He has not as of yet, signed his tender.

Thats expected to come by mid-next week, per Bob Grotz. Further, he intimated that they (Birds and LJs camp) may be able to work out something beyond the franchise tender.
This would be a mild surprise to me for a couple reasons.

LJs injury history- they're goin to wanna see him play the season and do so, well.

The fact that both parties have been well known to be FAR apart in their opinions of what a fair contract for LJ would constitute.

Forgotten in the four weeks and forty-eight hours since the Philadelphia Eagles signed cornerback Asante Samuel on the opening day of free agency is the fact that the Eagles are looking to trade cornerback Lito Sheppard.

The deal hasn’t gone down, and the reason for it isn’t clear. Though there likely has been haggling about the value of Sheppard, with the Eagles presumably wanting more than what any interested teams would want to sacrifice, the recent trade of cornerback DeAngelo Hall from the Falcons to the Raiders should help to frame the market.

Hall generated a second-round pick in 2008 and a fifth-round pick in 2009. Sheppard generally is comparable to Hall, with Hall maybe being a half-notch above him.

One way or another, the deal is likely to get done. As noted in the Charlotte Observer, by way of the Philadelphia Inquirer, talks could heat up during the league meetings in Palm Beach.

But there’s no rush, in our view. The Eagles can wait until draft day. If the corner that a team covets is gone before it picks at the bottom of round one, then maybe that team would send that pick to the Eagles for Sheppard. Or maybe after the dust settles on the first day of the draft a team will ship a first-rounder in 2009 to Philly for Sheppard.

Either way, a deal is likely to happen. If the Eagles were committed to Sheppard as the franchise’s shut-down corner, they wouldn’t have given so much money to Samuel, who actually is a few months older than Sheppard.

-----------------------------

I disagree vehemently that Hall's worth more than Lito. Not bein a homer here, either.

Once again, Taco Bill's boy is a fullofhimself dolt.

No reason other than ego and press clippings, but therein is a difference between a guy that trash's his opponents and comes up short (Hall) and a guy that is maybe inconsistant.

Hall reads his press clippings and thinks he needs a better agent. Sheppard reads his press clippings and thinks he needs a better trainer.

Both give you the same level of "almost." Sheppard, at least, doesn't force the rest of the team to find reasons why he came up short the last time.

I actually think youre sellin Lito short too.

I think he's a top 5 CB in the league (its the HEALTH thats the issue here, not his ability).

I think he's a couple notches (talent-wise) better than Hall.

I'm with Seth. I'm struggling to think of a significant number of CBs I'd take over Lito. The fact that he plays 12 games per year is a big knock against him, however his talent is on par with other tier-1 cornerbacks.

I checked NFL.com and he's played 77 games in 6 years.

I dont disagree, but If the Eagles think they will get a first round pick for lito (in '08) they are fooling themselves.

You're right. However, if someone offers them a 1st rounder it's the kind of thing that the Eagles should be prepared to move on immediately. Maybe they're just putting Lito out there and waiting for someone to "overpay" for him.

Had they not paid for AS, their asking price for Lito might be higher (this isn't to suggest they shouldn't have signed him).

As it stands, teams know they want to get rid of him, so they'll hang on his injury issues in an effort to drive the price down.

I would really be surprised if they held onto him, and it would make an interesting scene come mini-camp. Especially if Westbrook is re-upped (which I think is the more compelling issue).

They should just keep all three corners and McNabb should volunteer to take a pay cut. He's such a "leader" and "team guy", step up and improve your team tough guy!

I'm starting a petition

I think they will probably get a 3rd rounder this year or a 2nd rounder in 2009 for Lito. Taht's just my guess. This week or draft days are the two most likely times he'll be dealt because that's when the waters are chummed and the feeding is in high gear.

I think the consensus around the league is probably on par with PFT's in this case.

Hall is 2.5 years younger than Lito, a shade taller/bigger, and hasn't had injury issues.

I think that if Lito didn't have the injury issues it would be a different story, but I'd expect Hall to be more valuable in trade.

I'm kind of surprised by all the sudden love for Lito. It seems fresh in my memory when many (myself included) were clamoring about Brown being the better corner. Lito got the INTs, but Brown got comparatively fewer challenges his way.

I know Lito made a Pro Bowl or two, but he's not Top 5 CBs in the league. Sorry.

(Hall ain't either.)

I think when Lito came back in 2006 and played out of his mind down the stretch, he silenced the "Sheldon is better than Lito" chatter.

I think he showed it again last year when he shut down T.O. and Moss toward the end of the year.

I think the thing with Lito is he's a top corner (maybe not top 5, but top 10) when healthy, but he's the kind of player who loses a LOT when he's nicked up. Watching him play at 85% is like watching a completely different player rather than a slightly diminished version of himself.

I also agree with Talon. If he didn't have the injury issues, we wouldn't be having this discussion because the Eagles never would have considered signing Samuel. At their best, I think they are very similar players.

Tight end Smith, Eagles' franchise player, signs tender
By John Clayton

Philadelphia Eagles starting tight end L.J. Smith eased the minds of everyone in the organization about possibly missing any time this offseason by signing his one-year franchise tender Wednesday.

Often, players get upset about the franchise tag because it doesn't give them the chance of hitting the unrestricted free agent market. Smith, the first player named as a franchise player this offseason, apparently didn't have any problem. He signed the deal for $4.522 million.

Smith became the fourth franchise player to sign his tender, joining Stacy Andrews of the Cincinnati Bengals; Marcus Trufant of the Seattle Seahawks; and Jordan Gross of the Carolina Panthers. Defensive tackle Corey Williams of the Green Bay Packers was traded to the Cleveland Browns before signing a six-year, $38 million contract.

Smith, 27, started 63 games in his five seasons with the Eagles, and has 194 receptions. His best season was in 2005, when he caught 61 passes.

With Smith back and in good spirits, the Eagles' offense should improve in the middle of the field. Recently, the Eagles added tight end/H-back Kris Wilson, who has 40- to 50-reception potential, from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shouldn't be too hard to believe the guy will catch more balls in one season than he has caught over his four year career.

I think you're missing the bigger picture, uber.

What will it mean if the backup tight end is catching 50 passes? Is this what the Eagles envision with their offense next season?

I'm not sure John Clayton saying a guy has 50 catch potential is the same as the having insight into the Eagles' offensive plans

I'm sure the Giants and Cowboys are staying up at night, thinking, "How will we contain the backup tight end on the Eagles? The backup tight end has always been a source of chain movement with the NFL."

I don't mean to sound like I'm mocking, but it really is a pretty strange statement to be bragging about the anticipated production of a widely underutilized position.
