I still don't understand all the cap hit nonsense (and this isn't an endorsement for Ocho).

From what I've read, trading them would result in dead money of between $3 million and $5 million this year. That's not all that bad.

Additionally, he could work out a deal with the Bengals if he really wants out. He'll do a bonus repayment upon execution of trade, once he's reached a new deal with his new team.

Laverneous Coles did it with the Skins, for instance.

bass and I guess KB have touched on it. Cincy faces a monstrous cap hit if they trade him.

Johnson will suit up for the Bengals this year by week 6 (or whatever wee he has to do so in order to have the year qualify). He will demand to be traded again next off-season and the Bengals may be in a position to do it.

Any goodwill he earned has been pissed away with these theatrics. The Bengals can claim they don't owe him the courtesy of trading or releasing him because of his behavior.

Maybe if the league looks at trading "cap hit" with the player, situations like this can be resolved.

As it stands, I don't see him going anywhere.

Yeah, they've touched on it and the media has been parroting itself about it, but it's not a real barrier.

They have $15 million in cap space, they have a franchise player taking up over $7 million (reaching a deal with him would create lots of room), the actual dead money would only be between $3 and $5 million, and there are ways to get around it completely (like Johnson repaying part of his bonus).

It's a speed bump as opposed to the great wall of China.

Johnson's contract

Now, I'm not so sure. The terms of that contract don't see all that crippling if he's cut or traded.

A bit mroe troubling might be that he only played one year of his contract and now wants out, but I think he's represented by Rosenhous - so that's to be expected.

The Bengals have a pretty solid set of young CBs with upside. They just don't need him.

Plus they'd be trading one guy displeased with his contract for another.

if they are going to hand out another $10- $15 million in bonus money, why not just give it to Ocho.

Yeah, they've touched on it and the media has been parroting itself about it, but it's not a real barrier.

From what I've seen, they keep talking about this $8 mil barrier. I don't think the Bengals have $15 mil in cap space, but if they trade him, they're at least culpable for the $5 mil signing bonus from this contract, plus whatever other bonus was prorated from his previous contract.

Even if Johnson gives up part of the signing bonus, it's not really up to him, because that money is already counted against the cap. Him repaying doesn't mean the Bengals still use it, which is why it's dead money.

Coles' issue with the Skins also comes from the Skins having the cap space (and them playing around with the cap so "craftily") to do something like that, but I don't believe Coles' SB came off the books.

And even beyond all that, three important factors come to mind when dealing with Ochenta Y Cinco:

- He physically assaulted his coach (or one of the assistants, and where there's smoke...(sorry Seth)).
- The Birds don't like this type of behavior, and already are looking at him not towing the company line.
- As soon as Johnson realizes that his contract won't give him what he wants (and when he realizes all the stuff that the Birds put in to protect themselves), he's going to go nuts again, and it's going to be even more insane than TO.

His talent's good (begrudgingly), but this team won't go for him, and the Bengals are bent on making him an example. Especially since he re-upped with them and it's like Corey Dillon all over again.

I still haven't see the definitive numbers, but the Bengals cap page I saw had $15 million (http://cap.go-bengals.com/) and shows the cap hit as anything from $8 million to about $3 million, depending on how you read the tea leaves.

Even if Johnson gives up part of the signing bonus, it's not really up to him, because that money is already counted against the cap. Him repaying doesn't mean the Bengals still use it, which is why it's dead money. This is the tricky part...he can pay back any guaranteed money not yet applied to the cap. So if he currently has $8 million in bonus money still unpaid, he can pay the Bengals back up to $8 million and when they part ways, they wouldn't suffer any cap consequences for the future prorated bonus money. Coles did it and the cap hit DID come off the books, which allowed them to trade him for Santana Moss.

They worked out a similar deal with Lavar Arrington. He wanted out very badly, they said they couldn't do it because of the cap hit, and he paid back the cap hit to buy his freedom. The player was set free and the team minimized their cap consequences. It's a creative move, it's not common, and I'm not saying Ocho would do it...but it's another option.

And all this is true. I'm not saying it would be a goo idea to trade for him. I get caught up in daydreaming about the possibility of picking up a player like that, but his history is bad. His present is bad. His agent is bad.

All I'm saying is the "cap hit" is a minor obstacle to getting a deal done.
Yo, click it

$7 million does change the point. it's more than half of the other figure. I had a post on here last night with a link that broke it down, and it got lost in the new board update.

The site you listed isn't up to date. Odom was signed since that link was updated, at least $3 million for draft picks, and I can't remember the other parts. I'll try and find it again

Greetings from Washington. Can't wait for Mass

KB, there are still 2 ways out even at $7 million

- Ocho buys himself out.

- Bengals sign Stacy Andrews to a long term deal

Or some combination. The point I'm making is there is no barrier to trading him. It would take a little work, but it's not impossible by any stretch. It's not even that out of the ordinary.

Signing another guy doesn't create cap room. Restructuring current guys creates cap room.

He's not going to buy himself out. He'll never get that money on the market, especially this late in the game. There are about 2 teams that could afford him, so he has no leverage.

KB, Andrew is currently on their franchise tag at almost $8 million dollars. Any long term deal would cut as much as $7 million off his cap figure THIS season.

Also, there are plenty of teams absolute flush with cap space to give him a deal.

KB, you're just wrong here. I'm not saying it absolutely will happen, but I think it will and the cap is being used as an excuse here. It's a real issue to be concerned with, but not a real problem.

You've been saying a deal can't be done because of the cap for about a month and I'm saying that's not the case.

Not sure about "right" and "wrong", but it's going to happen.

I just don't understand why people still think the cap is a real thing to teams. You can get out of any cap issue with a little patience or creativity. This one is EASY compared to many.

The Skins managed to trade Coles where he would have been a $10 million cap hit (more than 10% of the total cap at that time) and they had less than $1 million in free space.

This is a breeze.

Didn's Samuels restructure his deal to do that? Can the Bengals ask a guy to restructure his deal to get worse? That's my point

Again, it's not impossible, but it's not this annoying thing. It's something they'll have to work hard to sell their players on.
