Williams is due a $1 million bonus if he doesn't get the head job, so that makes sense

I don't think that Gibbs was a bad signing, considering the alternative. They were a real laughingstock after Spurrier, and they've made the playoffs twice in 4 years.
Gregg Williams, however, would be a step back for them. He failed when he was in Buffalo.

And that bonus just guarantees an easier road for the Eagles next year.

Yup. I'm guessing it's Williams simply because NOT promoting Williams would mean a housecleaning.
He was essentially promised the job whenever Gibbs gave it up, so I can't imagine him staying with the organization if they went out and got a new guy to leapfrog him.
I doubt the $1 million bonus is a motivating factor for Snyder, though.

Yah, I don't think that's the motivating factor, just more evidence he was told the job would be his

You don't think Snyder will dangle millions in front of Cowher? Not sure Cowher would take it, but I find it hard to believe that Snyder will settle for one of his assistants who hasn't won squat.

according to LaFontara of the post...
But I spoke to a source who knows Cerrato well who said he believes it will be Bill Cowher. He thinks that Cowher will get the keys to the kingdom and become the first $10-million coach, or in that range. "He's going to want the power Parcells had in Dallas," the source said. "Cowher's going to want to shop for the groceries. He lives in North Carolina, that keeps him pretty close to his home. I think that's where this thing is going."

Man, that guy got pantsed.
Cowher's going to want to shop for the groceries. He lives in North Carolina, that keeps him pretty close to his home.
I guess that's true if you think a 6 hour and 45 minute drive (disregarding beltway, I-95, I-85 traffic) is "pretty close to home."

Maybe a private jet is included in the contract. Just a 30 minute flight! Only that it'll take longer to get to the airport...

FWIW I had heard Cowher was on the short list in Balt too... but for him IF he were to come back the NFC would be the side to come back into, much weaker conferance better chance of making the playoffs...

The 1 million dollar clause in williams' contract is apparently bogus. not that it really matters.

tough break for Gibbs, always liked him and hope all goes well with his Grandson. It makes sense now that, that's the reason he's stepped down...

I dont see Cowher in DC. Money would not matter. The "Fantasy Football" owner and his extended list of "loonies" who have been brought in at various capacities within the team.
There is a reason why Washington is where they are. Class owners build class teams. Classless owners end up with mediocre teams. It kills the fanbase knowing Snyderbrenner owns this team.
I think there will be more coming out in the next couple of weeks behind Gibb's additional reasons for resigning.
A once proud franchise destroyed by an inept owner.

BrotherIggle, not sure about that, Gibbs is a class act and he said when he came back this time it was because he had raised his family and didn't think he would (as he did the last time he was coach) lose time with his family... His Grandson has Leukimia(sp) he wants to be around for hs family and I believe that is 100% the case.
Besides IF there were other reasons for his leaving other than the above mentioned I really don't think he'd be willing to stick around as an "advisor" he just doesn't think he would be able to give his all to the team with his GS on his mind...

Tat...I agree. Gibbs is a class act. I think the game passed him by and he was trying to play catch up, hence the 24 coach staff.
They showed a funny clip on the news last night down here...they showed clips of the fans the day it was announced that Gibbs was coming back. "It's not when, but how many Superbowls we'll win", "Our Savior has arrived!". Funny stuff.
