabb started. I wonder if Na Brown is available?

Most of those salaries are bloated with the signing bonuses, so, two things:
1) Are signing bonuses technically considered part of the salary, or are they a separate thing?
2) The salaries they use to determine the tag are the salaries the players are earning on April 16th, so if those bonuses are included as salary, there's a good chance they wouldn't count the following April 16, right?

I don't know how they handle signing bonuses when it comes to the franchise tag.
This year the TE franchise number was $3.3 million for non-exclusive and $4.3 million for exclusive.
If it would jump to $8 or $9 million next year, it would be the biggest jump for a franchise tag number in the history of the system.

Plus, that $8 or $9 million would be based on the bonuses included THIS year, not on the salaries on April 16th.
I think it's looking like a franchise tag would be a viable option at this point.

BTW, regarding McNabb and his improved play...
I know the sentiment is swinging back to keeping him in 2008 and that's what will likely happen. However, it shouldn't.
McNabb will probably have a great game this week. The Bills are the 27th ranked pass D in the NFL and the Eagles are playing with a giddy confidence that belies their record.
So far this season, McNabb has 4 games with a 100+ QB rating and the pass D rankings of those teams was:
- 17th
- 32nd
- 31st
- 30th
He also hasn't thrown for more than 1 TD against any other defense this season.

The other thing is, does he even want to be back? With the rumors of him being done with the fans, organization, et. al., why would he come back?
hey'll just look at all those 3 and 4 point losses, and the games McNabb didn't play, as the reason they didn't compete for the division, and think everything is ok.
That might yet happen, considering the last time they went with a star player it didn't turn out so well. But I'm hoping that they don't just settle for being "competitive", and that the chance of finally winning one is more important than staying within the pack.

I never claimed Mcnabb had a great year. What I saw was progression. Considering his high level of play for the majority of his time here, and the fact he had this " mediocre " season, (in which he is still ranked 11th in the league in QB rating) while recovering from a blowed up knee I am happy to give him another year...
Again all of this is under the assumption that they add an impact wr/te.
regarding the TE franchise tag...it has to be based of base salary, no bonuses.
Will LJ get a big time deal on the market this year? is their any team that would give him any money?

If this is true, then they have to give it to him. It'd be about $1.5 million

The eagles moved the ball very well this year between the 20's. As we all know, they struggled in the R-zone....
The numbers you gave are bad (no more than 1 TD) but are as much of a result of HORRENDOUS play calling in the RZONE as it is #5 not being able to complete a slant....

LEts say that, like last year, the franchise tag for a TE increases 31%. that would put this year # @ $5,700,000.
A lot cheaper than signing Dallas Clarke....
The downside of this is of course is that it means INDY can easily keep both clarke and Sanders.

If it's based off base salary, then how would it get that high? Is it base salary, or cap value, b/c everything I read says it's base salary.

Something of note that Dean-o will be interested in:
JJ said that a 3-4 is a possibility next year, basically due to the now perceived strength at LB

AMEN.
Is there a link to his quotes?
I saw where he said they will employ it like they did vs NE from time to time, but never saw where it would be "THE" scheme.

It was on Comcast last night, and it looked out of context, so I don't know if he meant he'd use it like against NE, full-time, or what.

You can forget about Bob Sanders. He is now the highest paid safety in the league.
I heard about it and didn't believe it, but a spot-check of the Colts roster and I see that all 22 of their starters have spent their entire career in Indy. That's pretty impressive.

Hit submit too soon. This of course means that the Colts can franchise D. Clark.

The only way the Cards would give Fitzgerald up is if the Bidwells ever determined they were going to really tank the team before they sold it or something. They talked Glendale into building "pink taco" stadium, and need to keep butts in the seats for as long as possible to justify the purchase. Therefore they have actually tried to assemble a decent team for the last couple of years, and they aren't as prone to making "Cardinal type" moves as they were in the past.

Magical long snapper Jon Dorenbos signed a 5 year extension.
Now I'm really excited about 2008.

If the Eagles seriously pursue CB in free agency, what's to say they start putting Sheppard on more limited/rotation duty as a DB and put him back to field punts and kicks?

There is going to be some very talented defensive backs on the market via FA or trade.
-Asante Samual will be an UFA who cant be franchised
-Randall Gay from NE
-my favorite, DANTE HALL, wants out of ATL. This guy is an absolute stud and the Eagles have the $$ to break the bank on him for a LT deal. Would the 18th pick in the draft get a guy like Dante Hall??
-Trufant from Seattle
-Ken Hamlin
I would like to see the Eagles aggressively pursue one of these guys and would not be surprised at all if they do so. It provides so many options in the secondary. Sheldon is well suited to play any position in the secondary. The guy may be the hardest hitter on the team and is solid in coverage.
If they can acquire a stud DB (Asante, Hall or Trufant), and a speed DE pass rusher, the off season will be a success on the defensive side. The Eagles NEED to make an '04 impact if #5 is staying. They must go for it all and break the bank. And grabbing one of these guys is a great start. They don't have the time to draft a DB and wait 3 years for him to develop.
On another note....Does anyone thing Donte Stallworth will be resigned with NE (they clearly aren't going to pay him the $6 mill)or will he hit the open market.
My question is, should the Eagles go after Dante and would Dante come back to the team. Would Stallworth solve the WR problem, or should the eagles look to sell the farm on a chad johnson or larry fitsgerald.
If they are able to get a DB and WR in the early stages of FA, this team will be very, very strong.
