Maybe I'm mistaken, but if the Bengals are as cheap as you're all saying, they should be salivating at the chance to take a 6-8 mill. cap hit. That's money that they cannot spend. Assuming they usually max. out the salary cap, a 6-8 mill. cap hit is 6-8 mill. in the owner's pocket.

It's money they already spent to have a player on their team and dealing him would mean they cut him a huge check for services to be rendered in the future and let him walk with it. Basically, they paid him to play for him and they'd be paying for him this season while they continue to pay him and they still need to find a replacement next year.

They want to get every ounce of production out of Ocho for the money he's been paid.

I heard soemone and I can't remember who (to judge reliability), who said that it's not the cap hit itself. It's that it would force the Bengals to cut other players to meet the cap after the cut. The writer mentioned Rudy Johnson specifically.

In the end, the Bengals are either 1) standing on principle and the other teams are backing them and won't push it forward, 2) shooting themselves in the foot and will waste a chance to trade CJ or 3) really did mess the contract situation up so that they've forced themselves into a no-win situation. Boils down to this: He aint' going anywhere (something we all sort of settled on some time ago).

Ah...whatever. That was pretty much gibberish.

The point is the Bengals equate trading Chad to continuing to make car payments after you've sold the car or something like that.

For Mike Brown, trading Chad is like voting for Obama.

Personally, I hold McNabb to blame for all this.

If the Bengals feel like they're working on behalf of other NFL owners by doing this, they'll hold on to him, and since the NFL already controls part of the media, the media backlash won't be as bad as one would suspect.

Even beyond that, this is an opening salvo with the Union agreement expiring and the threat of a work stoppage in a couple of years. This will lead to something much, much bigger.

Well, Rudi Johnson sucks, so that might be a boon for their offense. The propaganda out there about the cap hit hurting their roster is just that...propaganda.

The cap hit is doable and they would be fine, but it's one of many barriers the Bengals are floating out there in an effort to force him back in line (by citing a trade is absolutely impossible).

I don't understand why teams don't lay these situations completely at the feet of the player. Why don't they just say (at some point), we can't agree on an extension and you want out. Since we're at a crossroad here, we'll allow you to repay all unearned pre-paid bonus money to buy your freedom.

Put it in the hands of the players and find out how bad they want it. If they respond "No...I want out, but only if I get paid twice", they'll lose any leverage or traction with the fans and there would be no pressure on the team.

I would say that at the end of last yr, GoCong looked 255, but the roster actually says 263.

Thats down 2 lbs from the roster and what it said last yr I think.

FD,
Think about it. Chad Johnson's case is a perfect example of why they don't do that. Teams like the Redskins would add any out of pocket expense to the player on top of the contract they have already negotiated. Teams would be able to buy any players freedom, regardless of the contract status. They would than add the money as a roster bonus. Big market, liquid teams would be able to spend away without having to give up draft picks.

Ironically, Spuds just spoke about GoCong's size and said that the LBs are huge (hence teh Birds getting away a little bit with smaller DLmen) and that GoCong's currently 260.

I don't know if you're listening to Spuds right now or not, but his comment on King Dunlap was hilarious.

The caller asked a question about how they can motivate him and Spuds said:

"Play or he's gone...that's his motivation. He gets 3 sandwiches and a handshake as a signing bonus and he gets cut if he doesn't play. How much more motivation do you need?"

I heard he lost his job this year to a true freshman, so hopefully it's just laziness and they can bring his potential out. In the 7th round, it's a good roll of the dice.

Not sure, but it appears his tongue is hanging out already, so that could be a minus for endurance.

The story with him (as I read about it) is he's 6'10" and about 310 lbs. He's built like a really doughy basketball player. His work ethic is poor (has difficulty keeping weight on, doesn't work hard in the weight room, and needs coaches forcing him do do anything), he has marginal strength, and he doesn't play up to his athleticism.

Supposedly has good feet and is the kind of guy who could really end up being a good LT, but it wouldn't exactly surprise anyone if he completely washed out or was one of those guys who the team was "really fucking high" on in year one, only to dump him in year two.

In the 7th round you're just looking for a developmental player you hope you get lucky on once every few years, so he fits the bill.

Read the same stuff, with additional comments regarding poor work with his hands, inability to lock onto a defender and being blessed with a bad anchor- likely due to playing too high.
Also, a poorer run blocker.

Essentially- he has teh ABILITY to play LT cos he has- and its his size that'll get him drafted.

And it did.

With this regime, I never have any expectations after the 5th round.

I guess Andy missed having George Hegamin around to push the blocking sled. That's probably where we'll be seeing most of this guy at camp until he gets cut.

Don't be fooled...they drafted him to make W.Justice look better in camp! "We don't need another left tackle, just look how Winston is dominating compared to the other young guys"...

Last year, I was hoping for something out of "Nasty Nate", that clearly failed, but my new under dog to root for is Joe Mays. Anytime you can read three articles about him, and they all highlight him as a "Hitter", I can;t help but root. One thing you really can;t teach is how to be a big hitter. You can teach someone to be a better tacker, but being a big hitter is a pure thing.

I think you'll see something 'nasty' outta the lineman from PITT (all bias aside, im serious- he's kinda dirty and obvious when he runs down field and looks for something/someone to hit) M.McGlyn.
